nothing to recommend but just to share my story. --- Fact evaluation: Progress tracked by Matt Johnson Trained by Marcin Grobelny (instagram- @grobelnym) Training Time - October 2016- June 2017 Training Intensity- three hour per week Aim- slim down, lose fat and lose weight. Life Outside Training (when I do not have session with trainer)- cardio (cardio), and 17 running races plus 1 bike event in 9 months (how I spent my lazy weekends). Life Outside Training (reality)- a Mon- Fri job that sit in front of the computer 9-6, sometimes weekday OT till late night, or might take my weekend too. Results- more toned up, people no longer say "it seems like you are a little bit less chubby" but "you look slimmer", ~5% fat ratio down. --- This week marks my last week with Chitown Trainer, it has been a very very great 9 month with Marcin that I did not only learn about workout move but also the psychological, health and nutrition, workout and recovery chapters that is totally a bonus to me. Marcin has been my very first friend in town and probably one that I meet most frequent out of all these time. I learnt about his education, and I believe his academic background and body building experience has made him a very unique trainer because he had been educating me in a all-rounded manner. As time goes, I started to learn more about my body and my mindset, as well as the key to stay consistent and balance through out my days. I eventually train harder and more frequent; and be more honest with myself about the diet and I have dropped my fat ratio through all the months. One thing that I did not expect to happen, is that I actually improved from 32min/5k to 27 min/5k in less than 4 months' time. I did not pick up any running training, I enjoy food fest in the new year, I had deep dish and (quite a lot of) cheat meal, but still, a 5 minute improvement in such a short distant run are actually all from the hard work from weight lifting with Marcin. I used to fear leg day as I started because lower body training back in middle school basketball time has bulk me up so much. However, now I start to love my leg days more -- and as a result I am getting a little big addictive with running as well, which I used to think it is super-very-extremely-so-boring. With the encouragement form Marcin, I actually run more than I thought I would. Counting back the weeks, I have nailed 18 city-events in 9 month's time. Given that Chicago is not my home city, this is definitely a life time PR. Meeting Marcin has definitely become a motion to get up early as we train at 0530 most of the time. As I am leaving Chicago, I would look forward to meet Marcin again with a more toned body to show off how I am able to apply things I learnt from him and all the hard work I put in even I am out of the country. --- Thank you Marcin!! :)

Searching in desperation I found my answer in Weightloss Transformations! My trainer Patrick is one of the most hardworking, supportive, inspiring people I've ever met. He is so much more then a trainer. He becomes an artist sculpting your body with personalized exercise routines. He is a therapist that changes the way you look at food, exercise and what you can achieve. His workout sessions are just as much for your mind as they are for your body. He gives you an easy to follow nutrition plan with new recipes to try every week. Coming to my house takes the issue of actually making it to the gym not an issue or excuse. Patrick is always there for me when I need him. He texts me to remind me to choose happiness that day which means to get my workout in or stops by with a green tea and a hug when I'm feeling down. He's always inspiring me to do better and believes in me when I don't believe in myself. Early on in the beginning of our training I wanted to cancel a workout because I was tired and wanted to stay in bed. I texted Patrick 20 mins before he was supposed to walk through my door saying I couldn't make the workout today. You'll never guess what he did.... he called my bluff and said that he knew I didn't have anything else I needed to do since I was canceling this short of notice! He told me to get out of my head, suck it up and he'd be there in 15 minutes. 15 minutes later he was walking through my door with a smile on his face. You may think that was a crazy move on his part but that was a turning point in our relationship. This is why he is my answer! This is why I haven't given up! Patrick won't let you fail! He is there to help you every step of the way. He invests everything into his clients which is why he is so successful in his transformations. I am down 30 lbs in just a short amount of time and feeling stronger, more energetic and healthy. Everyone around me makes comments on how good I look which hasn't happen in over 8 years. I'm wearing pre pregnancy jeans (comfortably) after 4.5 years of trying to lose all the weight I had gained with my son and never lost until now! I was depressed, fatigued, suffering from fibromyalgia, and so unhappy until I found Patrick. He's greatly improved my life for the better. I still have a long journey to go but now I know I can achieve my weight loss and life goals of being fit and healthy. Thanks to Patrick and his support. If you are serious about wanting to transform your body, mind and life for the better call Patrick! I promise you won't be sorry. He's my answer and I know from experience he can be yours too!

I love working with Shawn. I came to him from PT for degenerating discs. I was not strong, needed to lose a few lbs. and still in a little pain. Because of him - his knowledge and patience I am a stronger and pain free person today. He pushed me when he knew I was ready to be pushed and dialed our training back at times when I felt I needed to. And I like working out more than I used to. Yes, it's become a habit as it should be. Thanks Shawn. I'll be back 😀

Besides, I feel very secure and trusting when I work with him!

