KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL MUSIC LESSONS These guidelines will help you to have a successful and rewarding experience studying music. 1. Take lessons in a professional teaching environment. Learning music is not just a matter of having a qualified teacher, but also having an environment that is focused on music education. In a professional school environment a student cannot be distracted by television, ringing phones, pets or anything else. With only one half hour lesson time per week, a professional school environment can produce better results since the only focus at that time is learning music. Students in a school setting are also motivated by hearing peers who are at different levels and by being exposed to a variety of musical instruments. In a music school, the music instruction is not just a hobby or side-job for the teacher, but a responsibility which is taken very seriously. 2. Insist on private lessons when learning an instrument. Group classes work well for preschool music and theory classes. The advantage of private lessons is the one on one communication between student and teacher. The lessons and lesson material that are used can be individualized to meet the needs of each particular student. Also, students that take private instruction can more easily progress at their own rate. 3. Use recognized teaching materials. Materials developed by professional music educators are available for students in a variety of situations. For example, there are lesson books for very young beginners, and materials for adults that have never played before. The proper lesson books can start you at a level you are comfortable with. These materials have been researched and continually upgraded to make learning easier. These materials ensure no important part of learning the instrument has been left out. 4. Have Fun! Sometimes we all have a week with little practicing for reasons beyond our control. In that case there is always next week. Music should be something that you enjoy for a lifetime. Try not to set up unrealistic expectations for yourself or for your children to learn to quickly. Everyone learns at a different pace and the key is to enjoy the journey!
