Chef Most Wanted catered our day after wedding brunch! They were easy to work with and gave us the idea to have an omelet station which was a huge hit. The food was amazing and the staff was very nice. I would hire them again!

We worked with Allen for everything, we recently moved to Texas but our wedding of 150 was in the Chicagoland area. He was great to work with, extremely responsive and had great ideas for menu and serving options for us. We had a buffet appetizer and a BBQ buffet dinner, Allen even worked out a brisket carving station for us. We had rave reviews on all the food! His staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We worked out having 4 people who would man the buffets and our dessert table, clean off the tables, set up a coffee station and package all the food up for us at the end. It went so smoothly we couldn't be happier with the service and hospitality! Would definitely recommend them for any event!!

Ravi has been very helpful throughout the ENTIRE [lengthy] process of catering for our wedding. Easy to communicate with and you can tell he really wants to make your event the best it can possibly be. Everyone raved about the food we had at our wedding (meatball sliders, quesadillas, mac and cheese. We went more casual on the food). One of our friends is even going to use him for their wedding after seeing what an amazing job him and his team did. They we are all rockstars and if I ever have another event I will DEFINITELY be using them. You will not be disappointed in them at all.

There is too much to say about Inglenook catering that my fingers will be hurting by the time I'm finished. From the very first phone call I knew Inglenook catering was the Caterer for our wedding. I have never in my entire life being in the United States Air Force received better customer service than Inglenook. They truly put the customer first! Joe is very responsive and very detailed. The only catering company that does not need the kitchen to be able to serve at the venue. I was extremely surprised! Not to mention the food is immaculate! I just want to Thank Joe for all you guys have done to help us out and we are definitely using you for more catering in the future! You guys are awesome!!

Chef David, I want to thank you for doing such an amazing job for our sons back lawn wedding reception. The food was fabulous, as was the service. All our guests raved how wonderful the food was. Your staff, Mike, Jasmine, Michelle and you CHEF were so hardworking and accommodating and ready to make everything perfect. We will never forget this special day in their lives and you helped make it that way. Everyone should have a Chef David 24-7 in my book. We highly recommend Lakeshore Private Chef & Catering to anyone planning a large or intimate event. Honestly it could not have been better.

We had an amazing holiday party with all of our friends and family over this December. Carol brought the "wow!" with her artful presentation and delicious appetizers, entrees AND desserts! Our guests still talk about how much they loved all of the food. Carol and her team had such professionalism and took care of everything from prep, setup and cleanup. Thanks Carol! We hope to use you again soon for our daughter's wedding shower this Spring!

We had our tasting with Diana today and officially hired her to bake our wedding cake! Diana has been very responsive and allowed us to design our cake with her, which was a lot of fun and helped me envision the final product! I'm planning on following up on this review after the wedding, but so far we are very pleased! Thank you, Diana!

Josh was the head chef for our wedding of about 215 people and he absolutely killed it! He took care of everything, a real full service experience, so we could focus on more important things, like getting married! The food he made was absolutely incredible. Marinated chicken breast, avocado salad, chipotle roasted potatoes, you name it! Many wedding guests personally told us that it was the best wedding meal they had ever had. Some even said it was one of their favorite meals ever, and wanted the recipe. I give a complete recommendation for Josh. His professionalism, his talent, and his personality really make him one of a kind.

As an event planner, I have partnered with Sal y Limon as the caterer for a few occasions such as weddings and social events. From start to finish they are amazing both with their service and being personable. This family owned business is so welcoming and they are willing to work with you to customize your special day. They are amazing in their local community as well, proudly serving our local military veterans. Whether you are planning a birthday party, family gathering, social event, corporate event, wedding, or any other occasion I would highly recommend Sal y Limon for it. You will not be disappointed!

We had Black Fodder cater our wedding reception last month. Their coffee was phenomenal!! It was the best cold brew we have ever tasted. All of our guest were raving about how good it was. The high quality teas (they were phenomenal too) really added to the experience since not all of our guests were coffee drinkers. They definitely thought of all the details! Their presentation was professional yet down-to-earth, from the glass wear to the full service bar that they brought to the venue. We highly recommend them for any event. You won't be disappointed.

I cannot recommend Jennifer and Amour de Cuisine highly enough! My bridesmaids, Aunt and Mom hired Jennifer to cater my bridal shower. The shower had a tea party theme for which Jennifer created the most beautiful tea sandwiches and petite hor'derves. She also made dips and dessert options that my guests raved about. As much as every bite was pure bliss, the meticulous attention to the detail of presentation was a feast for the eyes! I still hear more about the food at my bridal shower more than I do about the food at my wedding! I have worked with other caterers and chefs, but in comparison Jennifer is an artist at her craft. Not only is she a professional and punctual chef, but her party planning skills are an added bonus. When I walked into the dining room where the food was set up for my shower, I felt like I had traveled to a vintage French tea party, and Jennifer set it all up to look that way. She truly set the mood for a perfect pre-wedding celebration. I can't wait to use her again for the next celebration that I host! Thank you, Jennifer, for putting so much elegance, heart, and love into the your work and for making my bridal shower so memorable and special!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
