"After seeing several massage therapists over the past 3yrs I’m finally happy to say I’ve found someone to help my body to feel normal again. Erik Owen has literally been a lifesaver for me. I’ve had back problems for years and never thought I would feel normal again. I went to see Erik and he’s been the absolute best!!! This is as close to normal as I can remember feeling and I owe that to Erik and his bodywork. He explains throughly what he’s going to do and I appreciate the knowledge he shared with me. I will continue to see him because quite frankly...it’s the best I’ve felt in years."

"I started off late due to traffic, I never am late to massage. Kelley understood rush hour though and it was ok. She spent time talking to me about what issues I have going on. She explained some ideas she had to help. On the table (I requested deep tissue and trigger point therapy) she would explain what she was doing and I very much wanted her to tell me. She said some want her to not talk, I just preferred she talk about what she's doing. I noticed a difference, how much better I felt and the massage was what I needed. I have been to many massages in the past so I have know what I would like. Kelley was the massage therapist I was trying to find and of course she knows I'll be back. Because she knows that her massage does what it's suppose to do!"

"All around great experience. I asked prior to meeting for a specific type of massage as I had recently gotten plastic surgery work done on my body. And she accommodated me. Felt completely at ease and reasonable price. I am giving her a call in a couple more days for another massage"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
