We hired Rent a Vet for a out of state move. They gave us the cheapest price quote, and we were a little worried their service would reflect the price. However, they showed up on time, got our truck loaded up, and did not mess around. Professional and friendly the entire time. At our new house they moved in fast, and got everything moved where we requested. No damage to any items whatsoever. It's hard to find reputable movers, but Rent a Vet deserves their 5 stars. No games, stress, or hassle with these guys, fantastic experience.

I had a bench, a desk, a dresser, and a sofa that needed to be moved. I needed to move the furniture quickly and didn't have a safe way to do so. I did a google search and discovered bellhops.com through thumbtack. The only thing that made me wonder was the scheduling. I had an issue where I talked to someone and they said a 3:00 position was open. I called to take that spot and they said it was already full. I didn't think anything about that and took a 5:00 spot. They sent me a confirmation email about this and then said that spot was taken too. They were able to get me in at 10am. I know a lot of this is my fault because I scheduled so close to the moving day but it worried me about how their service would be. I was pleasantly surprised when the first gentleman arrived 10 minutes early. He clocked in, which they sent me a text confirming the time, and got straight to work. The second gentleman came at 9:59. The company has a section on the confirmation email asking if the workers showed up on time. It seems like they really want to please the customers. They both introduced themselves and asked about what needed to be accomplished. They were careful with my items and did a great job of loading it onto the truck. One thing I liked was they sent an introductory email of the workers so I knew who to expect at my door. It made the whole experience a little easier. They also sent an email to confirm the time that the workers left at the end. I think one of them forgot to clock out which messed up the amount of time it said they were there. The company was great and fixed the issue right away. I am completely satisfied with my experience. I would recommend them in the future!

Shortly after I posted my relocating needs, the request was addressed and scheduled. Rick worked around my schedule and set up multiple appointments at different locations to get furniture and other items moved promptly. Upon arrival, Tomieka and Tony were extremely professional and efficient. I was very impressed with the service and would highly recommend them to friends and family in the future. Thank you very much!

ABC was very accommodating; moving 40% of my items to a storage unit prior to moving the remaining items on what was a supremely hot August day. They were careful, professional, and hard working. I'll be recommending them to others.

I had an amazing experience with US Van Lines. We currently bought a new home and wanted to find a local moving company due to having a bad experience with another company. Though it was short notice, they were able to dispatch movers out in no time. They were on time, friendly, and fast. My husband and I recommend them to everyone including family and friends. The movers were also very personal, which made our moving experience better. Thanks so much for everything!

They did an excellent job. They were efficient, yet thorough. They took special care of an antique china hutch, making sure it was protected properly as it’s been in my family for many years. I had used another moving company 3 1/2 years ago and they did not take this much care with my things. Great job to the moving team. They were so positive throughout the whole thing.

Stl metro moving company. This company was able to help me out right away, which I really appreciated. They were very, very accommodating and willing to allow me to make changes from my original description of the job. I can’t say how much that meant to me! I needed items moved delivered to three different locations. They were very patient with me and my requests! In addition, they took great care with the furniture, and some of the pieces were antique and needed extra attention in handling. Phone calls were returned very quickly and I think the communication was excellent. All in all, my move was done with great value. And certainly, they earned my future loyalty. I think you’d be pleased as well.

We have moved several times and a few times across country. Our experience with Great Nation Moving was by far the easiest and hassle free experience that we have had with moving. They sent over an appraiser who was able to give us a quote after walking through our house and seeing what we owned and were moving. He was within $50 of our ending price, so it extremely accurate. The pricing was in-line with several other companies that we had quote out the job. Rose, their sales/account manager, was great. We explained that we needed to move from within a specific time frame, and they were able to accommodate to our schedule. We were driving to our new home as soon as the movers were done packing everything up, and they even accommodated a faster pack up by adding an additional member to the crew packing up our belongings. They delivered our items in less than a week, which was much faster than our past experiences. Rose kept me posted on the progress of everything throughout the process and seemed to be working 24 hrs a day to make sure we were comfortable and in the know of what was going on. She even called within 30 minutes of the delivery of our items to see how everything went. We did have some slight damage on one item, which we were not bothered with as the item was beat up from a previous move. Without us filing a complaint, Rose was able to get us a check to cover the damages. Overall it was some of the best customer service I have experienced. Its always a headache and there is always the hidden issues that pop up along the way, however, I felt Rose kept us in the know and ahead of the curve with the move. That goes a long way when you have literally everything you own in their hands.

Dan was absolutely great! He contacted me quickly and quoted me a fair price to pick up a couch from across town and move it into our apartment. They were on time and even put the feet back on the couch for us. Well worth the money.

I ordered a move for my family through this company. I was moving to Belleville metro from the countryside in Oakdale. Quinn's crew arrived on time and did the move without problems. I would have to rate this a great moving company. I'm currently having them do some handyman work in my new house and can't wait for my newly tiled bathroom!

I do not have enough words to express how amazing this company is. Joe responded immediately to my post on thumbtack yesterday morning ( around 9 AM) and he and his company began moving my furniture about 2 hours later. Not only were they quick to respond and begin working, but they were also professional. They were a two man team with their own truck and were able to move everything from my one bedroom apartment ( with furniture including a solid oak bed set, large couch, and bookcase) with only 2 trips to my storage unit and one last trip to my new home. Absolutely nothing was damaged or broken when it arrived at my new home and they made sure that I knew where all of the pieces of my furniture were so that I would have no problem when I was ready to reassemble everything. There was carpet in the apartment they moved me from and during the entire process, they took their shoes on and off, going up and down 3 flights of stairs, just to make sure the carpet wasn't damaged. They also helped me wrap anything they felt needed to be wrapped so it wouldn't be damaged during storage and they talked to me through the whole process to ensure that they were doing what I wanted them to do. They took some of my things to storage, where they unloaded and stacked everything neatly and left me enough room to get to the things I need. The rest of my things they took to my new home, where they brought everything in and placed it where I asked them to. They finished with me around 3/3:30 pm. They were so great, my mom hired them that same day (yesterday) to haul several things she had been wanting to get rid of (mattresses, tvs, etc). Polite, courteous, professional, expeditious, and kind, are just a few words to express the standard of service they provide. If you need help moving or having things hauled away (or any other service because Joe and his company provide many services) please, use this company. I'll definitely be hiring them again and my mom will be too. Thank you so much Joe to you and your company for helping me and giving me the best customer service I've experienced in quite a while. -Whitney

We moved a 2500 sq. ft. atrium home. The movers who came to help us were exceptional. They were considerate and understanding in all regards. They will be my first choice if we move again. I would recommend their services to anyone who needs to move. Everyone involved in helping us was out standing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
