My house is old with old electrical wiring and we did some remodeling in the bathroom including light fixtures. I needed a simple electrical outlet/ plug rewired and Josh installed that in a couple of hours. Looks very nice, matched the bathroom like it has always been there and charged me reasonably per job, not by labor hours plus materials.very pleased and will hire him again.

Paul was great with getting back to me quickly with quotes and scheduling the appointment for the door to get fixed. Everything was explained thoroughly, the quote was broken down by service, labor, parts, etc., and they did a great job fixing my front door. I'm very happy with the Flying Locksmiths!

Kris helped with repairs and upgrades for everything from dry wall, painting, hardware, installation and more. His work showed exceptional craftsmanship. He was able to make some challenging repairs to correct problems from a prior contractor. After that difficult experience with the other contractor, it was a big relief to have someone so skilled and reliable. He was clear about timing and punctual which was very much appreciated. Besides that, he was just a nice person who seemed to care very much about the quality of his work. I have asked Kris to do additional projects for my home and would highly recommend him.

I called Luis because he had painted my son' s house for a reasonable price and did a good job. He did some interior painting for me and updated my laundry room with a new floor, cabinets and paint. Luis worked around my schedule and always got back to me quickly when I texted him. His price was fair and his workers were very polite and professional. I will be calling him again for work in the future.

I have been calling Matt for years. He has helped me complete several projects encompassing things as basic as fixtures and switches to more complex such as service panel upgrades and remodeling. Matt has amazing knowledge about electrical systems and he enjoys breaking it down. Matt has truly brought me and my family better quality of life. He thoroughly plans out what is needed, does not cut corners and always checks and double checks his work. Matt will present different options and never uses cheap products. He is very organized and neat and will see the job to the end. Matt has a vast array of quality tools and equipment, and I admire his preference to items made in the USA. Matt is the go to guy if you are looking to invest into your property. Matt's labor fees have always been reasonable. He is licensed, insured and bonded and will obtain any necessary permits. Give him a call!

Jeff with Fresh Start did several projects in our home. The first one was a project almost no one wanted to touch, yet Jeff came, gave us an honest and reasonable estimate, and got to work. Our gazebo desperately needed new screening but it was a tedious and labor intensive job. Jeff did a great job troubleshooting anytime there was something tricky, and he completed the work in a reasonable time frame. The finished work is fantastic, and the gazebo looks brand new again. I was so happy to have found Fresh Start to do the work!! Jeff also painted our basement, remodeled some built-ins that required drywall repair and installed new fixtures. He took time to evaluate each project properly, gave us a fair estimate, and made sure the work was done beautifully. I like how Jeff honestly communicates his concerns and let's us know when something will effect our estimate, giving us the choice to move forward or not. Jeff is friendly, personable, prompt and organized. We will defiantly use Frest Start again for future projects and highly recommend it for yours.

We could not have asked for a better experience! Brian was extremely punctual, honest and professional. He is an excellent communicator. We received frequent updates on the project in addition to Brian contacting us mid-day if something came up and decisions had to be made (in our case it was due to plumbing issues). He also provided us with receipts for EVERY purchase. He charged us an extremely fair price for labor and it was very clear where our investment was going. He went above and beyond to make sure things were done “by the book” and even updated our shower to code when a previous inspector didn’t catch issues with it. By going above and beyond, Brian found additional plumbing issues that could have easily been looked over or “covered up” which would have cost us thousands in repairs in just a few months. Pictures don’t do his attention to detail and immaculate tile work justice. We were beyond impressed and instantly hired Brian for additional renovations in our kitchen.

TJ worked with us in getting what was need to get the job done. Initially there was some miscommunication with the job and our expectations of what it entailed but after discussing our concerns, with no questions asked,TJ promptly returned to complete the additional work required and we came out satisfied. From the beginning, TJ gave us a price quote that entailed everything he needed. There were no additional surprise fees or hourly labor tacked on. Very prompt and responsible. He earned our trust and we would highly recommend TJ for additional work at our home.

