"This was my first appointment with Sergio. He was VERY responsive from my first contact onward. My schedule changed a bit, and he was graciously flexible in working around my delay. He met me at the door with a friendly smile, and spoke with me for a few minutes to identify areas which needed focus. The massage was very professional and therapeutic, with him asking several times if the pressure was OK. He focused on my problem areas, and really helped loosen up some very tight muscles. Sergio was very polite and professional throughout, and I would not hesitate to recommend him. I know I will be going back again!"

"This was an excellent experience. After going to several places looking to get a good deep tissue massage, I have finally found someone who can apply the needed pressure to get my back and shoulders feeling great. I would recommend Studio Q to anyone looking for a quality massage."

"I have back problems and Sylvia is absolutely the best massage therapist I have ever used. I travel quite a bit and have visited other therapists in different locations, but none like Sylvia. She is very skilled with her hands and super professional. I recommend her without reserve. If you have back problems or are just looking to relieve stress through massage therapy, look no further. She is awesome!"

"This was my first pre-natal massage and I could not have been happier with the experience. Orawan used the perfect amount of pressure and really was able to tell exactly what was needed. She used a combination of pressure, warm towels, and hot stones. She even took the time to help me understand how pre-natal massages are different than the typical massage. The whole experience was relaxing and yet still was able to get all the tension out. The room was private and very clean with some additional touches of luxury, including warm tea before the massage and fresh fruit water afterwards. The room was nicely decorated and had relaxing music. I will definitely be booking a massage again further along in my pregnancy (and I look forward to other types of massages after the baby is born too). Orawan is very professional and requires a doctor's note allowing the massage. She has both cash (preferred) and credit options for payment, which is very convenient. I highly recommend Orawan Well Being as a place to go for a pre-natal massage."

"Thumbs way up on this gifted massage therapist! And hold them up high across the board! Pete is one of the most talented and engaging massage therapists I've encountered. He impresses on every dimension. Beautiful spa-like studio that shuts out every distraction and transports you to the most tranquil place you can imagine? Check. Highly skilled massage work that reflects years of training as well as the kind of intuition you can't teach? Check. A warm, friendly engaging manner from initial contact to scheduling to actual massage? Check. Keen judgment on when to engage the client in pleasant conversation and when to just let his excellent work speak for itself? Check. Pete hits it out of the park on every one of these elements. I'm already looking forward to my next appointment. He's the best kept secret in the Chicago metro area. But I suspect the word on this talented therapist will spread soon enough. Check him out. You'll be thrilled. I was."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
