I really enjoy learning from Tracy! She is a very warm and approachable person. From my lesson, I could tell that she really knew what she what teaching me! That made me feel comfortable about learning more from her. She has so much knowledge to bestow on everyone about Music Theory, songs, etc. I believe that learning the piano or any instrument could pose as a job opportunity. I feel that Tracy prepares me to play locally and/or professionally!

Alex was a pleasure to work with. I found him to be communicative, mature, and highly expressive and technically outstanding as a musician. He played cello in a dance piece I created for a professional dancer from abroad. We both felt that was excellent in the process and performance. I recommend him to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Cassie taught my 2 kids piano for a couple of years and she was great! Very organized, supportive and punctual. She was patient when the kids were being difficult. We've now moved away to a different region of the country, but we had a couple of great years with Cassie! Highly recommended!

I was looking for a short term cello teacher for my 11 year old daughter while her regular teacher was on summer break. City Strings and Piano responded right away and sent a teacher to my home working with the days/hours I preferred. Victor, the cello teacher, was fantastic! He only had four lessons to work with my daughter on her seating audition pieces. She arrived at the audition feeling confident and well prepared! Victor was punctual and extremely helpful in describing the mood of the pieces..explaining dynamics and bowing techniques to improve her playing. He was very patient and friendly...using a bit of humor to engage my daughter and make her feel at ease. I would highly recommend Victor and City Strings & Piano! Loved the convenience of a professional, highly qualified teacher coming to my home!

Francisco is a great instructor and plays cello very beautifully. I have had lessons with other cello instructors and it's a lot more laid back and easy-going with Francisco.. which tends to keep you comfortable and actually engages you to progress forward faster. The pace is good and challenging, and his insight into both technique and repertoire history adds a lot to the whole lesson experience. I look forward to continuing my cello lessons with Francisco for the foreseeable future. :)

Jake challenged me to break through my comfort zone both musically and academically. I identify my years under Jake's guidance as those in which I experienced the greatest growth and success in my musical endeavors. His appreciation and enthusiasm for music and deep passion for the cello are very effective and are evident in the way he teaches. He has an incredible ability to weave musical principles into one's everyday life. I feel that Jake really cared for me--as a musician, yes, but more importantly, as a person. I am so thankful that I had the privilege to study the cello with Jake. He has my highest recommendation.

We love Bellas Artes! The teachers excel at combining technique and joyful discovery within an atmosphere of encouragement. My kids LOVE their lessons with Destiney and Constance and, more importantly, are learning to love to play music while being challenged and encouraged. Having such talented musicians who are so gifted in working with kids is such a blessing! Practically speaking, it is great because with 5 kids it is huge to have both piano and violin lessons in the same place, and they are always gracious in working with my schedule. We highly recommend Bellas Artes!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.

How much are cello lessons?

Cello lessons are a great way to anchor and guide your cello practice, regardless of your skill level. From top symphony performers to first-time music students in elementary school, cello lessons correct your flaws and help your strengths shine. The cost of cello lessons will vary, depending on the reputation and experience of your teacher, the length and frequency of your lessons, and where you live. Students who have regularly scheduled lessons and pay in advance often pay less per lesson than drop-in students who schedule lessons as needed. Here are some examples of average cello lesson costs:

  • 30-minute cello lesson: $30, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
