JOB: Installation of new hot water heater and a whole house water filter. The job was complicated by the previous plumbing being poorly configured. 1. Grateful Plumber came to my house on the same day I called them to give me an estimate. 2. They arrived in the expected white van with Company Logo on the side. (This means they spent some money on their business - they take it seriously). 3. They examined my setup, explained how to fix it so it would be easier for me access shut-offs, etc. (A nice touch). 4. The estimate was reasonable (not excessively cheap nor too expensive). It was less than a previous estimate, but more than a handy-man would have charged me. However, this job was a bit out of reach of the kind of skills that a handy-man typically has, and I wanted it done right the first time. 5. Grateful Plumber installed everything the next day (I gave them short notice). I really liked that they would do it right away and not make me wait a week or two. 6. He thought of everything. He even installed extra shut-off values that I hadn't thought to ask for. He did the job the same way that he would've done it in his own home. 7. The lay-out of the piping is MUCH better than before. I can shut off the water to the entire house or only the water heater or only the whole house water filter by flipping a single lever (and not having to bend over or look behind anything to find the shut-offs. FANTASTIC! 8. After installation, they gave us a receipt and sent another receipt to my email. They also emailed me prior to coming out, as well as, when they had finished the job. Lastly, I wasn't home when they did the installation. My wife was home alone. At no time did she feel uneasy or uncomfortable while Grateful Plumber was in our home. They were friendly, but more importantly, they acted professionally (a little chit-chat, but not too much). They focused on the job and kept busy the entire time. It took between 3-4 hours from start to end. All in all, I can tell you that I wouldn't hesitate to call them again if I ever have another plumbing problem. The price is good. The work is excellent. I highly recommend them.

Our water heater broke and was leaking into our house. Ron responded immediately late on a Friday evening and got us in Saturday morning first thing! Home Depot wouldn’t touch our water heater and told us it would be a week to fix because of where it was located in our garage. Ron got our old one out and a new one it and it up to code and working in an hour and said he would install a water softener for us as well if we needed him to come back. Would recommend to anyone!

Having being customer service manager for about a decade, I know a great service when I receive one. Greg did an excellent job. Not only did he take the time to explain how water softener works, he completed the job to my requirements, taught me part of it and was timely responsive when needed. He was better priced than corporation plumbers that suggested useless work to bump up their service labor cost. that I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Service: Water Heater - Removal and Installation Scarier than the clowns that have recently manifested are the horror stories with contractors and their abysmal work. Luckily, I was able to find Mr. Hankerson. He is a highly professional, and more importantly, a trustworthy contractor. His knowledge and expertise was matched only by his etiquette. Despite my incompetence when it comes to plumbing and water heaters, Mr. Hankerson was able to answer all of my preliminary questions and concerns. Subsequently, I was able to schedule a same-day removal and replacement of my water heater. After Mr. Hankerson completed the work, he spent an additional 30 minutes updating me about the new water heater and ways to extend/improve the life of unit. I will definitely hire Mr. Willie Hankerson again and would recommend him – without reservations – to anyone else.

Pilot light on water heater would not stay lit, so I assumed I needed a new thermocoupler. Mo. came and, within ten seconds, guessed that a vent was clogged and it just needed to be cleaned and the unit just needed to be reset. Not only did he fix it, but he explained the problem and showed me how to fix - as well as - to avoid the problem in the future. I highly recommend Mo. This will be my first call for any plumbing, etc. needs in the future.

I had a very pleasant experience working with Michael. I was particularly impressed with his strong work ethic and extremely reasonable pricing. If you are looking for a hardworking, trustworthy, dependable plumber who is priced extremely well, Michael fits the bill. You don't get "brand" or "professionalism" of a big-name plumbing company but you save a significant amount of money. Service Plus was going to charge me $800 to install my water heater, Lowes and Home Depot provided me estimates around $600; Michael completed the install for just over $200 for everything--parts, labor, removal of old water heater. Michael earned every penny! It was refreshing to work with someone who understood the meaning of hard work and offered exceptional value. I enjoyed working with Michael and would definitely hire him again for future plumbing jobs. Highly recommend!

Adam was fantastic! I hired him to help me with my hot water heater. It is old and needs to be replaced but he made a temporary fix to get me by until I'm able to replace it. His rates were very reasonable. He was professional, knowledgeable, hard working and willing to help me with multiple plumbing problems on his visit. He talked me through my plumbing issues and gave me his expert suggestions.

My water heater finally died after 18 years. I called FlowPro and Ron came out later that morning to provide an estimate to replace it. After discussing several options, I decided to go with a tankless water heater in place of a traditional gas water heater. The technician was able to come out that afternoon to replace it and I was able to take a hot shower that night! Very impressed with their prompt service and everyone was professional, from the office gal to the technician. I highly recommend them!

I needed all vanity and kitchen faucets replaced in the house due to hard water damage and also have the water heater flushed. They were on time for the appointment and did a really good job. I called them back a week later for additional work and they managed to be there the same day.

Affordable Home Solutions has been both reasonably priced and reliable. Bob and Mike have done several jobs for me. Bob rebuilt a storage barn door, replaced siding, mitigated water problems I was having in my basement and helped me find resources to locate a small gas leak. Most recently Bob and Mike remodeled my basement including demolition of the existing basement, putting up drywall, adding a new wall and doors to separate utilities from usable space, adding electrical outlets and lights and painting an epoxy floor. I have been very impressed with the quality of their work and their work ethic. I will hire them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.
