During an inside inspection, People's gas found 2 coupled flex pipes connected to our dryer and decided to disconnect our dryer and cap the connection (even though there was no gas leak). This left my spouse and I going to the laundromat for about a month and a half. I tried to hire a plumber through Westward, our condo management company, and that never panned out. so decided to look elsewhere for a solution. I signed up for Thumbtack and set up my project. Salvo with ISA Euro Pro Construction responded within an hour of my posting, we communicated about a time to come out, and they met me at my condo the next day. We'd received quotes to open the wall and that would have been a lot of time, materials + drywall and a lot of labor time. Salvo and Vito came up with a very nice and innovative solution to extend the pipe downward on the wall behind the washer and then installed a 5 foot flex pipe across to the dryer. The install looks great and I'm very happy with the final product. I am extremely satisfied with their solution, their professionalism, and the price; I highly recommend ISA Euro Pro Construction.

We have had Ron do several small projects in our home: install a bathroom vanity and faucets; patching a hole in our drywall. All projects were done professionally and at a very reasonable price. We have other projects that we will ask his help with in the future.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

We are extremely pleased with the job done by Kevin and Otis of Patch Boys of Cook County North! Our house is 90 years old and has many odd quirks, one of which was a wood-paneled wall in our soon-to-be nursery. Underneath was old plywood and even older sheetrock. Kevin and Otis did a fantastic job removing the wood panels and installing drywall, and Otis primed the wall so we can paint it later this week. We lost some wood trim in the process, and Otis was nice enough to come back the next day and help install some new trim we bought, on his day off no less. If you have a drywall job, don't hesitate to hire these guys. They were professional and did an awesome job, and gave us some much needed peace of mind with a baby on the way in 5 weeks!

Great work - done exactly as promised, on time and at a very competitive cost! Very happy with Gus / Weather Shield and highly recommend. He installed additional attic insulation, taking care to ensure our soffit ventilation and bathroom vents were properly vented. He also installed some rim joist insulation in our crawl space. GREAT WORK!

LaRue was awesome! He was able to comeby quickly (within 24 hrs of contact) and did a great job installing insulation in our basement that was required by the City of Racine. Very friendly, personable and very knowledgeable. He will be the handyman we turn to first for future projects. We highly recommend him.

Ed did an excellent job. I love my kitchen remodel. I get so many compliments on my new backsplash. He had cabinets, dishwasher and counter tops installed quickly. Plus installed a new window, ceiling fan and doors. He even did some minor upgrades at no cost, like changing my outlets. Was veryour friendly and efficient. Already have plans for him to do more work, backsplash in my bathroom and flooring in basement.

They were able to knock out two of our projects, drywall and paint in 3 days. We hired them on Friday and they started on Saturday. They were done on Monday. Perfect Painters are extremely efficient, well priced, and easy to work with. I do wish they took credit cards as their website advertises. It was a HUGE pain to get cashier's checks, as our banks systems were down for most of all Saturday (of course this is not the fault of Perfect Painters). It is simply the way of the world to accept credit cards.

Highly recommended..! It was a pleasure working with Joel. He made the entire project pain-free and worry-free. From the estimate, to the roof tear off, to the install, to the insulation and duct work, the job was done professionally and clean. I've worked with many a contractor and Joel & his crew are worth doing business with. Thanks much HGR.

I have a small home rehab business learned the hard way that a qualified insulation team is very important. I reached out to Thumbtack with my latest full gut rehab home project and hired Illinois Insulators. Luke and his team were timely, professional, knowledgable, and passed the Village Inspection with flying colors. Illinois Insulators have the tools; labor pool and required compliance to do any level of insulation project. For this home they used BIB except for the basement which is BATT; they also do fire stopping prior to inspection which I did not know and will use this service in the future. I was 100% impressed with the results and price point. Highly recommend and will be using them exclusively for future projects!

We hired this team to paint our laundry room walls, trim, and ceiling. We also had some drywall repair on our new laundry room bench that was previously a closet. They exceeded our expectations! They finished the job in a timely manner and were able to come to our house right away to give us a quote. We also asked them if they could mount a tv for us and they did that as well. We were very satisfied with their service and work. We would definitely hire them again!

Very professional work, applied drywall to a complicated situation involving an exposed wall with external piping. Per my request he created openings for certain access pipes but did this in an artful manner. Otis is a cheerful professional who completed the work promptly in a short period of time and left my condo without any debris or signs he was there, just a perfect wall. Very reasonable price.

I called Kevin in to work on my kitchen drywall which was a bit of a mess. Half of the walls were new drywall and the other half was compiled of the original plaster. I thought this was be an impossible job, but Kevin made the walls look great and you cant even tell where the seams are between the two materials. What's better, is the Kevin was easily the most responsive contractor I have ever worked with. Very flexible to accommodate our schedule, polite and communicative and made sure we knew where he was at each step of the project. Great experience and I will have him back to work on other projects without a doubt!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
