Bob was quick to come out and diagnose the problem. Turns out, it will be too expensive to fix my hvac problem and he suggested I just replace it if possible. He doesn't do new installation. He could have encouraged me to fix it so that he could get the money, but he was honest enough to advise replacement of the unit instead. A man of integrity from my experience. Go with Bob!

Great company! Everything went perfect for me from very beginning.. it appeared that my furnace stopped working in a middle of the night. I needed replacement asap because we have a 2 year kid. I texted Larry explained that I need a new furnace asap. Larry was very nice said, that someone will come today. I was impressed because previous companies were keep saying that it's very busy and they can stop by only within couple days. Anyway Erik came to us and he brought space heaters for us before he even started to do something. That was just a Wow... he explained that with all of the rebates it's actually cheaper to replace all system and it does make sense! Also I was also thinking about replacing Ac as well because it should be done at the same time.. so we agreed on everything, price was comfortable for me, but my biggest concern was when can they install the system .. I was very surprised when Erik said that they will do it next day because I have a small kid.. that was my second wow for that day.. next day 2 installers came to my house right on time, they were very clean, they had shoe covers on them. They told me that they will try to make it fast and not noisy.. honestly after 2 hours I even forgot they are still in my house. It took them 7 hours for a complete installation. Now it's nice and warm and I can feel the difference between old furnace and new one. Thanks Larry and Erik.

Tony and his son came out and were SO wonderful! I had gotten water in my dryer from the outlet in my window well, and it had flooded my basement. Tony assessed the situation and checked both my washer and dryer......drained the dryer, saved it, and got it working again....then installed a new outlet and sealed up all the ducting. Very professional and did a great job at a reasonable price.....I recommend him highly and will be calling for him again whenever I need help :-)

I noticed water dripping from my furnace and I called RB Temperture Service. The technician Robert returned my call within 10 minutes and told me to turn the power off at the furnace to help prevent any damage to the furnace until he got there. He then showed up within an hour and explained to me what the problem was. I have to admit that I was very worried that I would need a new replacement but it turned out to be just a clogged drain line. Thank you for your honesty and quick response Robert! I'll definitely be calling you if I have any other problems.

Vlad (owner of GTC) is very good & professional. Used him on 3 separate occasions - (1) replace heater. It went out on Dec 31, 2015 !!! Vlad came out in the evening, to see if it could be repaired on the spot, and then cam back first thing on Jan 2nd ( when the supplier opened so that he could replace the unit). Did everything cleanly! Reasonable price - even considering he came out on holiday. ( I tried to use ABC Heating emergency - quoted me $8000 or 2.3 times more - tried to use my desperate situation) . Anyways, Vlad did it better and reasonably priced! (2) Also used Vlad to replace my 10 year old AC. No problems, as expected. (3) Asked Vlad to come out and help with installing Nest thermostat. It's not difficult to do on your own - but wiring to the old unit looked messed up - and I didn't want to take a chance. Vlad cleaned and rewired it and helped me install the unit.

The repair Technician, Miguel Vargas, responded to my call for water heater repair on a Sunday and was able to get the water heater functioning in the interim period while the part that needed to be replaced was on order. They turned this around in 24 hours and my water heater was fully repaired. Miguel was friendly and explained the issue fully to me. The pricing was fair and the work was done expeditiously. I would highly recommend him and All-4Climates, for Heating, Cooling and Water Heater issues.

Jason provided a high level of service. We had other HVAC/Boiler vendors and all of them recommended a boiler based on the square footage of the unit as opposed to the length of the coils in the house. Jason properly measured and recommended a boiler for us that was not only right for the space, but right for the existing infrastructure. Jason was professional, very knowledgeable, punctual and did the work at a very fair price. Jason also installed a water heater for us the same day. I highly recommend Jason for boiler and water heater installations!

We had an emergency situation with our hot water heater that they resolved very quickly. They were prompt, knowledgeable, had great communication through the process of what turned out to be a very big job. They really took care of us. We immediately hired them to take care of a routine maintenance job as well. They were great.

Had them out for a hot water heater install. Communicated in advance with Paul via email to determine heater options and arrived at best selection. Installation tech arrived on time and we had no issues with his work. The job ended up being slightly more expensive than quoted because the new heater was a bit taller than the old one; required the existing PVC pipe connectors to be sawed down, the tech explained the issue, recommended a solution, and asked for my permission to proceed at the (slightly) higher install cost. Overall good experience.

Jaime installed a humidifier in my very dry home. Jaime was very professional, confirmed our appointment time at least 3 times and was very punctual and efficient. He was very thorough and walked me through the entire process. He explained what he would be doing before doing the work. Afterwards he walked me through all of the controls and provided a warranty. Not only for the humidifier unit but on his labor. I will definitely keep Jaime's information on hand and would highly recommend him for any of your HVAC needs. Thank you Jaime for making my house more of a home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
