All we have to say is hire this man now! Originally our "guy" had said he could do the tile job. Halfway in we discovered he couldn’t. We posted our emergency on thumbtack. Andrei answered promptly. He came out quickly and offered a competitive price. He tore out the old job and put “the master,” Stanislav on the case. The reviews of Andrei's team are great. But seeing them in action was even better! Good communication, good work, a minimum of fuss and noise. He undid so much and performed some beautiful and complicated cuts. He always answered any questions with patience and knowledge and offered design advice too. Andrie even knew the store where we bought our tile, just by looking at it! Now, we clean up like a king and a queen in our very fancy spa shower. Thanks guys!

At first I hired Tom to move some plumbing in my kitchen remodel. He was on time, professional and very reasonably priced. He left our initial appointment just for an estimate with more work than he bargained for and each week I added more. In the end, he remodeled half of my house. From plumbing to electrical to tile to drywall, etc.. His crew is great and very respectful. My master bath looks amazing. Before he even finished my job I was referring him to family and friends. Do yourself a favor and hire him if you are reading this review. You won’t be disappointed.

Ron put a bathroom in, in our bsmt. He did so well, I hired him to do a storage room, building the frame and putting in the doors. He also installed a sump pump and ran extra electric outlets for us. He is also booked to do our tile job in kitchen in June.

Karol and his team went above and beyond! Our back deck was in bad shape and in major need of staining. Karol was not only quick with his response, he immediately set us up with a date for the work to be done and gave us a large selection of brands and colors to choose from so we could really make it ours. His team was so friendly and worked really hard to do the job right. They not only power washed our deck, but sanded and even repaired and replaced our broken lattice. The color also turned out great! We are so in love with the new look of or porch! Thank you so much to Karol and his team! Couldn't have asked for a better job! :)

Gracie helped with the estimate & appointment process, and Marek came over in a couple of days to perform the work. The job is wonderfully complete and Marek was very polite and friendly! I plan on asking him to put in new showers and floor in two bathrooms now.

CM cleaned my bathrooms and kitchen really well! One of the bathrooms was so nasty that I could not fathom how the stains got on the toilet and tiles when the previous tenant lived there, but CM transformed it into a brand new, flawless bathroom! She also helped clean out the condensed milk spilled in my fridge completely at no extra cost. I truly appreciate her efficiency, work quality, and friendliness. I will definitely invite her back in the future.

Steve and Dom did a great job on my bathroom project. I was attempting to complete this project on a tight timeline (in time for holiday parties) and they really came through. They were able to start right away, showed up on time, and made sure everything was done to my liking. They really went above and beyond to make sure my bathroom looked great. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality tile job for a reasonable price. I plan to use them on future tile jobs in my home.

Last winter, the snow really took a toll on my roof and subsequently, my living room. Once I got the roof fixed, I needed the living room ceiling repaired and painted. I contacted Perfect Interiors and Ed (the owner) gave me a very reasonable quote to do the entire room. The workers arrived on time, repaired the water damage and painted the ceiling. Ed helped me pick out the perfect wall color as well as an accent color for one wall. I can hardly believe it's the same room! Ed was so helpful I decided to have him remodel my master bathroom. I didn't know where to start but he assisted with choosing a vanity top, sink, fixtures, tile and paint colors. Once again, they did a wonderful job. Five stars!!

I have been looking for a company to help with the remodeling in my basement. Im glad I found B & B Construction. I called Mr. Wilson out for a quote and it was the most affordable that I came across. They got started the next day. The started by taking up the tile and taking down the damaged drywall. They were very professional and respected my time. They showed up when they said they would and got a substantial amount of work done in only a few hours. After they were done with the drywall they neatly painted the whole basement. I requested the baseboards to be painted blue and the walls white. I was very satisfied with the overall cleanliness and quality of the job! Ill be contacting B & B again for my next home improvement projection the spring as well as recommending them to friends! Thank you all!

He was wonderful! Came into our home, assessed our tile leak, provided a solution that we could do ourselves and said if it didn’t work, he could come back and reassess. Did this for free! His suggestion worked and saved us time and $$. This is an honest company - I appreciate that.

Vince explained in detail the process, brought in samples to show the color options and explained how long it would take to complete the job. He had his installer use Armstrong vinyl tiles, a product that my parents used when they did the family room after moving into their home. The installer took his time to make the room look like new again! Vince did come out to inspect the floor after the job was complete.

I was doing a full house rehab and I hired him to redo 3 full bathrooms. He was GREAT!! He was always on time, flexible to work with, worked very hard, honest, neat & clean, and he walked me through all the steps, while he listened to what I was looking for while keeping me within my budget! He ripped out all the old tile, toilets, sinks, counters and he identified ways where I could recycle some of the material to reuse inside the new upgraded rooms. He even helped me coordinate where and what counters to pick, what new hardware to install that matched the vision he helped me create with the tile work he installed. He’s definitely got the eye for turning things into amazing finishes and he was able to make the rooms stand out with a WOW that I now love to show off as part of the whole house rehab project. I’ve referred him already a couple times and I will use him again when needed. He’s got vision and tenacity that I really appreciated during my renovation project.

--Exceeded our expectations-- We had never used Thumbtack and were a bit nervous about trying it, but we're very happy with how our subway tile kitchen backsplash turned out. Marcin of MAK Tile did the work with care, craftsmanship and customer focus (i.e., he listened to us), and even added a couple of pleasing touches we hadn't thought of. Wow. Better than expected. We made a great choice!

InTime Inc. did a great job with my flooring. Their pricing was fair for all that they did (remove carpeting, remove asbestos tiles and haul away to proper disposal site, put in new flooring...). I recommend them and would use their contrasting services again.

He did a great job working around our schedule and his. Spent a few nights til 10pm bc he is overly detailed. No tile job is the same and you can tell James cares about his work because any flaws he will point out before (if) you even notice them. He will correct them without question. He even left me a tool for a completely separate project I was working on to make my life easier and he will pick it up when I’m done using it. Great guy...highly recommend

Our kitchen remodel was a big project as we have a large kitchen. Kamil and his crew were all craftsmen and specialized in various areas from demo, tiling, electrical, installation of new cabinets, painting and new dry wall. Kamil is somewhat of a perfectionist which we appreciated. He took time to explain recommendations that only enhanced our project. The end result exceeded our expectations. Denise K- Lake Zurich

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