I started training with Dan at HiFi Fitness for straightforward reasons. After 2 sedentary winters in Chicago, I had gained nearly 30 pounds while taking "time off the gym" to start my business. I was the heaviest I'd ever been and, even though I was an athlete by nature, I'd only dropped 10 pounds on my own and knew I needed help reaching my goals. That's when I started working with Dan. From the start, Dan emphasized that we were a team working toward my goals together and that the changes I wanted to see in my body required my commitment beyond the three hours we spent every week together. I like that he leverages technology to regularly measure daily progress. Every exercise is keyed in, and detailed notes for each movement goes into his iPad - and I can see my results behind a secure login website. We're only a few weeks into our regimen, but I already feel stronger, and my pants are starting to feel loose. Working with Dan is not just about making changes to your body though. It's also about learning the discipline of movement and having the mental focus to push past the limits you think you have. Dan is a meticulous technician when it comes to form. He isn't a trainer who will just show up and stand over you counting reps. Every movement is intentional and he'll make sure your form is right. He explains how those small tweaks make all the difference. He understands when to get in your face and when to take a softer approach, and he is as committed as I am in helping me reach my goals.

I love training with Tricia! She has been training me for about 4 months now and I'm VERY happy with the results. I've lost inches and weight, and I even have toned muscles that I never had before! I've lost weight in the past doing Weight Watchers, but I never did any strength training like this! I can do "REAL" push-ups now instead of having to be on my knees! I feel great and know I would not have pushed myself to get here without Tricia. I would recommend her to anyone!

I contacted Jill about hiring an in home personal trainer for my 75 year old mother after she had achilles surgery and was done with physical therapy but still unable to function comfortably in everyday life. My mom has been training with Nicki for a few months (she told me in the beginning she was just going to do "a few sessions") and has improved wonderfully. My mother likes to say she "gave up a cruise" to train with Nicki, but she insists it is totally worth it! My mother is not an easy one to please, and was a hard sell for training in the first place. Kudos to Nicki for winning her over and making a difference!

You know that feeling you get when someone looks at you and you can see them calculating in their head- what is different? Training w Chris made me different. I have pretty much always worked out, but working out with weights outside of a class environment wasn't part of my regular routine. I have worked out with trainers in the past, but after a handful of sessions would tire of their plan and go back to classes or machines. The boredom still hasn't kicked in with Chris and it has been about a year. My body is tighter, my butt is higher and I can knock someone out with one punch if they deserve it.

She’s really good with meal plans. She makes you feel comfortable, but at the same time motivates you to work hard during training! Her plans for your workouts are made according to your ability and increase at your own pace. Great training time options as well. She trains you hard, but also make sure of your safety and injuries free! She knows a varieties of excercises, so you would never get bored of the samething every session. You will see results with her!!

From the moment I met Alex , I knew he was a person that could help me achieve new goals and also the one that would help change my life for the better. I started training with Alex last April. During the last 6 months I have been challenged and pushed by Alex, and he has taught me a great deal. He makes working out fun and inspires me to reach new goals. I have been very impressed by Alex's passion to help clients, his knowledge, and his ability to connect with his clients. Alex is very caring and attentive to what each client needs, what their limits are, and how far he can push them. He encourages and motivates me to do better, and yet he knows how much I am capable of. He deserves 5 out of 5 stars from me. I plan to continue to work with Alex.

I have worked with Steve on and off for the past 3 years. Having been a dancer my while life, I wanted to train with someone who understood the importance of core balance, along with being able to push someone to achieve their goals through a variety of different exercises you really don't see others using in the gym. He made our workouts fun, but focused and intense. I sought out a trainer because I had put on a lot of weight since I stopped dancing regularly as I did when I was in college. I ballooned up to over 170lbs and decided I wanted to take back my health, and look like I did when I was in college. I sought out and found the right trainer. Steve is exceptional at what he does, and I would highly recommend him. He kept me strict on the nutrition aspect, and always had me tell him what I was planning on eating after workouts, and what I had been eating since I last saw him. This really kept on my toes and made me accountable in what I do when I'm not training with him. After all the hard work, I lost over 30lbs and hit my weight and fitness goals!! I definitely recommend Steve to help you do the same!

I met Ro through a mutual friend a few years ago. I have been a triathlete for about five years but, the past two years I have given up running and focused more on cycling and swimming. Between teaching a spin class, swimming 3 miles a week, and biking 80 plus miles a week I noticed I just wasn’t recovering fast enough from all the exercise. I sat down with Ro for a one on one consultation. Ro dissected my entire nutrition habits. She took in account for everything I ate from the time I woke up until the time I went to bed, Monday through Sunday. After her analysis of the results she noticed my carb intake was much higher than my protein intake . She introduced me to some foods I never thought I would ever eat like quinoa and tofu. She took my food list and substituted these items for some of the carbs I could take out of my diet. Thanks to Ro I feel my recovery time has been shortened and I can expedite my recovery time. Ro checks in with me on a monthly basis to make sure I’m still on pace. If it wasn’t for this help from Ro I would still be scratching my head searching the Internet for what I’m doing wrong. I owe her a big thanks. Dan T

Being a novice in gym workouts, I decided to take help of fitness trainer, Tyrone Walton. I have attended a total of 5 early morning sessions with him till now and all of them are really helpful. He is extremely knowledgeable and has guided me through the exercises during the sessions. We do have light friendly conversations during the sessions which make them even more effective. The gym itself is very clean and rarely crowded. Also, I find workouts to be appropriate to my level of fitness. Tyrone has a very sound strategy to slowly pace yourself to muscle building. In a nutshell, I will highly recommend Tyrone's fruitful personal training sessions to others and I myself is excited to keep working out with him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
