William Lythberg says, "Ok...I'll admit that taking dance lessons was NEVER on my radar of things to do things with my wife. Even though she has wanted to do so for the last 40 years! But, we were attending a wedding 2 years ago and she wanted to make sure I didn't embarrass her. At least that is what I imagine crossed her mind. The wedding has long passed and we continue to take lessons every week. One day a week, my wife dances with Nick and I dance with Paulina (so she can teach me to lead the dances) Then at the end of the week, my wife and I have a lesson together under Nick's watchful eye to see how much I learned from Paulina's teaching of me...Paulina has patiently shown me how to 'lead' a lot of the Smooth dances like Tango, Salsa, Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha and even Bachata. I have to admit that I truly enjoy the experience and the routines we have learned. We look forward to more years of dancing and enjoying the opportunity to do something fun together!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
