The entire experience was phenomenal! Our team was willing to start early and arrived precisely on schedule. We had a tough move that took longer than anticipated, but Calvin, Melvin, and Antonio ( I hope I remembered all the names correctly!) were extremely professional, respectful, patient (during our last minute packing), and SUPER FAST! And the rate fit our budget perfectly. Thank you so much, Rogers!! Can't recommend this organization highly enough!!

I hired extreme movers for my hot tube move, I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of work they provide. They had all the equipment and they knew what they where doing. Movers did a walk through with me to insure the hot tub was in perfect condition both at pick up and drop off. The best park I have to say was the price, it was a flat rate at there was no hidden fees. I would recommend and I now have my go to movers for any of my moves

Movers showed on time and worked extremely hard. They did a great job of packing and everything was safely moved. The rate was good and the $100 flat fee on the truck was very upfront. We were going from the city to the suburbs and they got 30 minutes behind our car. However, other than that small detail... they are awesome. Would highly recommend

Roy and his workers moved a piano from our basement to our first floor. They were prompt, professional, and courteous. Roy even took the time to wrap our piano in a protective covering so its lacquer wasn't damaged in the move. His rate was very reasonable as well. I highly recommend Roy to anyone looking for a professional mover.

I cannot say enough positive things about SafeHands Movers! I have used multiple cross country, and I believe most of the local movers in my area; absolutely NONE of them compare to the level of expertise, professionalism, superior customer service, extreme care w/all of my items, and "can do attitude" that Melvin and the entire team at SafeHands Movers provides. In addition to being very reasonably priced, efficient, offering multiple days/times to accommodate a move, etc., when I was told by Melvin (and the team the day of my move) that I was "not to worry at all or lift a finger to help", THEY MEAN IT!! I was used to jumping in to keep "professional movers" moving in every move I've ever had so that items weren't ruined and I could ensure I didn't have to pay more. SafeHands Movers stuck to the flat rate quote I was given, never even took 5 minutes for a break, were SO pleasant and trustworthy, that I haven't stopped telling everyone I know to utilize this company, and tell everyone they know about the unbelievable quality service I enjoyed. Let's face it - moving is not pleasant in the best of circumstances. SafeHands Movers IS A PLEASURE to have been fortunate enough to find and hire! You will not be disappointed in any way with this company! Absolutely the best - 10 stars for sure!!

We hired Ollie to assemble a bunch of furniture after our move. He was right on time, was very professional and infact also helped me with minor works like hanging the mirror up. He was very easy going and friendly. With a great service, he provided me with am amazing flat rate price quote too. Thank you for being such a great help!

Price was reasonable. King David only charges a one shot travel fee and then the truck/crew rate from door to door. Several other movers wanted to charge full-crew rate from the time they left their own facility until they returned. King David had plenty of protective materials and did a good job prepping what we had not yet packed. There was no damage to either house or to our belongings. Contact and communication was excellent. They were prompt and courteous. Great Job.

These guys are really unprofessional and if I could have given them zero stars I would have given them. I have booked the move with Raj and after seeing the stuff in the house he has agreed for a flat rate. However at the day of move, the 2 guys show up and told that it is not possible to move in the price agreed upon and it will be double what they have estimated. Also they told me Raj is just an office worker and don’t know anything about the move and they don’t rely the estimated given by him. If he doesn’t know anything why do you allow him to visit the customers and estimate. It is really annoying to cancel the move when you have prepared for that.

Moving can be stressful; however, Chicagoland Moving and Storage made my personal experience quick, simple, and easy. They were remarkably professional, fair, and thorough, packing and shifting each item with great care. I highly recommend them for the simplest or most complicated move. You will not be disappointed!

The 2 moving men that showed up were great. They called on their way so we had a hard start time and had little discussion - straight to work. They picked up quickly on the system I wanted to use to move in furniture and were moving ahead of me quickly. They did little extras that were not asked of them which I appreciate. The movers were also extremely polite and took great care not to damage the furniture or the house. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mobile Services Moving Assembly Delivery. Kc

They handled all of or pre-packed boxes and all our furniture with care. We have some exspensive pieces and had a negative experience with a previous move/moving company, so it was refreshing to have a good experience. There was great communication throughout, and did an excellent job fitting everything into our storage unit. The only problem, was we planned to pay by credit card. We were told by the office that was fine a few days in advance, and that there would be a 3% charge, which we were ok with. The head mover told us this was fine when he arrived, then proceeded to have us fill out the paperwork. At the end of the move he then came to us and said he couldn't get ahold of the office and we'd have to pay by cash. He said if we didn't pay by cash we'd have to wait endlessly to hear back from the office. We didn't believe what he was saying, but obliged because we were on a time constraint. We felt a little scammed and are now unsure if we will use them again when we complete the second part of our move this summer. We'd probably require written communication from them, that we will exclusively pay by card and there will not be any other options the day of.

Travis and his team were EXCELLENT. Very responsive to communication before the move. Arrived 15 minutes early the day of the move. Evaluated the situation and began moving immediately. Came with their own materials and professionally wrapped and secured my items. They didn’t take any breaks or waste any time EVEN while moving to my 3rd floor walk up. I WILL be using them again for my next move. A++ service.

They did a good job with cleaning my dryer vents and were fast- probably about 20 min tops! They were also considerate of our home and took off shoes to walk on carpet to get to my dryer! Both were professional and respectful and exactly did I wanted for the job. They also cleaned up after their work and put things back the way they were. I would hire them again!

They showed up on time (early, actually) and were very thorough and helpful with everything I needed. The rates are probably some of the lowest in Chicago. My only advice is when you are given a quote for 2-3 hours, unless you are moving VERY close and have almost no belongings, definitely expect it to go an extra hour.

The only reason I’m rating 4 stars is because I had to wait an hour for them to arrive. But once they did, they were quick, efficient, and so nice! They even put my bed frame together for me. And their prices were fair for the amount of work they did. Overall, I’d recommend and would hire them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
