Just witnessed my first lesson with David. He was able to make my introverted wife feel comfortable enough to come out of her shell and make silly sounds with him. She appreciated that the first lesson didn't include a "sing me your favorite song" request to see what she could do. Instead, he started with the basics and spent the lesson teaching proper breathing and letting the pressurized air out of tight vocal chords (as against "pushing" the sound out). Looking forward to many more lessons. Now she's got to practice!

I've only recently begun taking piano lessons, but I can already tell that Jon Novi is the kind of teacher who sees limitless potential in his students. His enthusiasm buoys me even when I think I've messed up a song, and encourages me to try again. Also, his piano skills are on point, and he does a good job of explaining how to read a score and the mechanics of playing the piano. Beyond piano know-how, though, I would argue that it is Jon Novi's zest for teaching that makes me glad I am taking lessons with him. You won't regret it.

Elif Allenfort has been an amazing piano teacher. She allowed me to pick the direction I wanted to progress and supported me every step of the way. Under her tutelage my piano skills have increased tremendously and I have several beautiful sounding songs to show for my efforts. If I had to go back and pick my piano teacher again there is no doubt in my mind that I would choose Elif.

Matt is a great teacher. He quickly identified my current skills, knowledge and interests and incorporated those into the first few lessons. He sets goals and expectations that help me develop without causing additional stress.

I searched Craigslist for instructors in Orange County who teach "Moeller", a specialized method to maximize energy efficiency while drumming. David O and I spoke briefly on the phone about my expectations. I have taken just 5 lessons in total, and so far, my goals have been met or exceeded, including a huge breakthrough on my speed and technique (I'm a technical metal drummer). I can't express how to the point and precise David is. He has learned from some of the best drummers in the business and I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with him and improve my craft. Thank you David!!

Michele is very personable, patient and just flat out awesome to work with! I'd been meaning to take singing lessons for some time and finally got around to doing it. I've played music for years and studied Jazz/Classical guitar in college and could recognize right away that Michele is a true talent and knows what she's doing. By the end of the introductory class I knew I'd found the right teacher to help me develop my ear and my voice.

Paul has been the most amazing instructor. I have never played the electric guitar before and his level of patience has made it extremely easy for me to learn. He writes lesson plans and assigns "homework" appropriate for your level of experience which helps in learning or further developing your skill. I plan on continuing to take lessons with Paul for quite some time.

I have been taking lessons from Dan for more than two and a half years and it something I look forward to every week. Aside from being a great teacher, he is fun, understanding and very talented. He takes the time to help you understand the structure of what you are learning without over burdening you with theory. He is also really interested in making sure you are enjoying playing (that is the point) and getting out of it exactly what you want. Any time I have a request (no matter how absurd) of a song to learn, Dan takes the time to find a good arrangement at my level and teaches it to me. It is really nice having that flexibility and personal investment in my lessons. In just two and a half years, I went from playing no to guitar to be comfortable jamming with my friends while also developing my classical guitar playing skills. His musical interests are vast; from beautiful classical pieces to classic rock solos to movie soundtracks (he loves Storybook Love from the Princess Bride). This blend of genres and talents truly sets Dan a part and I would encourage anyone looking to finally learn the guitar to sign up for lessons with Dan.

I took guitar lessons with Shane for about 3 or so years and it was such a great experience. After trying many other places that gave lessons, the experience that I had with Shane really made it easy, fun, and enjoyable. I learned A TON while still getting to pick the style of music I like. I was able to explore different types of music and different artists that Shane introduced to me, some of which are among my favorites today. Choosing Shane at TriTone music was a great decision that made for a fantastic learning experience for me.

Greg is the best! He is an incredibly talented musician. He is B able to adapt any piece to your abilities. He wants you to play pieces you're interested in. His encouragement was kind, but firm-- which is exactly what I needed. He held me to a high standard that I was eager to meet. He has a great sense of humor, which made lessons fun and stress free. I highly recommend Greg!

I took lessons through Mclain's mind of music for one reason; to learn how to play "Green Hill Zone" on Piano. Thanks to Kevin, I can say that I accomplished that goal (granted, 2 years after he left but you get the idea.) Because Kevin was my teacher, I've moved on to learning a couple other songs as well (although I could always practice more than I do.) When Kevin was giving lessons in Chicagoland he was the most affordable piano lessons, regardless of if it was hourly or half-hour (short of having a piano whiz for a grandparent who would teach you for free, which I do not.) Improve, I guess a couple times he was 5 or 10 minutes late for the appointment, but that's only because he would DRIVE OUT to the kid's house and be stuck in traffic on the way back (which is totally understandable, considering what an excellent musician Kevin is.) If you take one lesson, you'll feel the same. Young or Old, Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced Kevin can teach you how to play.

Aaron Dorfman is not only a truly gifted guitarist, but an amazing music teacher. He gave my young daughter guitar lessons for several years, and is a patient and engaging teacher. It brings him genuine joy to see the children he works with succeed on their chosen instruments. Aaron also taught me how to play guitar, even though I didn't start lessons until I was in my 40's. He was able to strike the right balance between encouraging me and challenging me -- something every great teacher strives to do. I also ended up working with Aaron for a couple of years -- both performing together live and recording my original music with him. Aaron can do it all -- he sang harmonies, played guitar, worked on the musical arrangements, played keyboards and bass, did the sound mixing. Sharing the stage with a musician of his caliber was a privilege, and I will always be grateful to him for sharing his many musical gifts with me both on stage and in the studio. Hire Aaron to perform at your next event or as a music teacher. I recommend him without reservation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What can you do with a first aid certificate?

People with a first aid certificate are trained to respond quickly and appropriately in life-threatening situations. Although a first aid certificate alone isn’t enough to secure a job, it can make you more attractive to certain types of potential employers. When you have a first aid certificate, you’ve proved that you know how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and handle emergency situations like choking, heavy bleeding, a heart attack or stroke, or anaphylaxis. Most parents prefer babysitters and lifeguards with first aid certification. Many professionals, especially those who work with children, are required to have first aid training, including teachers, coaches, counselors and therapists, firefighters, and social workers. In addition to adult and pediatric first aid plus CPR and AED courses, you can take first aid training specifically designed for babysitting and child care, for health care settings, and for swimming and water safety situations..
