Tom is the sickest guitar player ever. Honestly, he shreds harder than anyone I've ever seen pick up the axe. Not only does he shred, he knows how to teach the ol' 6 string in amazing ways too. He is a great guy to hang out with, so taking guitar lessons is having fun. I could elaborate more, but it could be said so easily. Take lessons from Tom. He's the best.

Jerry Tiberi puts together jazz duos and trios for our various fundraising events. The groups are well chosen for the type of event and size of the venue. I get many unsolicited complements from our guests. Jerry's jazz groups have a tight and easy musical interplay that is smooth and interesting, appropriate and unobtrusive. They really put our guests at ease, and would class-up any kind of gathering, event, or special occasion. There is nothing like live music and we always call Jerry Tiberi first !

Brit was amazing! Hired her for a cello/violin duo for my wedding. She kept in contact throughout the process, was able to find all the songs I requested (some were pretty obscure), and she and Helen played beautifully. We received a ton of compliments on the music, and it was awesome to hear my favorites as a string duo.

I hired Alex and his string quartet for a series of audio and video recording sessions, and my group was especially thrilled with Alex for his impassioned playing and the eager, positive attitude he brought to each session. His quality work did not miss a beat even when our sessions went over time, and that left us waiting for our next chance to collaborate with him. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone looking for a highly skilled cellist with a lively approach to music making.

I hired the String of Sounds trio for my ceremony/cocktail hour and a DJ for the reception! Everything was phenomenal! I am a very type-A bride, and they exceeded my expectations in every way. They were very patient with me throughout the process and had great song selections. Adam the DJ was a pleasure to work with!

I’ve always been fascinated by the violin. The moment I could muster up enough courage to take classes, I was extremely dedicated, however, not knowing anything about instruments and being an absolute beginner in playing one, it was always a challenge to find a teacher who could match my excitement and interest. When I met Kal, I felt that he had a genuine desire, not just to teach me how to play the violin, but to help me understand music as a whole; to incorporate all musical notes into my life through our lessons. Taking up an instrument can be such an intimidating task, but it is not at all impossible! With Kal as my teacher, in just a few months, I found myself reading music, playing to rhythms, listening to notes and recognizing them (and playing solely by listening to notes!) - basically, I found myself learning music, wholly, something that no other teacher had ever managed to take me through. Thanks to Kal, I can pick up my violin, tune myself, and just…play. His love for music is palpable and quite easily transferable; his dedication is outstanding, and his help has been truly invaluable.

We couldn't have been happier with our decision to hire Paul and his trio for our wedding. My husband is a musician and I have worked with live music as a dancer many times, so we know quality when we encounter it. Planning our wedding from our of state was a challenge, and Paul was responsive and professional via email. He sent us music samples and was eager to learn specific songs for our ceremony. The day of our wedding the trio was early, well dressed, and ready to go without a hitch. They played for our outdoor ceremony and quickly reset on the patio for cocktail hour. I would recommend Paul to anyone looking for high quality, affordable musicians to enhance your event!

Chris Winters and his band agreed to perform at a party I had recently. Their perform was spectacular. Chris's repertoire is limitless. I have followed his music for about 10 years. I'm always amazed at the his virtuosity with blues, country, rock and pop. Never a dull moment with those strings when he's on stage. He shows up on time with his band and gives you all he's got.

    About

Arkansas Dogjaw is an indie-progressive rock power trio from Urbana, Illinois. With hauntingly sweet guitar, aggressive bass, mouth-watering drumming, and powerful vocals, they bring a fresh sound and tangible groove. What makes this band unique and exciting is the diverse musical backgrounds of the members and the way that the genres are combined to create a new, big sound. "One of my old bands "Certifiable" played a show with these guys some time back at "Heartbreakers" on the Landing. They blew my mind that night with their level of musicianship and technical ability! They are flying the "integrity" flag high in a world of stagnant music." -- Joe Rich, St. Louis, MO Arkansas Dogjaw can play up to 90 minutes continuously, composed mainly of originals. Covers can be requested, and past covers have included songs from Tool, Modest Mouse, and Nirvana.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
