John did a great job for our wedding, I started tearing up a little bit about halfway through and we didn't do a rehearsal so we were a little lost but he helped us sort through what we were supposed to do and got us through. Thank you John!

Carrie was amazing!!! She worked with me before our wedding through emails and pinterest to plan the special shots we would like to take. The night of, she had them all planned out, making sure we got shots that we had envisioned. She made sure we got every family shot we wanted and did them beautifully but also quickly so the little ones didn't get too restless. She was perfect at reminding us it was time for a few photo ops but it never felt like we were separated from our guests. She got a ton of detail shots before guests arrived and a ton of candid shots throughout the night. I can't wait to see all the images but based on the handful she showed us on the night of, I know without a doubt that she took amazing shots all night long and perfectly captured our wedding!!! We are so thrilled that we hired Carrie!!

Erika saved our wedding the day OF the wedding. Our original officiant fell through the morning of the weddings so we messaged Erika. She responded promptly and was half of what the other officiant was charging. We actually liked her better anyway - best thing that happened was the other officiant falling through

Emil, You and Aga did an incredible job with our wedding. We love showing our friends and family the many photos. Btw, thanks for touching up every single one! The video of the church ceremony looks like a scene from The Godfather. Truly unbelievable. You and Aga worked hard and it shows. The whole family gets watery eyes every time we... play it. Thank you again for being so kind, for your hard work and creativity, and for the rapid turn-around. I hope others use my post to help make their decision. Great job!

Carl was so great to work with from the start! He was always willing to meet with us in person to over details, and has such wonderful experience. Everything went off without a hitch! Everyone was dancing their butts off all night long at our wedding, and he melts things moving through the reception and ceremony wonderfully. I would recommend Carl to anyone!

My husband and I hired Kimia to photograph our wedding party. Kim did a wonderful job. She arrived early (and scoped the place beforehand) and was very attentive the whole time (7 hours!?!) it was a lively party and she gave us the photos we wanted - candid shots of all of our guests having the time of their lives.

Henry was amazing! We hired him for our wedding in October and he seriously killed it at our wedding. My husband and I gave him little to no direction and we were not let down in the slightest. To this day our friends constantly comment on how amazing our music and entertainment was. Hire him now-- you seriously will not be let down!!!

Where do I begin - well, let's just say that all my groomsmen and all of the bridesmaids that have yet to get married swore that they will be using Velvet Oaks for their weddings. The only problem will be booking them in time because of how great they are. Joe and the rest of his team are true professionals with amazing vision. Being the groom, I had enough to think about and didn't even think to worry about the videographers - luckily, I had the best ones around. From the start of our special day until the very end, we had a camera man following use to capture every moment we wanted captured. When we saw the trailer of our wedding video (I recommend you pay for it - well worth it), my wife and I were floored. We couldn't wait for the full video - when we saw the full video, we forgot how much took place and some stuff we didn't even get to see. Luckily it was beautifully captured. If you really need to, look around first and then chat with Velvet Oaks - but you'll be wasting your time talking to others as you will end up booking these guys. A+

Patricia and her team did hair and makeup for all of my bridesmaids and flower girl and my hair. I typically wear a lot of makeup so I was too nervous to have someone else do my make-up, but I was really happy with how my hair turned out! She even put my clip-in extensions in for me. My mom and a few bridesmaids didn't like their hair and ended up re-doing it themselves, but I guess that's how it goes - some people are just more picky. Also, one of my bridesmaids had a little reaction to the false eyelash glue that was used but she just has sensitive eyes and skin so we took them off and used a different glue. I would just make sure to tell your makeup artist if you have any sensitivities. Overall, I thought it was a great experience. All of my bridesmaids felt so pampered having their hair and makeup done and I think it reduced everyone's stress levels the day of the wedding. We were able to just sit back and relax in the hotel room while Patricia and her team worked their magic on us. They were there all morning from 9am until around 1 working hard and I really appreciated it. Also, Patricia is just one of those people that's nice to be around. It felt like she and her assistants were part of the family hanging out with us! Thanks again, Patricia!

I was one of Lisa's first clients and I cannot say enough about how wonderful she was during my wedding! I had one previous makeup trial that I did before my engagement session with a woman that was slightly cheaper than Lisa. I got what I paid for unfortunately. I ended up calling Lisa with tears welling up in my eyes and she instructed me over the phone (as she was driving I might add) how to fix my makeup. Of course after that I booked a trial with her immediately. Luckily my engagement photos turned out good. During my trial, Lisa had wine for me and I was very nervous and stressed about my prior makeup issues. She constantly asked what I liked or didn't like about colors, techniques, looks, etc. She did a great job of listening to what I wanted then using her professional skills to make the look work for my complexion, face, and occasion. At one point I asked for a specific lip color and she told me she would try it on one side and then a color she recommended that was similar but slightly softer....she was right and I went with that lip color. On the day of my wedding, there was some miscommunication on my part (as I was juggling a MILLION things) and I told her the wrong hotel....that was 40 minutes away.....so bad, i know. However, Lisa was literally at my hotel room door in 20 minutes, cool as a cucumber after driving like 140mph. She did a fantastic job! I had a bridesmaid that literally NEVER wears makeup and a bridesmaid that is a makeup whore and tries every trend possible. Lisa was able to accommodate them all and they all loved their makeup, even the girl that never wore make up was ecstatic about her look (she ended up showing her wedding makeup girl the same look for her wedding...her wedding was 4 hours away otherwise she would have booked Lisa). Lisa did a great job of managing time and also accommodated doing my mother's makeup. Lisa made sure I knew how to touch up my makeup throughout the day, however all I needed was some lip touch up before going down the aisle. I should also add I got married at the end of August in Chicago (super humid) but my airbrush stayed beautifully! Since then I have used Lisa multiple times for weddings that I was a guest at and other special occasions and I have loved my make up each time. I am excited to try her spray tans and wished she had that prior to my wedding. Any bride is lucky to have her on their glam squad!

I am so glad we went with Life on Prints for our wedding photographer. We loved working Tony and Michelle - they were able to get all of the requested family photos, and still got many creative shots. We just got our online gallery and the photos turned out beautiful! Can't wait to see our album and order prints!

The Amazing Aga! I just had my trial done, she worked with my hair so well. She also threw in some clip ins for me which aren't always the easiest to work with. I am so incredibly impressed with her work. Can't wait for my wedding day in late September, I know she will make me feel beautiful!

We got married this past November and hired Vidart last minute...I think a few days maybe a week at most before our wedding. We are so happy we did! I am so happy we have a video to look back on. He was able to catch everything, even the decorations which I appreciated. The 1 minute clip he made was beautiful as well. He even used our first dance song as the background which was very touching. You honestly cannot beat the price also- super reasonable. He was there on time and even stayed later for us. My only regret is not having him there the entire night.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
