Master Bathroom remodel done with expertise: demolition, tub, shower, tile, vanity, lights, sink, tile, grout, paint, hardware, faucets, valves. I had a contractor bail on the project, after doing the demolition and building the room (incorrectly). Ron came to the rescue with a professional demeanor, prompt arrival to quote, and explained the work involved. Not only was Ron able to work within the conditions, he reconfigured the other contractor's work to not require a complete demolition again. Ron has a knowledge of building codes and built the bathroom properly, including: reframe shower cubicle, laid concrete backer boards, repaired tub surround, installed tile straight, even, consistent, connected plumbing, electric, fixtures (very heavy stuff, but he handled it well with his colleague). I trusted Ron in my home, with the deposit and he was enjoyable to converse with and let me know in great detail about the project (before performing work). I'm pleased with the results and everything is still working great after 3 months, no leaks and nothing has broken.

He stained our three level deck in the back of our condo building and did a great job. The deck looks brand new and was way overdue to be restrained and sealed.

We hired McDonald Construction to tear out some old concrete and pour a new concrete walkway for our building. Mike was excellent to work with and was able to accommodate a tight timeline that we had to complete the work. Mike and his guys knocked out the project quickly and did an excellent job. The improvement made a big difference for our building. I would highly recommend Mike and his team and will definitely be contacting them down the road for other projects.

Josh answered quickly and came the very same day to look at the repairs to be done. The next day everything was done and well done! I've been very pleased to work with Josh: fast, good worker and good price! And despite the very cold weather he stayed a bit longer to also fix and adjust our garage door. A crack! I'm not attaching picture because the painting is still pending (too cold to paint outside). Won't hesitate to call him again in the future when needed

This is the second project Perdomo construction has done for me. The first time they built a small bedroom in the basement. This time they remodeled my kitchen. As is the first time, they have done a great job. Clean, fast and professional. The workers are punctual, helpful and above all very good people with great skills. I would recommend the company to anyone

We couldn't be happier with Anthony's work and he was a pleasure to work with. Our garage floor was a complete mess and our electrical in the house caused him some issues, but he was extremely patient, positive and never fell short of his anticipated timeline for completion. The weather was not on his side either but he was prepared and just kept working hard. His staff were kind and hardworking as well. Our garage is completely transformed and beautiful and we will absolutely use Celestial for projects down the road.

Geoff and his team from Benchmark did an outstanding job start to finish. Geoff, who has a degree in Architecture, began the planning of the rebuilt structure with me that included new features to preserve and strengthen it. Among the new features were the addition of concrete wings under the walkway and a drainage system to siphon water away. He did everything from the drafting of the plans for the village, demolition, construction of both cement and brick work to the final touch, brick columns to accent the building with decorative flower urns. You would not believe how wonderful the front of the building looks today. Our Maintance Person who is a licensed carpenter himself could not believe the high quality of the work that was done through out the entire process. Geoff even saved me money by preserving and reinstalling an iron railing. I can't tell you enough about this company and I have been in the landlording business and dealt with many contractors over 45 years.

Kevin did a great job adding some wood paneling in our condo building. He even added some extra sealent based on our conversation to aid in preventing cold air from seeping in to the building. We'll definitely have him back next time we need more work done!

I hired Mann Construction to build a deck, put up gutters and replace interior and exterior doors. The quality of work was excellent and the price was more than fair for the work. It was super hot out most days they were here and I offered water and told them to feel free to come in to cool off any time they needed but they said they had a job to do and they were fine. Several months after all was completed I had trouble with one of the doors, I called them and they were here quickly and brought what they needed to repair it at no additional cost to me. My family will now have years of enjoyment being able to relax at the end of the day on our deck.

I just used Greenleaf developers to build an addition at the back of my house. I met with a lot of companies but ultimately chose Greenleaf developers because they were the most organized and affordably priced. They had everything picked out in no time and stayed within my budget. The crew got started on the date we agreed upon. I could not be happier with the finished product from the design to the craftsmanship! Thank you, Peter!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
