It was an absolute pleasure to have Al work on our home. Our refinished floors are beautiful!!! His communication, customer service, and work effort is outstanding. The time and energy that he gave to complete our project even earlier than we hoped was incredible. My husband and I are thrilled with his work and hope more of our home projects will be coming his way in the near future. We highly recommend A and A Home Finishing!

Jake is extremely thorough, professional and skilled. My 107 year-old house had leaks I didn't even know about. When he removed the old tile, he showed me how the subfloor had decayed. He removed the rotted wood, re-tied the floor joists, installed cement board and said he wanted this replacement tile and subfloor to last another 100 years. Expert work. Perfect finish and not a trace of a mess. He is a rare breed of proficiency. Always polite, careful to inform me of any changes and was respectful of my time and my home. AAA+++

If you are reading this review because you are thinking of having your wood floors installed or refinished this has been my experience with the company Classic Floors in Fort Wayne Indiana. When we first went to their place of business we were met by Kay. She showed us into the show room of wood floors, you felt as if you were in a business that did quality work. We did the rental of their equipment instead of them doing the work. When you rent from classic floors you use the same equipment and products they use when they do a job. I had to do some repair work on my floor and Pat was very helpful and patient in telling me how to do so. Kay was knowledgeable on getting me the correct amount of wood for the repair. When you rent the equipment, Pat is very good at making sure you have an understanding of how the equipment works. We actually had hands on training prior to walking out the door of their shop with the equipment. Pat went above and beyond by even telling us how to take care of any mistakes we may cause while stripping the floor, such as drum marks in the floor. They may be a little more costly than a box store (Home Depot or Lowes), but they give you their support and knowledge. Pat even gave us his cell phone number and told us to call if we had any problems. I did have to call Pat and Kay for advice and they were very prompt at getting me the answers I needed. The floor turned out beautiful and we are really glad that we were able to do our floors with their help. If you can afford it, I would suggest letting Classic Floors to do your floors for you. It is a lot of work; if you’re willing you can do it with their guidance and quality products that you can’t get at a box store.

Castle Restorations

We have used Eric at Castle Restorations in two homes and in each one, we got amazing results. Both homes were built in the late 1800's and Eric's knowledge of the process and ownership of what he and his crew were doing was excellent and in both cases we ended with finished products that were beyond our expectations. Our most recent project entailed working with multiple different kinds of wood floors and some very damaged areas and it was great to have Eric's expertise in this project. They were able to match the grain and tone of the wood seemlessly into these old floors. I can't say enough about how hard they worked, how hard they worked to keep everything clean and dust free and what a perfectionist Eric is when it comes to the final product. We have recommended Castle Restorations to others so I have seen other projects that Castle Restorations have done in other older and several newer homes and results are equally amazing. I never really price shopped anyone else, as Castle Restorations pricing seemed extremely reasonable. Every (and I mean EVERY) new visitor that comes through our door makes a superlative comment about how fantastic our floors look, and those that knew what it looked like before are virtually speechless! We are so proud of our beautiful home, and the guys at Castle Restorations should be proud of the work they do!

Kyle from K&C Const. did a wonderful job for our remodel. We had new hardwood and ceramic floors installed. Kyle did an excellent job scheduling job, (actually they finished two day early), from ordering all the materials, to the finished product. My wife and I will definitely recommend this company to all our friends and relatives. Thank you Kyle and the hard working employees at K&C Const.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
