Got a quote from Ofer of Clean Air Doctors and decided to hire them. First of all, these guys are extremely polite, respectful, professional, thorough, and deliver as promised. They thoroughly explained everything they were going to do ahead of time and they delivered as promised. They provided me an amount it was going to cost and gave me a rough time estimate that the duct and vent cleaning would take about 3 hours total, but it took about 5.5 hours in all. It was not their fault that it took so long as I had some 55 vents and ducts to be cleaned. But they stayed and finished the job as promised and did not ask for a penny more. In addition, I asked that they look at my dryer vent and they obliged. What more could you ask of a service? Very happy indeed with this company, TWO THUMBS UP, FIVE STAR RATING, A+++!!!

Sam is great! He was able to clean my dryer vent timely and he was even early to the appointment. He showed me everything he was doing. He was incredibly conscientious and cleaned up the area so well. And his price was $50 less than the other contractors I contacted. I will definitely be using him again. I highly recommend calling Sam for your vent cleaning and dryer cleaning needs.

Mark was punctual, courteous, and very helpful. He went through all the rooms with me and explained the whole process. He stated it would take about 2 hours. However, I had never had duct cleaning performed at my home and he stayed for 4 hours until the job was complete and the price stayed the same. He showed me before and after pictures/video of the ducts. Dryer vent cleaning was also included in the price. Also, he was able to tell me about new products such as a permanent filter and UV light for the furnace. He noticed that the humidifier was not working and gave me an estimate. There is also a discounted rate for yearly maintenance. Mark has a lifelong customer.

Dion was BEYOND fantastic!!!He responded almost immediately after i posted the job, and he was at my house less than an hour after he and I spoke on the phone. Dion fixed the issue with my AC and was very patient and knowledgeable when explaining everything to me. While he was working on my AC, I mentioned that i was fairly certain my air ducts were full of dust from a recent home renovation & probably needed to be cleaned. Dion gave me a reasonable quote to clean them, and I was going to talk it over with my husband that week and would be in touch to schedule it for a later date. However Dion took extra time after completing the AC job to examine my vents. After inspecting them, he told me that they really were not that bad, and he didn’t think they needed to be cleaned at this point. What an HONEST GUY! He could have easily taken advantage of the situation and made a quick buck off of me, but he didn’t!!! He was completely HONEST & clearly wanted what was in the best interest for me and my home. We will definitely be using Dion again!

Sam is definitely the best at what he does! And his pricing was very fair to me (good Value!) Sam fixed and did maintenence on our 19 year old central air conditioner. After he acid cleaned outside fins and the evap coil, added refrdgerant and tightened the valve cap, even though it was was 93° outside, the basement temp was a frosty 68°. On a 19 year old unit thats amazing. We had fairly competent people in past but only Sam was smart, knowledgable and cared enough to know how to really do the job well. Also, he planned next move to fully check for leaks other than a loose valve cap but no need; Sams brights, knowledge and experience did the trick. Even though Sam is so good that he is booked solid for weeks, he is truly dedicated to taking care of his customers. We had a leak continue but even though he had work lined up elsewhere, he made time somehow (energetic fast worker) to come quite a distance the very next day and get our a/c going. A few weeks later, we remain cool and happy. We are an elderly couple and without Sam's gracious dedication our home would not have been safe for us because of heat. Now no problem :) But wait, there is more: Yes, we hired Master Finish for a dyer vent cleaning. Our vent run is a long one, but Sam has the right tools and totally cleaned the vent long very flexable hose-like device that allowed Sam to clear the elbow bend of our venting system without having to take apart the duct work. We had been spending about $45 a month at the laudramat but now it's just the cost of detergent and electric. But, wait, there is more!! Sammy has skills with clothes dryers. (I'd guess with other appliances too but no time to "go there" Fact: most Fires from use of dryer come from dust on the dryer heating element. Sam was able to quickly put the dryer on it's side, open the back and blow the dust which was on top of the dryer heating element. Maytag cost would have been 60% higher! Yes even more :) Sam does not make up work for himself. He checked the washer water hose and let us know it was still fine. We call him our house doctor. Thank you very much,

A+ service. I had 15 vents cleansd. HVAC Coil. Sanitizer done for all of the ventilation system. plus Dryer Vent. All for a flat price $249.00 They did offer 100% Money Back Guarantee. So I knew they had to stand by their work. 4 yrs ago we hired a low cost company and they came in and hit us with all these extra charges saying their cost only included 10 vents cleaning and just 1 return. Then they sharhed us $149 fir coil cleaning and I was pissed. 9.99 for sanitizing / per passage. It added up to several hundred dollars and their advertising was $49. Unreal. BEWARE of "Blow and Go" companies outthere. Lowe's on the other hand was extremely professional. No up-charge, no up-sale. Very transparent from start to finish. Their technician Mike was very throurough, friendly and experienced. I highly recommend Lowe's Air Duct Cleaning Services to everyone!!!

My family was having bad allergies throughout the year and didn't know why. I reading a few blogs and forums, I realized one of the most common issues to indoor allergies is from dust build up in the ducts! I looked around the house checking our vents and sure enough every single one was dirty. I called OM Air Duct Cleaning and they came to my house within that week. The owner was friendly, and explained everything that he was doing. He gave me a free quote and offered great prices. So I agreed to a full 2-floor duct cleaning with installation of allergy prevent air duct filters. The men wasted no time and grabbed a few tools from the truck, revved up the vacuums and started cleaning out the ducts. They went through the house and carefully and thoroughly all throughout the house and finished in a couple of hours. The vents looked so new after they cleaned it and it wasn't full of dust anymore. After a few days, my whole family realized how much a difference they felt after having the ducts clean. No more indoor allergies and our furnace even thanked us for it. All-in-all I had a great experience with OM Air Duct Cleaning and I'll be using them again!

I had birds nssting in my kitchen exhaust vent system. I called a pest removal service, warning them not to attempt removal if they thought they were leaving any live birds behind. They said they wouldn't. Then they did. After detecting a smell and maggots a week or so later I called them back to deal with it but they said they wouldn't attempt it, concerned about not being able to handle dismantling the fan system. I found Air Care through Thumbtack and they said it would be no problem to handle the bird remains, maggots and fan disassembly. As it turns out, they didn't even have to disassemble, they went in through the access panel above the fan housing and cleaned out everything. These guys are top notch, worth every penny (a very reasonable price at that, considering I paid nearly as much to the other guys to cause the problem). Kudos to the owner (I think), Bruce, for responding with a quote so fast, and his technician for doing a great job.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

    • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
    • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
    • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
    • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
    • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
    • Ductwork properly protected.
    • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

    • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
      • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
      • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
      • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
    • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
    • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
