Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.

Elif is a very effective teacher. I had never taken a piano lesson before, even though I had played French horn in high school I thought it would be really difficult for me as an adult to learn how to play piano, with my inexperience using both hands and with bass clef music reading. But after only a few months I am amazed by how fast I am learning and how much I can play now under Elif's instruction. She is so pleasant and easy to work with. I would highly recommend her.

My two girls enjoyed every single thing they did at Stacey De: Piano, voice, acting and guitar. They made friends, learned confidence, became a part of a family and mostly, have taken all these lessons with them to college. We will always consider Stacey De as part of our family!

Michele is wonderful in all aspects of her service. She is extremely patient and encouraging. She truly knows her craft and this is very easy to see when you are with her. She has a balanced approach to learning how to not only use your voice but your ears as well. It's been a pleasure working with her. I would recommend Michele to anyone that is interested in vocal lessons.

I have been taking lessons from Dan for more than two and a half years and it something I look forward to every week. Aside from being a great teacher, he is fun, understanding and very talented. He takes the time to help you understand the structure of what you are learning without over burdening you with theory. He is also really interested in making sure you are enjoying playing (that is the point) and getting out of it exactly what you want. Any time I have a request (no matter how absurd) of a song to learn, Dan takes the time to find a good arrangement at my level and teaches it to me. It is really nice having that flexibility and personal investment in my lessons. In just two and a half years, I went from playing no to guitar to be comfortable jamming with my friends while also developing my classical guitar playing skills. His musical interests are vast; from beautiful classical pieces to classic rock solos to movie soundtracks (he loves Storybook Love from the Princess Bride). This blend of genres and talents truly sets Dan a part and I would encourage anyone looking to finally learn the guitar to sign up for lessons with Dan.

Our 4 kids have taken lessons from David over the past 11 years and he has brought out the unique talent in each of them. His style of teaching was great for our family. All 4 of our kids could have their lesson at the same time, while each lesson was individualized because of the use of headphones. David has been so easy to work with through the years, with our varying schedules due to school sports and other activities. He has been very flexible in helping us find time to make up lessons that we missed due to schedule conflicts and he has such a positive and uplifting approach. Our house has been filled with such a variety of music, rather than the standard lesson book songs. We highly recommend David as a piano teacher as well as a nice person to know!

Aaron is a gifted teacher and musician. He teaches people of all ages. I started working with him, and already see immense improvement. He tailored my lessons based on my goals and current struggles vs skills. He also worked with my nephew, and I sat through the first session. (My nephew is shy lol). Totally different lesson plan, and worked very well with him. He taught in such a way that my nephew could pick up on it and improve right in the lesson! Aaron is very encouraging, patient, and effective. A hidden gem in the Dekalb County area. I highly recommend him no matter where you're at, or what your age is. I've had a few music teachers, and this guy teaches to make you succeed. His hopes seem to be success above his skills (which might be impossible. He's brilliant and very gifted both in his musicianship and his teaching skills.)

I contacted Jerry, inquiring about in-home guitar lessons for my daughter. He replied immediately with helpful suggestions of an instructor. When I realized my daughter wanted a female instructor Jerry went out of his way to find out more about my daughter and the kind of instructor who would be compatible with her. He then suggested one of two female instructors he felt would meet her needs. I was impressed with the time and effort he put into helping me find an instructor for her. This was extraordinary that he would take the time to help me when it did not directly benefit him and he did not even know me! I had originally contacted Jerry because of his highly regarded reputation for teaching and instruction. But now I also hold him in high regard for his kindness and dedication to helping others find their way into the world of music.

I´ve only been working with Cristobal for a short time due to my work schedule, but I´m very comfortable now with speaking and reading Spanish. I really like his approach to teaching the language and his passion for it. He also has group meet ups so that you can enjoy speaking with others on your proficiency level and continue gaining confidence in your speaking ability.

I first took vocal lessons with Jill back in 1994. Fast forward to 2017 when I again needed a vocal coach, and I knew I had to seek her out, and was lucky to find her again. She's got amazing intuition, she instantly knows what you need in order to improve and succinctly gives you the tools and the confidence to achieve those improvements. Despite what many believe, anyone with the right training can sing, and sing well. You need the right vocal coach. You need Jill Gabrielle.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
