I chose The Still Life Photography to photograph my wedding ceremony and reception and was so glad I did! It was a pleasure working with Nicole because she was very accommodating and took the time to learn about the various traditions surrounding my Islamic Wedding Ceremony. I sent Nicole a whole folder of photo ideas that I wanted and she made it a priority to make sure I was content with all the shots taken on the day of! She also took it upon herself to incorporate her own artistic style into the photos. I was initially drawn to her and Jay's candid, "captured in the moment" photos on the website and I can't wait to see the final edited photos. I was very impressed with her professionalism and enthusiasm and would definitely recommend The Still Life Photography.

Could not have had a better experience with a photographer. Harry was responsive to my initial requests, was punctual, took candid and nice quality photos of our events (trust me, this is not always the case, even with professional photographers!), he sent me the pics quickly, and top of all that, he generously donated to our cause!

Mark was an amazing photographer. We booked him for our engagement photos, and we had such a great time with him and are extremely impressed with the photos he has sent us. He had an amazingly fast turnaround time for some sample photos with just a 2 day wait from our shoot. For the rest of the photos it only took him a couple of weeks! His work with lighting was spectacular, and he really made my fiancé and I enjoy the whole experience. We would highly recommend him to anyone wanting any photos taken, whether engagement, wedding, or even just portraits.

David took my wedding and newborn baby photos. He is a true creative genius and created amazing and unique photographs that will be treasured for many years to come. He is extremely patient, has a great eye for detail, and he made my newborn sleep in minutes! He made sure we were on the same page every step of the way to ensure we would receive the photos that we wanted while adding extra shots that we also fell in love with. If you are looking for the best, look no further!

We hired Chicago Portraits for our wedding and we are so happy that we did! They were very responsive to our needs for multiple events and communicated with us every step of the way. We had Bharani as our photographer, who was eager to understand our vision. We first had a phone conversation to see if Chicago Portraits would fit our needs and once we decided to move forward, Bharani made himself available to meet in person prior to any photo shoot to go over the details. He was very flexible and accommodating to our schedules. Also, we aren't the most comfortable couple in front of the camera, but the photographers put us at ease and even offered suggestions for poses. They were very patient to capture the best photos possible. We're extremely pleased with the results. We intend to hire them again for future events and would highly recommend them to anyone else!

The experience with Chris was fantastic! Not only is he a consummate professional, but he made the experience so fun, easy and positive. Unlike most family photographers, there was nothing staged. He just let us play and talk, and captured the most magical moments of our family being ourselves. I would highly recommend him to any family who is tired of standing by a picket fence or in front of a backdrop for their family photos. It is truly a unique end product that you will treasure!

We held a 50th wedding anniversary with about 80 people invited for lunch and a slide show. We asked Joan to photograph every guest (as singles, couples or family) as they came in through our greeting reception process. Joan arrived on time amid the chaos of my family setting up the American Legion Hall for the event. (Four people cutting and arranging 270 stems of flowers and decorating 12 tables and we were late!) Joan set up her backdrop and lights in her designated corner and almost immediately started to photograph our guests as they arrived. Joan was amazing with the guests and accommodating with every situation. She photographed guest families with 3 year old children through a blind nun family member with beauty and dignity. Joan understood the general assignment well and executed it beautify with no supervision. When situation were not clear, she asked what was required. Working with her was like working with an old friend of many years. Our friends and family commented on Joan's friendly manner and demeanor in working with them. Joan is a "natural" for this kind of work and exceeded our expectations. We asked for and received a DVD of all her photography on this event which she produced before she left. Our intention is to print pictures to send to our friends and family along with the thank you letters and another set of prints to make what will be a very special 50th anniversary memory book.

I was very impressed by the quality of my business portrait photographs taken by Mr. Vandever. He was professional, honest, detail-oriented, and an excellent value. I am really picky with photos, and I ended up with several great photos that were excellent. I originally contacted him because I had heard from two corporate executives that he is is the "go-to" photographer in Northwest Indiana for high-quality portraits. I definitely found that to be the case. I will use him for any future photo needs for myself, my small business, and my family.

We used Portrait of Light photo booth for our wedding on October 21st. They were punctual and very professional! We heard tons of positive and great reviews from our wedding guests. And at the end of the night we received a photo book of all the picture strips taken during the night. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a photo booth for any type of event.

Freddy and his teammate Kirsten were very professional and did a wonderful job of capturing some beautiful photos of myself, husband, and our near 6 month old. It's not easy to wrangle in a child and get some good smiles, but they did it! We definitely recommend and will be using Freddy again in the future if we want more pictures.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

How much does baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.
