We hire Masha do come to our work a couple of times a week and teach Yoga. As a business owner I recognize that being behind a desk all day is difficult on the body. On the other side we have a warehouse where they are on their feet all day. Our Yoga class is a nice refresher. It helps to relax everyone and increases flexibility, focus and strength. I would absolutely recommend Holistic Cure to anyone wanting to get into Yoga or take their current skills to the next level!

Sarah really listen to what I needed, isolated the problem, and is working to resolve. She has the strength for a consistent quality deap tissue message. With the rounded knowledge of oriental medicine as well as others she is able to combine disciplines to better suit your needs. Even if you just need to de-stress. I HIGHLY recommend her.

I have to say that it was my first time trying acupuncture, so I was a bit skeptical about it. One morning I woke up with my neck stiff and my wife advised me to try something different than traditional medicine. I have visited Dr. Moshkovich twice. Right after the first visit I felt a lot better, and the pain was gone. I found the treatment very effective. The needling technique and bedside manner of Dr. Moshkovich is very gentle. She is patient and her approach to the problem is comprehensive and thoughtful. I highly recommend acupuncture at Nirvana Naturopathics.

I have been receiving treatments from Kim since early summer 2014. First on weekly basis, now bi-weekly. The results are outstanding! My first problem was silent acid reflex. Instead of doctor's recommended acid proton pump inhibitors (which may relief the symptoms but may cause more acid production), I turned to Kim and with acupuncture and herbs got rid of bloating and other related symptoms. One particular case stands out: I got to my appointment with Kim in terrible pain and bloating, hardly able to move... An hour later I jumped off the table completely deflated and pain free! Kim does her diagnostic at the beginning of each treatment and always suggests the treatment that is most needed that day. Also, she takes time to explain things and educate. Thanks Kim! I'm so glad I met you! Yura J.

I had lower back pain and neck pain on and off for nearly 20 years. I was at the point where I could not exercise for about a month because of the discomfort. I couldn't even stretch because I was so locked up. I was told by a friend of this Anatoliy Pak guy over at the Healing Arts of Oriental Medicine in Deerfield. He said that Anatoliy helped him alleviate his lower back pain with acupuncture. I knew absolutely nothing about acupuncture, other than it had been around for a long period of time and had stood the test of time in healing people of their ailments. I figured I had nothing to lose so I tried it. It was one of the best decisions I made as within a few weeks, I was back to exercising and stretching. My body wasn't locked up anymore. As a result, I was able to feel better about myself being pain free. I didn't have pain anymore in my lower back or my neck. Anatoliy provides a welcoming and peaceful environment at the Healing Arts of Oriental Medicine. He is a real pro and top of the line in his field. Acupuncture has been able to stimulate my body's healing process over the last three years. It also gives me energy that I didn't have before I started going to Anatoliy for acupuncture. Mike

My experience with Lymphatic Drainage and Healing Touch performed by Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington I believe had a positive effect on reducing inflammation in my body. The few days after therapy I noticed less aches and pain in my muscles & joints. I hold a lot of stress related tension in my muscles, so it was great to have some relief. During the therapy Dr. Sylvia kept me informed with what she was doing and why she was doing it. I liked how she integrated different modalities along with the lymphatic draining. She incorporated some yoga stretching and breathing as well as healing touch techniques. On top of relieving some of my inflammatory muscle and joint pain, Dr.Sylvia found an inflamed lymph node under my arm. It was likely inflamed because I was feeling on the verge of a virus. She was able to drain the lymph node and we could no longer feel an inflamed lump under my arm. I believe this procedure helped me to beat the virus that never transpired. In addition to being a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, Dr. Sylvia has vast knowledge and expertise in the medical field as an Environmental Epidemiologist and Public Health Professional. She has the ability to treat a person holistically while helping them discover how their environment may be affecting their health issues. I would highly recommend Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington as a Nautropathic Doctor for Lymphatic Wellness.

Rita is one of the most influential people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her style of healing is unlike anything I've ever experienced. My mind and body are in such a better state because of her work. The massage combined with working through that week's issues or triumphs is something I consistently look forward to. The environment is incredibly welcoming and calm. The sweet aroma and soft music allow my ever-running mind to relax. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking to have an overall better well-being. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else!

I loved working with Jennifer. I went to her for fertility treatment and unbeknownst to me, I was already pregnant! My progesterone levels were quite low though so through acupuncture and Chinese herbs I have kept them stable. She really listened and I felt like we addressed more than my one issue. I wish I could continue going to here but unfortunately we have moved out of state. She has offered continued support anyway. I can't express how grateful I am for her help and expertise!

Amber made a pain relief lotion for my fibromyalgia pain and muscle spasms. It works better than and prescription pain killer or cream. It provides me with up to 7 hours of no pain whatsoever! She was very professional with insurance and a confidentiality agreement. I plan on continuing to work with Amber.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
