I had Julio's Services clear a back property line of overgrown brush and debris. They also completed some tree trimming for me as well. They did a great job. Communication was good with Domingo and the crew was prompt and did a great job with clean up. I would recommend Julio's Services to anyone looking for quality work at a very fair price. Thank you, Brad Geneva, IL

I have a fairly large property on the North Shore with several mature trees that needed trimming. JC Lawncare's owner, Jose, gave me a very reasonable bid and told me they could come out right away. I was initially a little reluctant because there were no reviews. (I subsequently learned this company is new to Thumbtack, hence no reviews yet.) Jose came with his crew of 4 and did a GREAT job. They were knowledgeable, hard working, respectful and did the BEST clean up to my yard and alley I've ever had with any previous tree trimmers. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company to others and I intend to hire them again when I have future landscaping and tree trimming needs. Thank you, Jose!

They took down a large dead tree and a few smaller trees. I had contacted him this summer but have them removed for 4 more months. He came back and requoted. Because of the bad weather now, it was a little tricky setting up a date. Ramiro and his crew were really very nice. I would definitely recommend him. I was very pleased with their work. Thank you.

We hired Mauricio originally just to move a play structure that we bought on Craigslist, but when I saw everything else they do, we had them also help us with trimming some bushes and trees, and installing a french drain to fix our sump pump drainage problem. They were professional, knowledgeable, and friendly, and did a great job with everything. They left our yard super cleaned up and looking great, went above and beyond my expectations, and had good prices. They were easy to get a hold of, and respond super quickly to messages.

The crew from Alvarado's were efficient and friendly. They arrived on time, worked diligently and were finished in no time. They checked with me before they removed limbs from our walnut tree to make sure we were still on the same page. They also checked in when they were finished to make sure all was done as planned. The price was very reasonable for a quick and efficient job. I would highly recommend Alvarado's!!

Precision's hard working and well organized crew accomplished our spring cleaning, spade edging of planting beds, spreading new mulch, removing unwanted shrubs and bushes and trimming trees all done within three days. They will return later in the spring to plant some new nursery stock.

They were perfect! They worked around Mike schedule, other than a few bits of sawdust, you never knew they were here. Everything was neat and tidy after they left. I will use them again for more tree trimming in the spring.

These guys are the hardest working landscapers I’ve employed. They know what they’re doing, they don’t rush things and they do a very good job. So far they have completed the Spring cleanup, edges about 1/2 acre of trees and flowerbeds, as well as deliver & install some high quality mulch.

I would give Roberto and his team 10 stars if I could! They went above and beyond helping us through our lawn cleanup, tree/bush removals, and reorganizing the landscaping. He also made quite a few awesome recommendations on how we could make our yard more amazing! Also, he gave a lot of input and guidance which we really appreciated!! We'll definitely be working with Brass again!

Ryan, owner/operator of RC Tree Service, was quick to answer my inquiry, made an appointment with me for an estimate to which he arrived promptly on time. And actually called us if we would mine if he came earlier than we had scheduled, which we quickly accepted. We're avid campers, so we asked Ryan if he could cut the trunk and larger branches into firewood length. Which he did and stacked it too! His clean-up was excellent, couldn't tell he cut down a tree. We were sure to grab extra business cards, cause we'll be handing them out. We would highly recommend RC Tree Service!

Bardos did a huge project for us - we extended our paver patio and also put a 5 foot high, 60 foot long retaining wall at the back of our property. The retaining wall was set ten feet from the existing rail road tie wall- he removed that and then filled the entire 60 foot x 10 foot area with soil to 5 feet high. We have a fence in the back so he moved all the stone and soil by wheelbarrow from the front yard and then through a gate. I am extremely impressed with not only the quality of work, but his professionalism and work ethic. It turned out better than I could have imagined, I am so impressed! You can tell he takes pride in his work and a job well done. He never had a problem with changes or add-ons that we requested (he moved and modified an existing sump pump pipe, cut down a tree, etc). Not only that, he was reasonably priced. I highly recommend him for any landscaping or hardscaping job!

We had the tree fell on our patio. We called the home advisor and they send Ali Tree service. They did the removal of tree and stump grading really cheap. Beats all the estimates. Definitely recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
