Introduction: At the Joy of Music piano studio, I create a unique environment for a positive, safe, and challenging music experience. A combination of weekly private lessons and occasional group classes accomplishes this by prioritizing not only note reading, but also improvisation, composition, and learning to play with other musicians. Destiney is an incredible teacher, a wonderful pianist, and an absolutely lovely person. She is compassionate, patient, energetic and just amazing with children. My daughter was 4 years old when she started lessons. I recall an incident when she started working on a new recital piece that was a bit more challenging for her. Following her lessons, I asked her to play it for me and she struggled with a particular measure in the piece. I tried different methods with her: one hand only, count out loud, play really slowly, copy my fingers. But whining turned into tears, and tears quickly turned into a complete physical meltdown. Destiney happened to return for my son's lesson within minutes of the meltdown and my daughter was still emotionally tuned out at this time. But within 10 minutes, Destiney not only got her to play the section perfectly, she brought back my daughter's calm self, her confidence, and her smile. We have seen her bring out the best in all of three of our children.

Both of my children started piano with Destiney Kooiman and she not only ignited their passion for music but challenged them in ways they found fun. She is the most compassionate, dedicated and kind woman we have ever known and she became my children's teacher, mentor, confidante and friend. Their musical achievements under her tutelage were remarkable but even more than that she taught my kids the importance of giving back to the community.

We’ve only had one lesson so far, but Destiney was excellent with my 5 year old and easy to communicate with from the start. Best of all, her passion really shows and makes a lesson with her that much more fun and valuable.

$25/half hour weekly lessons, $35/45 minute lessons
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a free first lesson, to give you a chance to get to know me and my teaching style. It also gives me a chance to get to know the student as well as the parent, because I work closely with the parents.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Wheaton College with a Bachelors of Music, Emphasis in Piano Pedagogy, in May of 2014. In July of 2014, I received training and became a certified Musikgarten instructor. Musikgarten focuses on early childhood development through fun, nurturing, and challenging music education.
