Visual Ettiquette's lead photographer, Emil, is an AMAZING photographer and choosing to work with him was one of the best decisions about our wedding!!! My wife and I hired Emil to shoot our photos for our recent wedding in Downtown Chicago. First off, Emil is hands down a great guy who talked with us over the phone before the wedding discussing all the details of our wedding day and offered up some great suggestions for where to shoot around the city. On the day of the wedding he promptly arrived on time, even with all of the crazy Chicago traffic that morning. His warm heart, charming personality, and artistic eye made shooting with him super fun and relaxed. Shooting with him was actually one of the highlights of our day when we went around Chicago getting photographed in the snow around Grant Park and the Planetarium. I can still remember Emil running around (yes actually running) in order to find all the artistic angles to take our photos. He even stood on frozen Lake Michigan to get us the best shots of what ended up looking like photos the wedding photos of our dreams. Oh yeah and for all this, he is 1/4 the price we were quoted by other artistic photographers. Emil gets my wife and I's highest recommendation!!! If you want top notch artistic wedding photography that is still affordable, Emil is your guy! I never knew my wife could be such a supermodel until Emil photographed her!

I was truly blessed to find Kimia who photographed my wedding on 11/12/16. This young woman is a beautiful person inside and out. My kids felt comfortable around her and she was able to capture TONS of beautifully candid photos of our special day. I hope to use Kimia for all of our photography needs in the future. She is truly gifted!

I needed a professional headshot photo in a short timeframe. Since I never had professional photos done before and had no idea how to find a good professional in order to help me out, I was initially relatively intimidated by the process. Looking up the websites from several photographers, most were only advertising wedding and recreational photography services. Robert put me at ease from the very beginning, showing me some sample headshots he took and explaining me the whole process as well as what I could expect. During all of my interactions with Robert, he has been very professional. Also, it is obvious that he is passionate by what he is doing. He overall did exceed my original expectations, delivering some excellent headshots in a very short timeframe!

The Maestro Media did an amazing job capturing all the special moments of our wedding day. We could not be happier with their work. Videographer, Mark Condra, was there working right alongside the photographer, capturing every imaginable detail. He worked so well with us and with our other vendors, helping the day go exactly as planned. The final products are videos we cherish and will use in the years to come to relive our wedding day. They gave us a copy of the full ceremony, footage of the toasts & first dances, a surprise shoutout video from friends & family (which we loved watching on our honeymoon) and such a creative, catchy highlight video that truly depicts the vibe of the whole day. Maestro Media was so quick in getting the final products to us. We won't hesitate to highly recommend them to friends and family looking for a talented, professional videographer.

I had been working with Harry to prepare for filming our wedding this Friday. We set up a meeting three days before the wedding date at which he said we no longer need a contract and demanded the entire payment for the project up front. This was the first time I had heard of this and I was thrown off by how it came out of the blue. Nowhere in his e-mails, website, contract, or in any of our conversation did it come up that he requires payment up front. I told him I was willing to give half and he told me that "That's not how I do buisness." He said that people usually pay him when he shows up to do the job. I agreed and said I would pay him half and how and half the day of the job. He said "that's not how I do business." He said he was sure I could find someone else to work with and got up and walked out of the restaurant. I was stunned! He has not returned any of my calls, e-mails, or texts. He has the right to ask for whatever terms he wants, but he needs to make that clear up front or put it in the contract, not drop it into a conversation three day before the wedding and then walk out when I question him. It was especially weird in that it came right after telling me he doesn't need a contract. It felt very off to me. I was not comfortable paying him in full under the circumstances and I felt like I was being railroaded into a last-minute bait and switch. He was unwilling to talk about it, negotiate, or show any sign of professionalism or care. He walked out as soon as he didn't get his way. I am angry that I am three days out from my wedding and I have no videographer! I did not see this coming!

We had Dovtographie video our wedding, and we couldn't be happier! Dov was an absolute pleasure to work with leading up to the wedding, on the day of, and afterwards as well. His cheerful and kind demeanor and knowledge of his craft made him the perfect videographer for us. And the fact that he did some drone videography was a really neat added bonus that the guests all thought was really cool.It seems clear that customer satisfaction is his number one goal, and we are very satisfied customers!

Mark was an amazing photographer. We booked him for our engagement photos, and we had such a great time with him and are extremely impressed with the photos he has sent us. He had an amazingly fast turnaround time for some sample photos with just a 2 day wait from our shoot. For the rest of the photos it only took him a couple of weeks! His work with lighting was spectacular, and he really made my fiancé and I enjoy the whole experience. We would highly recommend him to anyone wanting any photos taken, whether engagement, wedding, or even just portraits.

As a wedding planner it so important to work with vendors who are talented, reliable, and responsive in the weeks leading up to the wedding. It doesnt hurt when they are also a blast to work with for 12+ hours. Ryan was all of these things & someone I will be recommending to future couples! His work is gorgeous, fun & unique! Highly recommend!

Really love this place and highly recommend Soo Studio !! I visited Chicago from MN because I had to add a photo on my resume. Pretty sure he is a great photographer not only for wedding, but also portrait photo. I had to wear shirt and jacket for my photo ID, but unfortunately I didn't have one. However, thankfully he lent me his shirts and jackets so I could take great photos. He is also very professional doing post-editing. Very professional, nice and friendly. I really thanks for great photos. want to give this place 10 stars !!

Will is the real deal! He was recommended to us through a friend for our wedding and we are so glad we went with him! He was thorough, took the time to get to know us, open to our ideas, brought his own creativity to the table, extremely responsive to us whenever we needed to get a hold of him or had questions, and was all around fantastic to work with. When you're planning a wedding, one of the things that you appreciate the most is an organized vendor who takes your stress away, and that's exactly what we got! We couldn't be happier with the finished product. Will caught so many amazing moments that we didn't even think about wanting to capture but we are so glad he did! I cry tears of joy every time we watch our wedding video! Look no further for your videographer, Will is your guy!!

I absolutely recommend him for all your occasions! I haven't received my photos yet, but I know they're going to be amazing! I run my own bridal business and I have already referred him to all my clients as he is on my preferred vendor list! Thank you for everything Ivan! Steve did an amazing job at our wedding May 2015! From the very start to the end of the process he was professional, punctual, and genuine. We honestly could not have asked for a better experience. It is hard to put something so special, like your wedding, in the hands of someone else to capture but I highly recommend Steve! We have a video that we can now cherish for a lifetime and recap on the most important day of our lives! Thank you again Steve for going above and beyond!!!! Chelsea and Jeremy

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.
