Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: Having spent time competing in fitness-related arenas, working in various types of clubs, and with many different people, I have come to the conclusion that I still have much to learn! However, it has enabled me to relate to both the serious athlete and recreational gym member. It has also allowed me to implement things like kickboxing into someone's workout routine and that adds an exciting element to the mix. Because fitness is important to me on a personal level, I am always curious as how to apply knowledge and some creative latitude. I also realize that what people are truly purchasing is, after all, an experience. I want everyone I work with, whether short term or long term, to walk away having enjoyed their overall experience. What I like most about my job is seeing the successful application of sound principles and practice. While not everyone displays their potential level of discipline and commitment, the ones that do can really walk away with a life that is permanently changed.

"When a friend referred me to Ben I was hesitant at first; I had tried for 7 years to help my boyfriend become a healthier version of himself but wasn’t as successful as we had hoped. We had tried counting calories, reading labels, making healthier eating choices, we used work out videos, we made charts and kept journals, we went to the gym together, and I even made him a motivational binder to organize recipes and workouts but no matter what I tried he kept going back to old habits quickly after starting anything new. Although getting a personal trainer had always been in the back of my mind, it had finally gotten to the point where we decided to give it a try. Ben was very professional and knowledgeable from the moment I made the first inquiry call. He kept my boyfriend accountable for his own actions and more motivated than I’ve seen him in all of the years we’ve been working toward a healthier lifestyle. I’m very happy with the working relationship he had/has with my boyfriend and I am thankful I made the initial call. We’re planning on working together to do an obstacle course race like the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder in the future as continued training goals. The way I see it, Ben helped give my significant other a sense of pride in his ability to work out instead of embarrassment or anxiety that 'it wasn’t going to work'... Thanks Ben."

" I was extremely intimidated by the whole "gym" idea. I knew nothing about how to work the machines, let alone what exercises to do (how often and how many), etc. This kept me out of the gym for years. After finally getting enough courage to go in and actually start a membership, I knew right away that the ONLY way I would actually get use out of the membership would be if I was seeing a trainer. I needed a reason to force myself to go every day. In my time training with Ben, I have become a lot more comfortable with the gym environment, as well as with myself. I am beginning to feel good about myself which is definitely a first in my life. I feel comfortable knowing that when I come in, he has taken the time to plan a workout that is best for me, as well as being there to make sure that I am doing everything correctly. Achieving the best possible results makes everything worth it. If I was working out alone, there would be a lot of stuff I never try, not knowing what to do or not to do. Ben is always available when I have questions about something or when I am wondering why I am doing something a specific way. He always pushes me, usually way harder than I would push myself (Obviously it must work because I am still going and that last rep didn't kill me). He is actually interested in his clients reaching their goals. When he is working with you, he is 100% focused on what you are doing. If I were entering the gym on my own, I would never have worked on my arms because I only wanted to work on my stomach. Ironically, my arms are what I get the most compliments about now. I have learned that you can't focus on just one part of your body and progress evenly. I consider myself lucky to go through this experience. I have seen many people who went through negative experiences with trainers. They never come back to the gym. For me, training has only been beneficial. I am glad to have had my experience with a great trainer." - Bonnie

I worked with Ben on the buddy system for two months. Upon my last doctors appointment, I weighed 188lbs. At the end of the first week with Ben I went down 3lbs, and after two weeks I had lost 10lbs. It's not easy but he will have you do the exercises correctly, and not hesitate to stop you and modify your position, explaining what you're working. He's always ready to explain any and everything that's presented to him about exercise and diet. He is very informative. I'm really on the right track, thanks to Ben.

My husband and I recently moved to Crown Point and decided to forego a gym membership to workout at home. Workouts were mundane and not too productive so we decided to search for a personal trainer. We came across Ben's website and decided to give him a try. After meeting with him to discuss our ages (51 and 48), past injuries, and fitness goals, we began training in February. We train with Ben at our home 2 days a week, and he leaves a 3rd workout for us to do on our own. We have been impressed with Ben's knowledge, attention to detail, work ethic, and the creativity of his workouts. We look forward to the sessions which are challenging and well thought out. Ben teaches proper technique, adapts the exercises to help with past injuries, and monitors our form during each set. We have worked out at gyms for many years with varying results, but Ben has taught us a much more effective way to train. With Ben's help, we reached our initial fitness goals and continue to improve our strength, fitness, and energy levels. Most importantly, the positive experience and solid results have motivated us to stay committed to health and fitness. Thanks Ben!!

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Most of the individuals I work with are of a fairly broad age group, and looking to improve their overall conditioning. While losing that extra 20lbs can go a long way in improving one's self confidence, most people are surprised at the even more significant benefits of being healthy. For one person that could mean the confidence and ability to play with their grandchildren like they've always wanted to, and for someone else it might mean running their first 5k.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Finding a good trainer can be like finding anyone else in a service-related industry. Essentially, you're not buying a product, but a person and their expertise. Some may come with more credentials, while another may have more real world experience. Some combination of both is ideal. Your goals should be relatively within the scope of experience of the trainer. For example, If your goal is training for something very specific, such as a marathon/ultra marathon, and you are already fairly conditioned, finding a "running coach" trainer may be your best bet. Don't make your decision only based on price point. If you found a trainer you really like, look into practical options, like training with a friend, before going with the cheaper service.
