We hired Lee to train our two pups who are older and very stubborn. We wanted to ensure the safety of our infant daughter. Lee's training is different than past ones I have used in the best way possible - what a difference in our two dogs after just 3 days! Lee knows so much about dog behavior and how to counteract all their bad habits. He teaches you very clearly how to keep the training going yourself afterwards. I would absolutely recommend this trainer to anyone - even with older 'untrainable' dogs!

Marianna did a fabulous job with our dog! She was very professional and gave us great tips and training on how to handle our dog’s aggressive behavior. Our dog’s behavior has greatly improved over the 6 week period.

My rescue dog and I have been working with John for several weeks now. On our very first visit, Ziva was very relaxed around John and now greatly enjoys her lessons with him. John is very helpful with specific issues and offers great solutions. He provides specific goals for each lesson and the way to achieve them--all in written form. So far our lessons have been private so we get undivided attention. And I have seen great improvement in Ziva and her lively behavior. But I am looking forward to beginning semi private sessions. Where we can advance in our real world skills. John's patience and reassurance as well as his extensive knowledge and love for dogs is exceptional. This is the way to go if you are in need of a great dog training experience.

Katherine walked my dog, Willie, one day when I was unable to. She was punctual and professional, yet friendly and easy to talk with. Katherine appears to be very knowledgeable about dogs and dog behavior, and she interacted quite well with Willie. Katherine walked Willie for a good hour, and while walking, provided him with water. I would readily hire her again without reservation.

Even in the short time that Spot and my family spent with Sherry, it was certain that she has a true understanding and passion for animals and for people. Her technique is to teach both humans and animals how to become a pact. Highly Recommended!

Dawn has been so patient with me and my dog Scout. Not only has she helped to train Scout, but he has given me so much insight about where some of his behavior comes from. I won't lie Scout is a difficult dog, but she has been amazing with him! Even the cat likes her!! I have had success with the methods she has taught us and Scout continues to improve. I reccomend her to anyone who needs dog training!

Justine's been absolutely amazing. I have a very smart, but sometimes very stubborn pup who was experiencing a little bit of reactive behavior on leash. She's worked so well with my dog and myself to understand the why's and how's of training. You can tell she really cares about the dogs also. Would absolutely recommend!

I have a nine year old, minimally trained, Golden Retriever who has no social skills. I also have an 80 year old mother who lives with me. My mother tripped over my Golden, broke her arm and leg, a while back, and I have been contemplating giving my dog away to a rescue group. My last hope was Jenn. She came to my home and evaluated Einey. It is amazing. After only six sessions, he is a different dog. He is following commands, going to his "spot" whenever he is in my mom's path, and I am able to take calm walks with him. My son, who lives out of town, could not believe Einey's great behavior, when he was visiting. Jenn deserves her own show!! I am so thankful that I am able to keep my beloved doggie and feel assured that my mom is safe from another fall. Thanks again, Jenn. You're the best!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
