Absolutely amazing! Lee is a very knowledgeable dog trainer with truly outstanding results. If you are looking for a dog trainer I have no doubts that Lee can give you incredible results. I was fortunate enough to run across Lee and in the short time Lee has been working with my dog Emmy, she has made a remarkable turnaround. Before we started training with Lee my dog was one of those out of control, hard to handle situations. You name the behavior my Emmy displayed it. Let me tell you I didn't have much hope. The dog that use to bolt out the door at any chance she had, taking down anyone in her path, will now sit and stay by the door as I go in and out. She can be left alone without the fear of her chewing everything in her path. Walks are no longer a struggle but a time that's enjoyable for both of us. The freedom that comes with having a well behaved dog is incredible. Lee has given us the opportunity to enjoy Emmy.

We received our quote very quickly, and Marianna was great with our dog, Bentley! She was always on time and took Bentley's behavior into consideration on what would be the best approach to train him. We had a great time ourselves, and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high-quality, cost-effective dog training program!

Off Leash K9 is the best dog training in the Indy area, hands down! My wife and I have been through 4 different trainers to help us with our stubborn Boxer and we were not able to make any progress. After seeing Off Leash K9's videos on youtube we decided to give them a try. We did the 2 week board and train program and we cannot be happier!!! Our Boxer is now fully obedient and is able to enjoy life off-leash! We highly recommend Off Leash K9 Training!

Katherine walked my dog, Willie, one day when I was unable to. She was punctual and professional, yet friendly and easy to talk with. Katherine appears to be very knowledgeable about dogs and dog behavior, and she interacted quite well with Willie. Katherine walked Willie for a good hour, and while walking, provided him with water. I would readily hire her again without reservation.

Robbie has been to our home twice and our doxies just love her! She is professional and always on time. She has a wonderful presence about her that exudes cool, calm, and collected. Her positive reinforcement style of training produces results quickly! We have more work to do, but getting the basics down has been quick and effective. Our dogs seem more calm, happier, and more confident thanks to Robbie's training. Additionally, Scott and I feel that we have regained control of the home and we also feel more calm and confident in our ability to be great dog owners

When Dawn showed up for my first appointment my dog literally came across the table at her. That was August of 2014. After that we determined that it was best that Jake meet Dawn outside so our lessons were based on our individual needs and requirements from the very first day. From there when Dawn would visit she would always have a new tip or something she found on the internet, etc to share. I saw such improvements in Jake he gradually became more calm and knew his place in my family thanks to Dawn's training. I enjoyed my sessions and took something away from each one. Our last meeting was April of 2015 when it was determined that Jake had passed all of his tests, he's like a different dog now. I would definitely recommend Dawn to anyone looking for a dog trainer! :-)

      About

This is a family run business which I believe makes it more personable. I put my heart and soul into my work. The thing that all of my clients point out is how their pets seem so much more relaxed upon first meeting. "Wow! They never act that way with strangers! They usually bark like crazy or go hide." It took me awhile to figure out what that was because I had no idea why it's always been that way. I now know it's my real compassion, relaxed energy, and empathy. It all comes naturally. And as my business continues grow, I will only look for people with the same natural gifts to join my team.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
