Lydia H. says, "I recently had the pleasure of hiring CHC Heating & Cooling LLC to install an insulated bathroom exhaust duct, and I am beyond impressed with the exceptional service and professionalism I received. From the very beginning, the technician exhibited remarkable responsiveness. What truly stood out was their attention to detail and respect for my home. Due to the installation being in the attic near my rabbit’s room, I was concerned about insulation debris falling into the living space. The technician took extraordinary care to cover the work area thoroughly, preventing any unwanted material from reaching my rabbit’s room. I can confidently say that this business went above and beyond my expectations, and I am more than satisfied with the service provided. Their expertise, attention to detail, and dedication to customer satisfaction truly deserve a 5-star rating."See more

Ixiomara Robles says, "They showed up on time. Were very polite, professional and respectful of my home. They carefully moved their equipment around making sure to not damage anything and worked around my construction crew. My house was flooded and is currently under reconstruction. The air vents were so so dirty even though I had another company previously "clean" them out. Hot Cold Air guys barely spoke any English but made sure to use their phones to translate and explain their findings and work. I appreciated that so much! They were friendly and very attentive to their work they cleaned out the vents twice pulled out ROCKS the size of my hand!! Tunned my heating system and cleaned up after all their work. Thank you very much I will call again and refer friends! Good quality work is hard to find these days Hot Cold Air delivers just that QUALITY work!Thank you!"See more

Ian Watt says, "These guys are SO good: professional, skilled, and they work with their hands, minds and hearts. We live in a 1,000 sq foot condo. Our gas-fired HVAC was inefficient, SO noisy, and made the air so dry ... we found Phoenix and agreed that what we needed was a Bosch air source heat pump. Condenser on the roof, fan and coil in the condo. BUT our condo hvac closet is very small AND we wanted to free up usable space below the new unit. The Phoenix team did miracles. They mounted the unit high in the closet, giving us over 40" of new vertical space below it. It wasn't easy and it wasn't obvious but their team of three knew they could do it, and did it with great care.Great news for condo owners: this can be accomplished with NO extra roof penetrations, simply using the piping that is already in place in any unit which already has some form of AC. The roof unit is the same size as a standard condenser, and the in-condo unit is small.By far the best of all: when the Bosch operates I have to listen carefully to notice it. Cold air (this is summer) flows out of the vents, and the tick of our grandfather clock seems louder. I measured our old unit at well over 60dB, this one barely clocks in at 40dB.In winter, it should pull heat from the air outside and bring it down to us -- just as quietly. Plus, the air isn't dried out; no need for a humidifier.Phoenix charged us exactly what they had quoted, and completed the work exactly when they said they would. In summary: we couldn't be happier with our air source heat pump, and cannot recommend Phoenix highly enough as the people to install one for you."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

To find out how much your new heating system will cost, contact heating and air companies near you and ask for free cost estimates.

What do you do if your heat isn't working?

Start by checking your thermostat and making sure it’s on heat mode. If the display is out, change the batteries. You should also check your circuit breaker to see if the circuit has tripped. And check to see if there are any issues with your filters or furnace.

When in doubt, contact a heating and air specialist near you to diagnose and fix the problem.

How do I know if my heater is broken?

The first way to tell whether your heater is broken is to feel the vents — if cool air is coming out, there’s a problem. However, it could be a tripped circuit, loss of power or a different problem. For example, if you hear loud or unusual noises, this could also be a sign of breakage, as most modern heaters are fairly quiet. Finally, look at your power bills. If there’s an unusual spike in prices, your heater could be working improperly and running inefficiently.

Reach out to a heating and air specialist near you to repair your heating system.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

When should you replace a heating system?

The better care you take of your heating system, the longer it will last. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors estimates the following lifespans for heating systems:

  • Heat exchanger: 10-15 years
  • Heat pump: 10-15 years
  • Furnace: 15-25 years
  • Electric radiant heater: 40 years

If your heating system is broken, hire a contractor or a repair service to take a look at it. They can help you determine if it makes financial sense to replace your system or spend money on repairs. The good news is that replacing your old furnace will give you the opportunity to take advantage of newer, more efficient furnaces that can save you money on heating bills from the first cycle.

How does a hot water baseboard heating system work?

In a hot water baseboard heating system, a boiler heats water and then the water passes through the system’s pipes and into the baseboard radiators in your home. Baseboard heating systems are generally quiet, and you’ll experience less heat loss when compared to a forced-air system. However, you can’t use radiant basement heating for cooling purposes.

How does a central heating system work in a house?

A central heating system consists of a boiler, heat pump or furnace. The furnace contains several parts, including burners that deliver and burn fuel, a blower, heat exchangers, a blower and a flue. The furnace will push air through the heat exchanger. Then, it will pump the warmed air through your air ducts to distribute heat throughout your home.

In the summertime, a central heating system can also provide air conditioning to cool and dehumidify your home.

What is a dual fuel heating system?

Dual fuel systems combine two types of heat fuels — typically gas and electric, the latter in the form of a heat pump — to boost heating performance and efficiency. These systems work with your furnace to deliver both hot and cold air.  A major advantage lies in the power of a heat pump, which provides cool air in the summer and heat in the winter.
