Moved into our house about a year ago and have had hired many to help with projects in our home. Walt is by far the best we have hired. I wish I found him sooner. He did crown molding, chair rails, bead board, wainscoting, trim/casing around all of our windows including a massive foyer window & trimmed out all the entryways. Such a pleasant person, beyond fair pricing, great to work ( gave us suggestions and options with trim) and just an all around great job! Super hard worker, extremely clean and all of this was completed in about 3 1/2 days! My husband and I couldn't be happier. Will definitely be calling him again and have given his name to a friend of mine already. Awesome Job! Thanks so much Walt, our house looks incredible!

Russ was very informative and honest about the best windows for our home. We are thrilled with the work he and the installers did on our house. We were in the market for new windows for a while and met with multiple salesman. Russ was the most knowledgeable person we had met and that is why we went with him and his company. The prices were extremely reasonable and competitive. I think the best thing was the job was completed on time. We have recommended him to my sister who is also going to get her windows done as well through him and would recommend him to anyone in the market for new windows. Thanks Russ for the great job!!!!

I have a garden window in my kitchen and the seal on the glass had broken, leaving a permanently clouded window. Dominick showed up on time for both the estimate and installation. He installed new tempered glass that was better quality than the old for a reasonable price. He cleaned up afterwards. Overall, a very good experience

I had my whole house of Windows done by Turn - Key Remodeling. The project went great, we are so happy with the product and service we got. We had a Rep come in and the quote was very fair for the quality of the Andersen window that we wanted. Installation was a few weeks later, and the crew was very professional and clean. We plan to do more upgrades to our home, in the future, and we will be calling tkr.

I had water damage to a basement bedroom. Even though the job was relatively small, Ray accepted it regardless. I was on an extremely tight time frame and Ray and his team pulled through, even working on a Sunday evening. Our floor and trim look beautiful and I'm so happy to have a beautiful bedroom for my mom again. They are coming back in a couple weeks to replace some basement windows. Ray and his team did a great job, professional, and friendly. Highly recommend! Thanks Ray for delivering as promised!!

Last year we sustained hail damage to our home. Our insurance agent recommended Joel to complete the work. HGR replaced our roof, siding, gutters, and patio door. Everyone who worked on our home was courteous and professional. The materials and craftsmanship were excellent. Joel did a wonderful job overseeing the work, answering all of our questions, and keeping us informed throughout the entire process. We are so thankful to Joel and HGR for making the repairs to our home go so smoothly. We have already recommended Joel to our family and friends.

I've been looking for a while for someone to do some window work at my building. I've gone through a lot with dishonest contractors so I was a little apprehensive. But Superior choice really was Superior!! Peter came out he was very personable but yet professional. He also gave me a fantastic deal on my windows which needed to be repaired and/ or replaced. This guy is going to be my window guy from now on. Thanks Superior choice!!

I put out a request for window replacements. I needed to meet new egress codes for windows. John called right away and met me the next day. He came up with a great solution, found the right type of windows and sent his installers after the order came in. The installers were also great. They came on time as promised, but what I loved most about them, they were very clean, efficient, and work was great. Really happy I hired them and would definitely recommend them for any window needs.

Jerry is very nice guy, and he came to me twice to discuss the window project. His price is very reasonable, and he ordered high quality windows. The window installation process was very smooth, and passed the village inspection without any problems. I would use Jerry or Remodel Rangers again.

We are very impressed and satisfied with the craftsmanship and quality of work from the gutter and siding crew. The owners Mike and Kathy were exceptional and professional and very easy to work with. Our project was a unique one as that the previous owner had sided the house with cement board and left all the windows and trim wood. When Mike came out the give us a quote and saw the arched front entry way he was the only contractor that said they could do it. And they did a fabulous job with it! We are so pleased with the completed house will be calling them back soon to come out and help us with our garage project. I highly recommend Classic Gutter Co. you will not be disappointed!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
