Lainie was a pleasure to work with. She did my airbrush makeup for wedding day as well as an updo. I did a trial with her a few months before the wedding and worked out the style I liked, and she was a good listener about incorporating what I wanted. Both hair and makeup stayed in tact through all of the main events of the very long day. I am very pleased with her work! A few of the wedding party people also got either hair or makeup and Lainie kept a good pace that morning and got us all out the door on time. I'd definitely recommend her services!

I needed makeup for my wedding at the last minute. I was originally going to go to a salesperson at a nearby mall, but after trying a few out I discovered the ones available were duds. I was also super concerned about the cost of a free lance professional makeup artist, which is why I avoided it at first. Jessica was not only extremely affordable, but she was professional, fast, flexible, personable, and very in tune to what I wanted. I told her I wanted dark and dramatic, she told me I shouldn't with my dress. I went home to my dress after the trial, and saw immediately she was right! Let her suggest what you need! She also takes part in face/body paint, drag makeup, celebrity magazine shoots, hair design, clothing design...she is limitless! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for event makeup.

Wendy was absolutely amazing! I am very picky with my makeup, and was worried I would never be 100% happy with the way I looked on my wedding day. Wendy did amazing work and took the time to get my makeup perfect! I was more than happy with how I looked for my wedding. Thank you so much Wendy!!

The Makeup Doc, Anjuli, was truly gifted at applying my makeup. She did an exquisite job at beautifying my prominent features and delivering what I asked for as far as makeup styles go. She created a soft, dewy look along with a beautiful smoky eyed feature that just really pleased me. My own photographer remarked on the beauty of my makeup. Anjuli is outstanding and is a gifted artist. Don't hesitate to hire her. You will look like the loveliest version of yourself when she does your makeup.!

Working with Angela is the most fun, energetic, and professional experience! I had the opportunity to work with her on a photo shoot where she did the makeup and not only did her makeup come out amazing but her energy was so exciting to be around on set. She goes above and beyond the call and I am very excited to continue working with her!

I hired Crystal to do make-up and hair for myself and a relative for my wedding. She was very accommodating with scheduling (we did book her at least 90 days ahead of the event, I believe - do it early!). Both the trial and day of make-up/hair went very smoothly and were stressfree (as much as it can be for a wedding!). Crystal really listened to our requests and made changes whenever requested. She was very professional and just jump right back in when we met for the day-of makeup and hair (she remembered my requests from the trial and had taken pics).I did airspray makeup, and it was definitely the right choice (even though I were very little makeup on a daily basis), for 90/100F heat and 50%+ humidity. I sweated through it and it didn't budge. A lot of people complemented me for my hair, and it did look truly amazing! Thanks, Crystal!

I enjoyed my overall hair and makeup look a lot.But it was a very disorganized salon, Destiny had to stop in the middle of my appointment and cut someone else hair. I'm not sure if she assumed my appointment would take less time than it did, but there were two other girls who waiting for their appointments with Desitny while she was still doing my makeup. Overall I was happy with my hair and makeup look, just the scheduling issue made me feel uncomfortable.

I have worked with Elana for years. Her doing take up for me for special occasions like weddings, homecoming and prom. She even did my make up for photo shoots, and even when I changed the location on her at the last minute, she was able to drive out to me and was totally chill about it. The makeup was always great. The first time she did it I even kept the eye makeup on through the next day "(though she explicitly tells you not to, sorry Elana it was just too pretty!)”

I was hesitant about getting waxed but I decided to try it. I will never go back! Going to see TT she set my mind at ease and assured me that I was in good hands. It's amazing!! I love not having to shave everyday just to wear shorts or a dress. I never knew how much time shaving took until it was basically removed from the equation. TT has also done my makeup for multiple events and has always been professional and kind. She has a way of doing just what you want based on what you need. :) I would recommend her over and over!

Simone gave me a full glam look with lashes. I loved it! She asked me what I liked and made sure to give it to me. She was very kind and educated me about all of the steps she was taking. I have a lot of dark marks and hyperpigmentation and mature skin so I was worried about how the makeup would turn out. She covered everything flawlessly without airbrush. Such a wonderful and talented lady!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
