I purchased a home that needed a new roof. The house was built in 1930 and had the original cedar shake with 3 layers of shingles on top of that. I knew it was going to be expensive. I got several estimates and after meeting these guys.....I pretty much knew they would be my choice. They were friendly, honest, and I trusted them to do a great job. Everything was explained to me. I was kept up to date. All the employees were hard workers and very nice. Yard, attic, and garage were cleaned up afterwards. A wonderful company to hire for your roofing job. Looks great. My neighbors are thrilled. I am a very happy customer. Their price is very fair and all products used are top of the line. Great warranty. Don't hesitate to call Toye Contracting for your roofing needs. You will be a very happy customer. I have NO complaints.

Responded rapidly to a short notice project, provided excellent guidance on materials and technique. Proposal was printed on site after the project requirements were established. Reliable communication before, during, and after the project. Site was left debris free and post project interface with the city inspectors office provided a superb "turn-key" result. I would highly recommend RSR to ANYONE seeking a full value roofing solution with warranty.

George and his staff did an excellent job with our roof and siding! I would recommend everyone to use thumbtack when you have hail damage to your roof and or siding. George was professional and did a great job dealing with my insurance company. He would not let State Farm cut any corners and fought for us to get the job done correctly. Insurance companies are known to cut corners and take the cheaper route, but George being an adjuster handled our appointed adjuster from state farm. George put our insurance company in there place and went above and beyond! I will only use Gold Standard Restoration for roof and siding going forward! Thank you Gold Standard Restoration!

I have never had such a positive experience with any contractor as I have with Mike and his team. The work is super solid, they know their stuff. Mike's personality is something to witness! He's all pro, AND all human. Some contractors rest their laurels on craftsmanship and don't deliver the human experience. Mike and his team have both!!! If you need high quality seamless gutters from a team who you might see yourself having a beer with: LOOK. NO. FUTHER! Mike is your guy!

Aaron painted my kitchen and dining room walls, baseboards as well as cupboards. He didn't have many reviews when I was seeking a painter. I usually go by someone that has a lot of reviews but Aaron came to my house to do an estimate and pretty much right away I wanted to hire him and this is why... Aaron is very pleasant to talk to, great personality and eager to do the job. Yes I've gotten other bids for the job, with contractors having several positive reviews and the cost of the bids were ok but Aaron was very reasonable in cost and experienced. Getting a cheap deal is great but I look for the personality...do I get along with this person, eagerness, etc, so cost doesn't matter that much to me. Aaron has a great work ethic and I gave him a chance and he was phenomenal. Job was completed in a timely manner. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this gentleman for your painting needs.

Our old asphalt shingle roof needed to be replaced. We got estimates from several contractors and the one from Stenes was very competitive. The owner, Byron Harrell, was helpful and easy to deal with. The work crew was courteous, professional and did an excellent job. Stenes Contractors is the first company I would call for another project.

Dan is very knowledgeable and has great people in his crews. I had my roof's on the house & garage removed & replaced and they completed them in one day. Also had fascia rot replaced and due to the extent that took two day's but again the attention to detail was top notch. Very pleased with the work and at a very competitive price which after all said & done came in lower than the estimate and well less than a couple other estimates which still had the variable of wood replacement...a pleasant surprise. I would, and will, recommend him to anyone looking for an honest, dedicated, knowledgeable, conscientious, detail oriented contractor. Thank you Dan & Crew's for your excellent work. Put a new roof on my family room along with correcting siding that had been installed incorrectly and caused roof leakage. It came out perfect without me having to stress about where was my contractor, does he know what he is doing, and would it be ok! He did above and beyond what I asked for orginal bid. I wish you were still in Illinois. Can you recommend anyone up here?

Replace old roof and gutters. Some plants damaged even though tarps were used to catch most of the tear off debris. Misc debris (nails, bits of shingles, plastic, etc) in plants and on the ground. Owner addressed these issues . He was great at helping select the perfect color and style shingle and was very helpful.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
