We had multiple leaks in our clay tile roof causing ceiling damage in three bedrooms our attic wall full of buckets and kiddie pools. They came out and did what they said. After mutiple down pours hit Chicago where roofs came off of homes we as of today are leak free and could not be happier. Below in pics is the repairs, with now dry buckets just to give you an idea of how many leaks we had, also included an after shot of our dry attic. Thank you.

As an architect, I was looking for the right person to help me with my complete re-roofing project in Naperville and after talking to over 8 contractors I had selected Joe of Fox Restoration because I trusted him and knew that he would do it right and fix any concerns that I may have...bottom line I was right, the project was perfect and he did take action when it came to my input and concerns...he not also showed up everyday to supervise his team but at the end of each day, after his crew left the job site, he even went as far as to do extra cleanup work to make sure the property looked orderly and was safe of any debris and nails on the ground. I would without any hesitation recommend Fox Restoration for any existing or new roofing project...[Thanks so much Joe, you were indeed a true professional who is detailed oriented like myself!] All the best, Alex

I hired Claudio to tile my backsplash in my kitchen. He quoted me a very fair price, showed up on time despite a snow storm and did an excellent job! He was cheerful and pleasant throughout the whole process and cleaned up everything leaving the kitchen the same as when he arrived (except nicer with the new tile)! I plan on using Claudio for other projects in my house and am happy to have found a handyman that not only follows up but shows up and does a great job.

Jake is not only a warm, friendly guy but his business partner Jeremy is equally great. They are both dedicated, use time wisely, add great architectural taste and ideas in a project, and work very hard. Work was done on time, within budget totally, and a few extras were added as a bonus that we had not thought of. They are great workers and designers and just all together great guys. I cannot recommend this company enough. I know you will be delighted with their work. They mostly do the work themselves with subcontractors where needed, such as cement work or electrical, but they are master carpenters themselves with a great view of a project and how to make it the very best for you. Thank you so much, Jake and Jeremy.

From start to finish, Alex was a pleasure to work with. I was able to get the estimate and work completed within 24 hours! Alex thoroughly inspected the roof, gave specific details on what needed to be done, and stuck to the price he quoted. I will definitely have him back in the spring...while he is here for further maintenance on the roof, he offered to help replace an attic fan that has been a problem for years. Alex's knowledge with clay tile roofing was evident, which isn't always easy to find. He takes pride in his family business and the work that they do...I would happily recommend All American Maintenance.

I could not be happier with the quality of work that Nick did in my home. I deal with a lot of contractors. From flooring to bathrooms to exterior contractors. Nick was by far one of the best contractors I've ever worked with. His work is outstanding. He was always on time. He finished the work exactly when he said he would. His price was great. It truly is hard to find someone to do good work and do it the way they say they will. Nick is one of those rare people that know what he's doing, does it well, and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg to do so. Quality meets affordability. I highly recommend Nick for your next project

David and his team did a great job. They were timely, professional and friendly. We felt the the price quoted was fair and worth every penny. We have a large shed that was loosing shingles. We were hesitant in calling anyone because it was a small job. By that I mean not a complete re-roof just replacing an area of tiles. It looks so good I wish I had contacted him earlier! We have more work to be done on the shed and will be calling on him in the near future for that. Please feel to contact me for further information

We had to have some work done in our basement. Flooring, bathroom remodel and some electrical. Super 3 Handyman was very professional, on time and actually showed up. WE called 2 other contractors and none of them showed up on time. We try to get 3 quotes to see which one is the best. We were able to compare and realize that Super 3 was the cheapest. He was so friendly, good with our dog and made sure he cleaned up after himself every day that he worked at our house. The custom tile work is amazing. He is quick, efficient and reliable. I trust him, and I will have him back for our next big project.. Thank you Super 3 Handyman! :)

Over the years I have worked with various contractors and Norm Carver is by far the best one I have come across. Norm worked on my mother-in-law's house which had been neglected for over 40+ years. There was extensive electric, plumbing, carpentry, and drywall work that was required and Norm was able to complete each task. Three bathrooms had to be torn down to the studs due to water damage and mold.....Norm remodeled each bathroom selecting all fixtures/ tile/colors, and the results were great. Norm's quality of work was excellent and he was very good at keeping me informed on potential problem areas that needed to be addressed and how long the various tasks would take. I would recommend him for any remodel or home improvement work.

The job was in my home, on the first and second floors and the back screened-in porch. Diane worked with the colors in my carpets as the basis for wallpaper, paint, draperies, upholstery, slipcovers and accent pieces, which she then selected and had installed. She supervised the re-finishing and modernizing of the kitchen cabinets, helped choose and supervised installation of ceramic tile in the kitchen, back hallway and powder room. She designed and had constructed window treatments in all rooms and shower curtains in bathrooms. She advised on and had installed carpeting on the stairs and second floor. She advised on placement of my accessories and collections, and shopped for items to complete these. Diane was always on top of the job! She got things done promptly and correctly and in a timely fashion. She was always on time and saw to it that work was completed on time and with quality workmanship. Diane has also helped me with exterior work, helping to choose the best roofing materials for my home and securing the services of a contractor who did quality work. Diane is an extremely gifted interior designer, conscientious and easy to work with. She has my highest recommendation!

Steve was very responsive, and easy to work with. That being said, the first time a crew came out, they did bad work, which meant they needed to come back a second time. Steve apologized, said that the workmen were backlogged with too many jobs, and that he would send out someone to fix it the next day. He did this. I feel the job was a B, thus the 4 stars. The work was attaching a clay tile to a front decorative awning, and wrapping some wood with aluminum. In the pic, on the left side, you can see the crisp work. On the right, which I didn't take a great pic of, the work was rounded. It should all have been right angles. The aluminum work along the front is a little wavy, which doesn't come across in the picture, so is really not that bad, and not as crisp as I would have liked. I would hire them again, but I wish the work was a little cleaner. The price was very affordable, and they were easy to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
