I'm a professional translator and recently received a research paper for proofreading. Said the client they had requested the translation elsewhere and that they hadn't liked the result that much. Despite some jumbled up sentences with awkward grammar and choice of words, the text seemed reasonably fine, until I found a more obscure sentence and checked the original paper in Portuguese, only to find that the meanings were completely off. The translation of entire sentences was messed up, as if someone had taken a bag of radicals, prefixes and sufixes and poured it all over a table for later organizing them as they saw fit, with little to no regard to the original text, resulting in a sort of psychdelic jigsaw. Some parts had the exactly opposite meaning, while others said things that just made no sense. The level of mistakes reached absurd, nonsensical, laughable levels. It was something like this: "The findings in the present research paper were based on consecutive runs of three types of experiments performed on alternate days" could well have become "The three alternative research papers presented were found by typing the daily experimental performance." Really, I'd have felt like laughing if only I didn't take my work seriously. Instead, it was more like crying matter. Some parts of the text -- whose style and level of error varied wildly, indicating it was the work of several people -- looked so fishy that I did the ultimate test: Pasted it into Google Translate to compare results. I was not surprised to find out that some of these Google translations quite closely matched the English version I had at hand, with the same mistakes and all, while others had clearly received some cosmetic touches to cover up the most explicit goofs. In one of the strangest/funniest/stupidest mistakes, one of the references in the paper cited an author whose surname is Filho, which promptly became Son, a literal translation of unexplainable reason other than mindlessly relying on machine translation for a what should be professional job. When I sent the paper back to the client and commented on the absurdly poor quality of the translation, he informed me that one of the authors had used the services of Global Edico Services based on the recomendation of a journal. I'd seen this name before and, despite having no reference of the work, assumed it was a serious company. But, by visiting the website and finding Elementary-school-level mistakes throughout, I now see my client should have known better and avoided this shoddy work. I'll make sure to warn whoever I can that this so-called translation GES offers is but a scam with not only poor quality, but outright disrerspect for the clients' research and money.
