Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.

Not just an accomplished guitarist but an actual teacher. Very adaptive but actually has a sense of scope and sequence to his instruction which, in my experience, is tough to find in a guitar teacher outside of college level instruction. Can really teach authentic rock, blues, and jazz styles.

More than just a teacher. I took guitar lessons with Paul for eight years. He helped me realize my natural ear for music, and allowed me to figure out what I wanted to learn. Our lessons were always different. Sometimes I would bring in songs that I wanted to learn, and sometimes he would have things he thought I should know how to play, which helped me learn similar songs later on. When I was applying to college and needed to learn how to read music and play jazz guitar, he tailored all of our lessons so that I could learn those techniques quickly and most importantly, efficiently. Paul's personality transcends the teacher-student relationship, which allowed he and I to become very good friends. Paul William is an excellent teacher for whatever you need to learn. You can't go wrong taking lessons from him.

Do not have enough words to express how great the Band Sundance was for our wedding. Their ease of communication beforehand put both of us at ease that we would not have to worry about this vendor. The bands choice of songs kept everyone of all age groups on the dance floor. We received numerous compliments of the band. Whether it was when they were playing, or when they catered to other music the crowd liked when they were on break. Their professionalism, talent, and love of getting people out on the dance floor is second to none. I wish we could have had more time with the Band Sundance, and would recommend them to anyone looking to have a live band. Whether it was 70s-90s music or country music, the Band Sundace put on an amazing show. Also the fact they took candid photos while playing was something that went above and beyond what you woould expect of a band. Again, there are not enough words to express how great they were at our wedding.

Kathryn was exactly what I envisioned when I set out to find a jazz singer for my father in law's birthday party. Her voice is seriously gorgeous and she was very easy to work with. She was flexible with me throughout our time planning the gig and was able to accommodate all of my requests. While her song list is quite vast, there were a few special tunes she specifically learned for this event and they sounded fabulous. She found the perfect accompaniment in a very talented guitar player as well. Throughout the time Kathryn performed and for hours afterwards I received compliments from other guests for finding such a talented duo. The men and women alike were very impressed with the quality of music, song selections, appearance, and demeanor of both musicians. Everyone thought the music really added something special to the party. Most importantly, my father in law was absolutely amazed with what wound up being the perfect gift for him. He was very impressed and I was so happy to see his face when Kathryn sang one of the songs she especially learned for us. He'll never forget it. I'd hire Kathryn again in a heartbeat.

Artist collective is a very professional business that has the musician in their best interest. I personally have worked with them and it was so nice to have them take care of the "business" end, so I could concentrate on the creative end with my band. AC set us up with a photo/video shoot and it was a success! Highly recommended by us!!

Nick and his mate, Sam showed up on time....ready to work and continued to play three sets during a three hour period. This is my first time hiring a band for my personal party and I could not have worked with a better pair. I will definitely use him again. Well worth the money. Nice guys and open to my inexperienced suggestions. Lol! And I haven't even mention the quality of their music (jazz) was outstanding. They were the hit and highlight of the party.

Olivia and Jeremy were amazing to work with! Their planning and preparation helped us relax and enjoy our wedding events with family and friends. We loved how organized they were and how they thought of every little detail, to help our day run smoothly. They were professional in all aspects of communication and we loved how they reached out to our wedding venue, band, and singers, prior to wedding day. The day of our wedding they were very attentive and jumped in when needed to help ease transitions. They were are go to couple! We received many compliments about the music from guests and loved that they were able to offer lots of different options to help meet all our unique needs. Everyone enjoyed the music from my grandmother to our young nieces! Our day would have gone awry without them. We would not hesitate to book Jeremy and Olivia for future events and would highly recommend utilizing their services!

The EcoLimes are great musicians. They have a fun sound with lots of interesting mash-ups of popular songs. They were easy to book, showed up on time and took care of their own set-up and tear-down. They took longer breaks than agreed upon.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of playing in multiple bands with Joshua. His music theory based vocabulary is always cerebral. But instead of coming across as "speaking over one's head" it actually helps you to connect the dots! He can speak and teach like a college professor, or at an easier to grasp level... say, 3rd grade. Being around him, I've learned many important music theory items by osmosis. Such as knowing my G## from my A, and the difference in the notes between a Bb Ionian mode and an F Mixolydian!

Steve is a great guy and a wonderful musician. Steve graduated the year before I started high school. He came back to help the saxophone section learn music for marching band and along the way, gave many valuable pointers to help us all know our instruments better and grow as young musicians. Almost 20 years later and I still regard him as an inspiration to my musical endeavors.

The Ron Harris Music Group was terrific! Ron will create a wonderful evening of background music perfect for a party when you want your guests to socialize. Ron took care of all the details including coming out to our venue ahead of time and checking the space out! Ron and his keyboardist played pop music, jazz, oldies-a wonderful range. He also chose the right volume for the party space. The Ron Harris group are excellent musicians and really nice guys. I recommend them wholeheartedly!

Dear Mike and Dave, Thank you both so much for a wonderful evening of entertainment. As the event planner for our company it is always hard to know what type of entertainment will work with our large and diverse group…needless to say you guys knocked it out of the park. First with the Jazz music during our social and dinner, then with the dueling pianos after dinner. I love how you worked the crowd and got everyone involved…the best was the little “cow bell” competition you started between both of our presidents! It is always a good time when you can see top executives of a company let loose and have fun. :) Everyone had such a blast, I will definitely keep you guys at the top of my list for next time.

      About

The Big Eagle Band was established in Chicago, IL, in January 2008. Covering a range of jukebox favorites from the 1970’s to present day, The Big Eagle Band sets its sights on recreating what is in your establishment’s jukebox, live on stage. The Big Eagle Band features John Beniacs on bass and vocals, Matt Stone on guitar and vocals, Mark Sibincic on drums and Phil Valenti on guitar. All members are in their early 30's, jamming the music everyone loves. John, Matt, Mark and Phil have a long sordid history of playing in original bands dating back to the mid-90’s (most recently Mark and John in Government Warning and Matt and Phil in Killie McGee and Point 08). While styles and genres fade in and out, hits remain, and this idea brought the four members of The Big Eagle Band together. With everyone’s prior experience, it was a matter of weeks before the band was armed and ready to bring its show to the masses. The Big Eagle Band’s performance is guaranteed to electrify and stimulate any crowd with their diverse catalog of jukebox favorites and humorous banter — the perfect ingredients that make any show not just fun, but a blast! The Big Eagle Band is professional and is available for booking not only for bar gigs, but also for corporate events, festivals and public or private parties. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
