Sandy has done a terrific job. She is an excellent writer, but, more than that, she takes the time to figure out exactly what your goals are, and then tailors her writing to be in line with those goals. She is also prompt, dependable, and charges extremely reasonable fees. I highly recommend Sandy for your writing needs!

The resume Mr. Troemner provided is excellent and very professional. But, what really impressed me the most, was his in depth knowledge of the whole hiring/interviewing process. He coached me on exactly what types of questions I would be asked and how I should answer them. His face to face style of consulting worked very well for me. Certainly a top notch resume writer, but an even better job interview coach!

I’ve known Karin McKie since 1997, and she’s passionate and reliable in everything she does, as a publicist, marketer and arts administrator, an actor, writer and educator. I worked with her at Stage Left Theatre where her leadership and creative problem solving facilitated successful productions and effective community outreach. She’s flexible, invested and creative with every project, and I would wholeheartedly recommend working with her and taking advantage of her many skills and experiences.

My sincerest gratitude to Tammy for enriching me by guiding me to find my deepest talents; for inspiring me by quoting insights on how to be a great writer from a variety of astute sources; for encouraging me with her kindness and understanding of the big picture and my personal ones. If there was a letter grade better than an A++, I would give her that esteem.

Mike has done a great job editing my work in the past. He has a very critical eye and is good at spotting inconsistencies and making work more concise. My writing was definitely much improved after receiving Mike's input. Having reviewed some of his own work as well, I know that Mike is also a clear, clever, and insightful writer.

Marissa worked with me to fine-tune a cover letter draft, and tailor it to multiple job applications. Her edits were thoughtful and really took my writing to the next level. Her writing expertise and creative approach helped me finalize a cover letter that stood out, and I ended up with two job offers!

Becky is a passionate and creative writer. She has the ability to craft your message in an appealing and sophisticated fashion. But equally important, she will help to take your idea from your brain to paper more articulately than you even intended. Her targeted questions that she will ask you in helping to extract your goal is the real payoff. Worth every last penny!

I contracted Jack out to do copywriting for my website along with drafting business proposals for some of my prospective clients. He has a strong grasp of language and prose, which has helped me appear both knowledgable and professional in the eyes of clients. As far as creativity and insight, he is the best writer I’ve worked with on any such projects. I would highly recommend him for this sort of thing!

I had a pleasure to meet with Rakhi few years back to hear a motivation speech on her upcoming book. I have never met her before and she welcomed me with such a warmth. She delivered her speech with the utmost professionalism, courage, and charisma. She was very motivating to all of us in the room and the viewpoints she shared. I wish her all the very best in her new career. Kinjal-

I’m very pleased to recommend Liz Richards as a ghost writer for your project. You will find that she is not only a talented writer but also a hard worker and highly ethical. Liz is an experienced writer who knows grammar inside and out. It is, however, her ability to work together that would set her apart for your project. In my experience, not all good writers are good collaborators. While working together, I discovered that she was especially skilled at listening to my ideas and asking pertinent questions before encapsulating my thoughts into concise, readable text. It sometimes felt like she could see inside my head and put it down on paper. I was also impressed by her stamina. If a draft was needed quickly, she put in the extra hours to be sure it was done correctly and on time. She offered thoughtful suggestions for changes without making me feel obligated to accept. Sometimes her suggestions prompted a conversation that uncovered ideas that neither one of us had previously thought of. All of this made her extremely easy to work with. Finally, ethics are critical because writing is a very personal endeavor. To be frank, you need to be able to trust the person you are working with to help communicate your ideas without without sharing them elsewhere. You can trust Liz Richards. She has a deep faith and a strong moral compass. I think she’s great and look forward to working together with her again in the future.

I’m writing this letter to recommend Sarah Dorfman for your current employment opportunities. When I was the Marketing Manager at The Wharf Marketplace in Monterey, California, I hired Sarah to write for the website, menus, and marketing materials. She is an excellent writer and detailed editor; a combination I was having trouble finding. After working with Sarah on those projects I realized her skills in other areas that I was becoming too busy to handle. She set our social media in motion and was not only successful at growing our likes and followers, but she was great at starting conversations and getting people to interact with our brand. At the time The Wharf Marketplace was a new business and Sarah had a major role in helping us stay on brand, gain loyal customers, earn the respect of fellow business partners. Sarah was very valuable to me, and I’m confident you would have the same results. Sincerely, Carrie Crook Former Marketing Manager for The Wharf Marketplace, Monterey, California. 2013-2015

I value her insights and have increased my writing productivity as a result. As a columnist, she delivers extremely clean, engaging copy with sharp, clearly focused articles.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
