We hired Paul to remove a ceiling fan in our mater bedroom and install a chandelier. He was very prompt following my initial request via Thumbtack and worked with me to find a convenient time to complete the project. He was timely, efficient, and a very pleasant individual to work with. I am beginning a bathroom remodel and will need some assistance with modifying the current electrical work. Based on my previous experience with Paul, I plan to have him also complete this job. I highly recommend Paul Wright for residential electrical work.

I hired K&S to help me with part of a bathroom remodel. They showed up on time, were neat and productive. Had a small call back, but they came back and tackled it no questions asked. It's hard pressed to find quality help, that's dependable and cares.

Our experience with John of JD Home Repair and Remodel was FANTASTIC! He gave me a fair price, was at my home when he said he would be and did a GREAT job. My new kitchen back splash looks great. I intend to use him again for my home remodeling projects. Thanks John for a job well done. I really appreciate it.

B & A Home Remodeling removed and installed a new ceramic floor in my kitchen. James was very professional and honest when discussing options and quotes. He was on-time when installing the floor and his quote was accurate. The cost was very reasonable. He also did a fantastic job installing the floor. Overall I had a great experience with James and would recommend his services.

Sean provided finish carpentry work, the installation of cabinetry and some appliance installation. He gave accurate estimates, supplied the materials that he committed to providing, followed instructions on woodwork detailing adding advice where needed, showed up on time, communicated changes in schedule, and completed the work with expertise. He is courteous and behaved in an honest manner. And he's a really nice man.

Zack put up privacy panels topped with a very nice arbor top to block our view of our neighbor's yard. He has great skill with woodworking projects! He also helped us create a large patio/fire pit area with "rocks" (to cover a large, shaded area with huge tree roots and issue with mud from a large dog) and did all of the work himself. He is creative, is very good with design, attentive to detail and can do almost anything you need.

Stacy has been a huge help with my mostly do-it-yourself full home remodel project. I initially hired him for some demo work, but he did such a great job, and was so knowledgeable about all the various aspects of the remodel, that he ended up staying several extra days and working on other skilled parts of the project. He's been very flexible on schedule, has been willing to jump into whatever I asked him to do, and has been incredibly hard-working. I'm not done with the remodel yet, and I have a feeling I'll be calling Stacy for a lot of help over the next couple months. Thank you Stacy.

Travis did an outstanding job for us. He and his crew are punctual and professional. The job was done quickly and sooner than expected. I was so impressed with Travis that I hired him to do a major remodel of our home and to add an addition to it as well. . We can't express how pleased we have been with Travis and his team. Top quality work. Professional Service. Fair Price. My wife and I are very satisfied with Monroe Builders and will use them again in the future. Issac Blazek was recommended to me and provided references and pics of his work. He did a great job, worked well with design and was always polite. He is honest and I did not feel as though I needed to stand over him to make sure he did things as requested. He removed and rebuilt my entire shower. He created just what I wanted. Later, with the onset of the super cold Indiana winter there was a problem and he fixed it without complaint. I would recommend him for all of your remodel needs. If I were to have another large project come up, I would call Issac again.

We originally contacted Jason for cabinetry work in our kitchen, but in the end hired him to remodel our fireplace and built-in desk area. His attention to detail was superb and we appreciated his patience during the design decision process. Jason was always professional, and communicated with us often during what ended up being a 10 week project involving 2 subcontractors. Its obvious that Jason cares about his work.

It is with great pleasure that we share our experience in working with Mindy Sly. Mindy has an exceptional talent for interior design and is passionate and extremely knowledgeable about her work. Our relationship began this winter when my husband and I wanted a fresh, updated look on the inside of our home. Our family had spent over 10 years living with different shades of tan walls and complementing carpeting. We wanted to incorporate shades of gray, white, turquoise and yellow but were neither knowledgeable about color and design nor had the time to take on such a big task alone. Knowing that if we changed the walls and carpeting, we would also want to update our furniture and décor to complement the overall look we were trying to achieve. At our consultation we shared with her our vision, style, likes and dislikes as well as our budget and timeline. Mindy listened to our needs and wants and made suggestions for paint colors, carpeting, furniture and décor. What we enjoyed so much about working with Mindy was that she encouraged us to take an active role in the decorating process. She didn’t push her agenda on us and, in fact, welcomed our input and opinions on various aspects of our redesign. With her natural talent and eye for detail, Mindy has transformed our home beautifully and has made it come to life with vibrant colors, patterns and textures! From the custom made furniture and the use of drapery to the eye catching paint and décor, we are in love! We have found her work to be inclusive, comprehensive and creative. She is accomplished with color and savvy with its usage throughout our home. Mindy strives to satisfy and deliver high quality results without the large price tag. We love showing off our redesign to family and friends and enjoy coming home to what seems like a vacation getaway! We look forward to using Mindy for any and all additional needs we may have in the future. It is with great pleasure that we highly recommend Mindy of Urban Sly for all interior design needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
