This was the best decision my husband and I could have made when it came to working on our house. Chano and his team were exceptional. Chano and his team replaced our kitchen floor tile, refinished all the wood throughout our house, painted all our walls and ceilings, changed (and painted) all new 6 panel doors with new hardware, changed lighting and outlets and so much more. The work was done extremely clean and was always dusted and vacuumed for us. We never had to worry about making sure things we didn't think of were taken care of. His team always asked us questions to make sure we had the final decision even though we really didn't realize all the extras that were great ideas to think about before we started this project. They were always kind, courteous and willing to go above and beyond. The pricing was spot on with the perfection of the work. A Plus Decorating comes highly recommended from me. I would definitely look into their services if you are looking for great service and beautiful work in your home.

Mike installed laminate flooring throughout the main level of our townhome including the kitchen, dining room and great room. The entire job only took him one day to complete. He was thorough and extremely neat. It's been great having the laminate flooring since we have two pets which makes any clean-up fast and easy. We plan on using Mike whenever we move into our next home, especially, if there aren't hardward floors!

Ron did a fantastic job installing laminate wood flooring in our living room and bedroom. He was easy to work with and was willing to work around our schedule. Ron was also very helpful in the selection process as his advice helped us select the right floor for our needs. All and all, we are very happy with our new floors and appreciate the attention to detail that Ron contributed.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

We hired Mark to tear out vinyl tile from our 2 bathroom floors and replace it with ceramic. The price he quoted us was the price we paid and his work was fantastic. We had both our bathrooms finished in only 3 days total. Couldn't be any happier!

Ron did a vinyl plank flooring job for us. He was quick to provide a quote for us and offered to pick up our flooring materials for us. We have had a different company do a vinyl floor install for us and Ron’ work quality, and professionalism blew them out of the water. We are very happy with the work he did and we would definitely recommend him to anyone.

Corey came highly recommended from a relative and I have to say that we were so pleased to have found him. Corey installed a new laminate floor in our loft and main floor, as well as, painting and installing a new tile hearth in another room. The job required not only technical expertise but creativity since he had to rebuild our stair case to match the laminate. The quality of the work was top notch. He is a great communicator and so easy to work with. . .even when we reached a hiccup or two. Corey was quick to fix any issues and walk us through any issues he was having. As for price, we could not be happier.

I have a charming historic house in Hinsdale built in 1976. Was charming except for the basement, which I considered "the dungeon" until Nick recently remodeled it! It has a stone rather than poured foundation, typical of its age, that has been a problem since I moved in 30 years ago. The walls crumbled over time as mortar between the stones disintegrated. It's been very hard to find anyone who knows how to address this problem. Over the years several people put cement on the walls to stop the crumbling, but none ever did a very good job and it needed to be redone every few years. Nick Duta was the only one I met, who seemed to know what to do with it. I was impressed from the start at how extremely detailed and complete his proposal was. His crew spent a number of days just hammering out all the loose motor from the inside walls, and part of the outside, which no one else ever did. They dug a trench outside the house at the worst cracked wall, removing all the disintegrated mortar there, then put layers of waterproof concrete on all the inside walls and gaps in the outside wall, and sealed the outside with additional tar and foam. They also broke through the outside stair-landing concrete and installed a drain, tying it into the inside basement drain to eliminate rain water accumulating outside the door. They then repaired the existing basement floor, cracked due to water damage, putting down wire mesh and a 2 inch layer of concrete over the existing floor and then vinyl tiles. They also replaced all the galvanized plumbing pipes that I had thought was done when the house was remodeled 5 years ago by another company, but learned from Nick that they did not actually do this. Finally they put in some needed electrical outlets and built tasteful looking closets with louvre doors around all the basement utilities (Washer and Dryer, Boiler, Sump pump etc), also installing a new hot water heater and utility sink. Thanks to Nick my basement is no longer a dungeon, and now looks quite nice and is very functional. This was all done at what I believe was a fair cost. It was a pleasure doing business with Nick as he is extremely competent, honest, conscientious and hardworking. He has high standards and can address almost any infrastructure issue. He is easy to work with and attentive to one's concerns. I felt extremely lucky to have found him to do all this difficult work! I would certainly give him my highest recommendation and am hiring him again to rebuild my front staircase, a measure of my satisfaction with his work.

Very good work, very prompt, clean, and courteous. I will be hiring him again for work in the future. He installed tile in my bathroom, and put a new subfloor down and then installed sheet vinyl in my other bathroom, and is going to be doing backsplash, and trim.

I purchased my first condo this winter. It needed quite a bit of work done to update the unit. I hired kareem to tile my kitchen based on a recommendation from a friend. I was extremely pleased with work & how precise was. He took up a god awful vinyl sheet that was at least thirty years old. I originally wanted just 12*12 tiles installed. Well upon looking for my tile color, I found a pattern I fell love with at lowes. I took a picture & sent it to Kareem to see if could change my pattern style. Without hesitation he agreed it could be done. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Kareem is one of several people remodeling my condo & all my experiences were not great. He always responded & kept me in the loop on what was going on & thats important to me. I definitely will be using him again.

It was a pleasure working with Kevin and his crew. I had them refinish 4 rooms of hardwood and lay new luxury vinyl tile in the kitchen and dinette. Kevin’s price was fantastic compared to other contractors, Kevin was unbelievably personable while being professional, his crew were outrageously polite and professional, and their craftsmanship was outstanding! I had one small issue and Kevin himself came out to fix it at no extra cost even though the issue was COMPLETELY MY FAULT because I forgot to tell his crew how I wanted a certain area trimmed out. Beyond that, one of the bedrooms “just didn’t look right” to Kevin when it was done and he had his crew re-do it. He’s got an eye for detail and made sure the job was done to perfection. I’ve used many contractors over the years and I almost always have something to complain about in the end. This is not the case with Kevin and his crew. In fact, they SURPASSED my expectations by an enormous margin. I can’t recommend these guys any more highly.

Please know that I highly recommend Freddy Diaz of 3B’s Contracting for residential home improvement work. I hired 3B’s, and specifically Freddy Diaz, to do a complete renovation of a two bed, two bath condo in Glenwood, IL. I live in Minnesota so I needed someone I could trust to do the job without my on-site supervision. I was given a referral to Freddy and contacted him. He met me later that day to estimate the job. A couple weeks later he provided me a complete, detailed proposal. We met one more time at the condo and I signed the contract, gave him a deposit of about half the contract and the keys and returned to Minnesota. In fact, I soon left for about a month out of the country! When I returned to Glenwood about a month later, the job was essentially complete! Again, this was a complete renovation. All the floor coverings were removed and new carpet, vinyl and ceramic tile installed. Old wallpaper was scraped off and walls patched and painted. All new kitchen appliances, sink and quartz counter tops were installed. Cabinets were repainted. All new bathroom fixtures and controls were installed. Light fixtures, electrical outlets and switches were replaced with new. Exterior windows were returned to operational condition. Nothing was left untouched. Freddy encountered some minor issues in my absence which he dealt with while keeping the project within budget and completed on schedule. I received compliments from the building management on how Freddy’s crew cleaned up the hallways and elevator each day they were on the site. In summary, I am extremely pleased with the finished apartment and most satisfied with how easy Freddy made the process. He was sensitive to budget concerns and helped make selections that kept the cost down. He proved to be extremely trustworthy and more than competent. He communicates well and was always responsive to my questions. I could not be happier with the results of the project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