To anyone looking for a contractor large or small Joe is the one you are looking for. My name is Debbie, I live in Glenview Illinois. I have been saving for many years to put an addition on our house. I have been very skeptical of contractors in the past, but my friend who used Joe for his driveway was very happy with the work he did. The business is called Junk It Joes (clean outs, demolition, excavation and concrete). I hired him for an addition on our house and demolition of our one car garage to build a two car garage and a full 500sq ft addition with 9 ft basement on back of our garage, which is always scary putting that much faith in someone to put a hole in your house, and I was nothing less than very pleased. The references I checked all came out excellent and his estimates came out in the same ballpark as for our budget. The speed, in which it got done, even though he is not a large company, was fast. The most stressful part he put behind us and our minds at ease. It saved us a lot of time and money to hire one company when we had concrete companies that did not do excavating and demolition which added allot more to the bids. Joe informed us it is the same equipment to do all this and also said it takes alot more time to have 3 different companies lined up and also the amount we saved we were able to get a lot more. We acted as the general contractor to save money and Joe helped us every step of the way with other contractors so we did not get ripped off. He informed us that we could always fire contractors if we were not happy and by making sure we did not pay in advance for work not completed. With this knowledge he gave us the upper hand. He worked side by side with other contractors to make sure everything went smooth as soon as the house was opened up. He put plywood and plastic up so no saw dust or debris came into the house. The site was cleaned up every day. I didn't have to worry about mud, dust or debris getting into my house. After the third day we were very at ease with going to work knowing Joe and his crew was amazing and they all knew exactly what to do without being told. He informed us him and his three main guys been with him since he started. We had kids there and they were nothing less than always professional and on time. My kids and neighbors kids loved watching the project. Because of this Joe stayed late put orange safety fence up every night another thing not in our bid. He went above and beyond; he also made sure other contractors put it back up. He was very concerned about the kids getting in and hurt. He was also big on the contractors we hired conduct themselves professionally and not use four letter words when having a bad day. It was summer and hot it was august and we let other contractors know Joe wanted to call a meeting of everyone we hired to make sure if they could not get there when called to retract there bid and that was kids and winter around corner. It was not his job but he is such nice guy that everyone respected him including us. I believe he was the youngest owner we hired of a company. He never had to yell or act like a jerk and let everyone know this is someone’s home savings and lifelong dream. He made sure everyone knew that it’s not just a job. He explained all costs and step by step of what would be done. He was very forthcoming if something had to be changed. He is very honest and takes pride in his work. He was always at the job every day and treated it like it was his own house; he worked longer and harder than anyone else. He wanted to make sure, due the fact that houses are so close to each other, that no damage was done to our neighbors house or ours with the big machines used he did it himself. He even put up silk fencing before he started at no charge to us. There was a problem with an electrical line missed marked and had to be moved right in the path of the new addition. When digging it shut the job down temporarily, but Joe got Com Ed out right away to move the line. This was not in our budget but we already knew we saved so much when he had to call me at work he was scared. Glad to inform you with him that was our biggest problem and we lost no sleep. By end of the week the job was back on schedule. We never had to worry about materials not being paid, he did this without asking. When it came time for every payout there were only three. He turned something I thought was going to be a long nightmare into something that did not take much of our time. However the job was big enough Joe explained that what he quoted was able to do extras and not work for free. Not because we were homeowners trying get everything for the cheapest or free. He informed us yes there are bad contractors but there are people that rip them off too. So it works both ways. Joe showed proof of all receipts (which I would never have thought to ask). He also informed us to do the same thing with the other subcontractors we hired that were doing work as well. I have heard of horror stories of liens being put on homes, we never had to worry. We didn't even have to put a deposit down until the concrete was ready to be poured. The job came in under budget and was done very professional. He never tried to over sell us anything we did not need. We asked him about heated concrete floors because we heard other people loved them. Most contractors would jump on it and charge a fortune for extras. He told us that it was very efficient but his crew has only done a couple, it is very time consuming and worries about leaks in the line. Instead of trying to sell us on it, he told us get bids. After we told him how much others cost he said he would do it for the cost of labor only if we order it. He spent so much time with the manufacture on the phone and made sure he would not have to rip his new concrete up. He said he has done a couple but has been lucky, not what we do every day. We paid for the system and he only charged us labor but the deal was my husband had to help so they both learned about it. It cost us less than half the bids we got. We love it, the best thing ever got and we were still within our budget. My husband is a union carpenter whom would work with Joe or recommend him any day. He was very impressed with his work; he went above and beyond what was expected and even threw in a few extras to keep us happy. After the second day I was completely confident I hired the right person. He did a follow up call after the first month, three months later and stopped by just to make sure we were still happy and there were no problems. This is our second year and have passed his name along to all my friends and family. We are happy to report that we love our addition and have made it the dream house. It’s done, furnished and we saved so much we could furnish it. I never thought in million years the project would come under budget. For being the biggest project I ever taken on, without him I don’t think it would have went as well. It was well worth the countless hours my husband and I spent with him he acted more like the general contractor. We had enough for a new concrete driveway in the end instead of asphalt. We offered him a bonus since he acted like a general contractor and relied on him so heavily we felt bad but he turned it down. He said his guys deserve it more than him but he could not take it. He said if we wanted to get them any Christmas presents that he usually gets them gift cards for red wing boots. He said he has not been able to do it past few years because of the economy and after the job, they did need them. He still sends us Christmas cards and so do we. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
