I had scheduled a repair with Sam for a dryer repair. We set the appointment and everything was good until we found out the part we need was no longer manufactured. It would have taken 4-6 weeks to ship and my wife and couldn’t wait any so we canceled the appointment. But a day later Sam wrote me back saying he found the parts needed! It was great because we couldn’t afford another appliance. Sam came out on the day scheduled and scheduled time and knock it out. He was great. No issues and I’d hire him again in a heart beat.

Dan came to replace our leaky water heater. He was on time, courteous and professional. He obviously knows what he is doing, and I would trust him with other projects in my home. He was also very fair with his pricing. I am always hesitant about hiring people online and I don't leave many reviews, but I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with Dan.

We were happy with the fact that someone came out on the weekend to replace the water heater. We were NOT happy about the fact that we were told one price when he arrived and that price increased after the work was finished.

The repair Technician, Miguel Vargas, responded to my call for water heater repair on a Sunday and was able to get the water heater functioning in the interim period while the part that needed to be replaced was on order. They turned this around in 24 hours and my water heater was fully repaired. Miguel was friendly and explained the issue fully to me. The pricing was fair and the work was done expeditiously. I would highly recommend him and All-4Climates, for Heating, Cooling and Water Heater issues.

Jim, and his team were professional, and respectful. We had a dishwasher hose leak while gone at work. When we arrived home the water had damaged our kitchen floor, and leaked into our finished basement. We had family coming in from out of town, which was only three weeks away. Jim completed the work ahead of schedule, and made it look better than before. We were so impressed with his work that we referred him to our neighbors.

Overall a very good experience. We discovered we had no hot water on a Wednesday evening around 7 PM. Adam responded promptly and was at our house by 9 AM the next morning! He ultimately determined we needed a new water heating system and thoroughly explained various options. (We are not the original homeowners). Ultimately we decided to replace our two tank system with one slightly larger tank. We had hot water by Friday afternoon and the system continues to work fine! Adam left the work area very clean and disposed of the two water heaters plus the box/packing for the new water heater. Very much appreciated!! There was an extended period mid-job when Adam was not contactable. He had left to acquire the new tank and parts, stating he would be back within 2-3 hours. After 5-6 hours with no contact, we became concerned for his well-being. We could not reach him, texts went unanswered, and calls went right to voicemail. We discussed this with him in person when he returned and he was very receptive to this feedback. We would definitely recommend Adam and not hesitate to contact him for other home maintenance needs, should these arise.

I hired Albert to renovate our main bathroom, which was in desperate need for attention. We weren't sure how much damage was underneath the tile but knew it needed to be fixed right away. Ultimately I went with Albert because he was friendly, punctual, and full of recommendations that really made sense. He came on time to the quote and was able to start working the following week. He actually accompanied us to Home Depot to help pick out the materials best suited for our job; since we are selling our house in a few months, price was a big factor and he was cognizant of that. There were a few unanticipated problems once he started working (lots of water damage, etc.), but he resolved all of them satisfactorily. All in all I'm very happy with the results and will likely be hiring him again when it's time to replace our front door and repaint; he does everything except roofing.

I first found Master Plumbing about a year and a half ago. Our hot water heater had gone out and I couldn't get anyone over to fix it. Master Plumbing was here in no time and very reasonably priced! I have had work done on the house before, but never did anyone put down drop cloths and the plumber even wore disposable shoe covers to protect our carpet! Since then we have used Master Plumbing to replace our outside faucets, and our kitchen sink. The Plumbers are very polite, clean, and very knowledgeable. We were informed about a battery back up system that they offer (which we will be installing as soon as we get our tax refund) tragedy has struck close to home twice in the last year including my parents hot water heater which went out when they were on vacation! Being able to protect our home while being away is peace of mind! We were also informed on how we can install a second hot water heater which we will also be doing. (with another kid on the way we can guarantee everyone gets a hot shower/bath). I would highly recomend Master Plumbing to my friends, family, neighbors, and whoever needs a job done at a great price!

We had several projects lined up moving into a new home Jan. 2016. Curt handled everything in one day with no problems: Remove 4 used Kohler toilets and transport them to the new home Remove 3 new toilets and transport them to the old house Install 7 toilets, 3 Kohlers in the new home and 4 in the old house Swap InSinkErator disposals between kitchens (Our good one for the cheap contractor one) Remove existing cheap sump pump and install two new Ion battery back-up system sump pumps Remove existing kitchen sink faucet and install a new Grohe faucet Install RO system faucet and Grohe soap dispenser at kitchen sink If you need a plumber who knows how to get things done, I would recommend you give Curt a call. It's now a year later and everything has been fine.

Matt was EXCELLENT. He was extremely attentive to my issue with replacing my water heater immediately not knowing the current issue I was having with another company who stood me up for two days in a row. Matt came out to my home within 30 minutes of me contacting knowing that we have been without hot water for two weeks due to the delivery of the new water heater then issues with someone coming out from the other company. Matt's work was fast and superb. I am recommending his services to everyone. Thanks again Matt for your prompt response, my family really appreciates it!

We noticed our water heater was leaking a bit. Contacted thumbtack and received responses right away. Mr Kramer answered all my questions before I hired him and provided me with a quotation quickly. We knew it was no rush to get this job completed on a sunday evening and scheduled an appointment for first thing in the morning. He came the next morning as scheduled and carefully removed my old water heater and replaced my new water heater in no time. The service was excellent. He was very nice and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend him to everyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
