Ms. Sandy has been doing an awesome job at tutoring my 6 year-old son. Before he met her, my son was struggling with reading a book.(because we only speaks Korean at home) Now his reading skills are much improved and he is able to read! His grade get higher since Ms. Sandy starts to teach him. She is warm, patient and very sweet. We really want to have her to teach him more. We also recommended her to my Korean colleague, who has a 5 year-old daughter. - NamSuk Oh & KyongHwa Jung (in Chicago)

We bought a few too many tutoring sessions and they refunded us a couple of hours promptly, with no questions asked. The quality of the tutoring was top notch.

Wendie was an excellent tutor. Easy to schedule with and found a time and convenient location close to home. My son's score went up several points from the first time he took the ACT (before tutoring). His Reading score had a big increase send his math score went up dramatically too. My son mentioned that the tutoring also helped him in his math class at school. I would definitely hire Wendi again.

My name is Rich. I live in Glen Ellyn. Laura Sosnowski has been tutoring my sophomore child for about a year. My child was struggling for months in Geometry, Honors Geometry and Algebra 2. We found Laura on Craigslist and she started to come and tutor my child and dramatic things began to happen. My struggling child's math grade miraculously began to improve quickly and today my child has excellent grades in math. Laura comes to our house, shows up on time and my child really enjoys her time with Laura. They sit together and spend an hour going over the math, and it's really been an amazing transformation with my child's grades. She actually enjoys math now and has an entirely new outlook and elevated level of confidence. All of this has taken place thanks to Laura's time with my child. If your child is struggling with Math, I highly recommend you call Laura and get ready to see an amazing transformation. Sincerely Rich Glen Ellyn

I have been taking Spanish lessons with Cristobal for coming up on a year and French lessons for the past 6 months or so. While I am sure that there are plenty of choices for tutoring this may be the only teacher I have had that I can honestly say has far superior methodology versus all my other professors. I don't say this lightly either, I say this coming from years of experience with other teachers in various settings. Just to give a little background, I studied Spanish for 3 years in high school, then studied in Mexico at a vocational school in a completely immersed environment (living with a host family of non-English speakers) far from the reaches of most gringos in a small city called Cuernavaca. I have worked with native Spanish speakers that speak very little English for 10+ years, studied Spanish in college for 4 semesters, and even studied with Professor William Slavin for two years in weekly private sessions, a local scholar who spoke English, Spanish, French, ,Italian, Portuguese, and Hebrew. While Slavin's approach was very thorough, Cristobal's approach is practical, more natural, and aimed at speaking. Ole! Spanish School isn't just another business in the sea, it's a place with an authentic philosophy and a natural approach to language learning. To make the experience even better, his rates are super reasonable and he has a very easy going personality that creates a relaxed environment. His positive ratings exist for a reason.

She did a great job on tutoring my wife in academic English. We can only recommend her. She is not a nativ borne, however her language is more suffocated if she were. Maybe that's also why she is so good at teaching. She was the best tutor we have had. Thanks again

We hired Michael to tutor our son, a freshman, in honors math. Our son was very comfortable with Michael's teaching style and responded very well to the tutoring. Michael is very approachable and provided our son with very pragmatic advice and tools to assist him in overcoming his struggles and adjustment to high school math. I highly recommend Michael, particularly for high school level students.

Kevin is the most outstanding tutor I have ever met or even ever spoken with. He is a retired physician who had great teachers during his career and now works with students to try and have a positive influence on their lives. My son did both high school Math and Science tutoring with him AND also did ACT test preparation with him. My son's ACT scores went from 24 before working with Kevin to 33 after working with him for just 3 months! I cannot speak more highly of him. If you want your son or daughter to really excel - you better at least meet with this guy! Darren G. Northbrook, IL

Suzanne has been my daughter's tutor for the past ten years. She very quickly tapped into her strengths and interests to provide fun ways to improve her language arts skills. Suzanne's special education background, in addition to her patient and kind personality have made her an excellent teacher. My daughter has absolutely loved going to "tutoring" all these years!

My daughter has been working with Linda for help in her Advanced Algebra/Trig class. Linda has a very kind tone and a lot of patience. Linda asks for the topics in advance of our sessions so she can come prepared. She doesn't pretend to know everything and will admit if she doesn't know something rather than pretend she does. She also will follow up after our sessions with things if they couldn't figure out a particular problem during the session.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
