They fixed an area below a downspout where the boards had rotted due to some sort of leak. It required them to remove the gutter & wood (2x6). They even cleaned out the gutter and wiped off the residue while they were there. They also caulked down the roof shingles they believed were likely the cause of the original leak. They then put up new boards, painted, caulked, and sealed everything even better than new. They then readjusted a wooden gate that had hung without a clasp for years I imagine (I just recently purchased the home so I can't say for sure). But this had caused the post to lean in slightly, making even the new hardware I had installed not work properly or without my having to pull the gate upwards every time. Instead of trying to reset the post, which was still secure at the base, they simply adjusted all the hardware and wood on the gate, since they felt the fence was also leaning inward due to the long overdo gate pulling everything inward, and would cause the post to once again lean in the near future. Now, for the first time since I moved here, the gate opens and closes without the least amount of hesitation, work, or resistance. I am extremely pleased with Shane's work and both he and Paul's professionalism. They were courteous. Gave me an accurate estimate. They even shared some simple things I can do to solve other issues. Excellent company. I couldn't be more pleased. I will definitely call them in the future if anything else crops up... without hesitation.

Had a 5,000sqft fence stained, house caulked for winterizing, concrete patches filled, and expansion joints cut into a new patio installed wrong by a different contractor. Keith was professional, had all his own tools, worked efficiently, with outstanding results. He takes no short cuts and I will be hiring him for all my future home repair needs.

I desperately needed my perennial flower beds weeded. Michael arrived for our initial meeting on time and took a brief tour with me to see the beds needing attention and gave me a very reasonable estimate. We made arrangements for today and again he arrived in a timely fashion. He proceeded to weed my beds to my complete satisfaction, not wasting any time, and agreed to do trimming around the flower beds when I asked, even though it was not something we had previously discussed. He plans to come back to spray the weeds and grass in our driveway and another area when there is not a threat of rain. I appreciated the fact that he wanted to wait for optimal weather conditions to spray, even though the product's label indicates it is ok to spray within 10 minutes of rain. I will definitely have him back for other lawn care/gardening projects. He is very personable and a hard worker.

We have had Myers Construction do a few odd jobs for us. Dry wall in the garage, new light fixture in the laundry room, and replaced a bad sink in our bathroom. Steve does a GREAT job, stays on task, and actually cleans up after himself when he is done. We have been very satisfied with his work and will call him again when we need him. We have had to have a lot of work done on our house for one reason or another, and I am more happy with Steve's work, than the "big" contractors that we have had to have in here. We are very glad that we found him!!!!! We have been very impressed with him, and will hire him again when something comes up.

He did an excellent job rehanging my gate. He made sure (because of it's size and weight) that it was reinforced where the hinges were reattached and squared and leveled it completely. I will use them again for sure!

We used Eli for a couple of handyman jobs around our house including cutting/refitting pavers around newly installed pergola columns. He was great to work with and we hope to use him to redo our fence and gates later this year. Thank you Eli!

We had Indy & Beyond come out to replace a section of privacy fence that our dog knocked over. They showed us how poorly our fence had been constructed (which was only 2 years old!). Unfortunately, we were forced to have the entire fence replaced or risked our dog tearing down the rest of the old fence. The good news is, Indy & Beyond gave us a great deal on a fence that is installed properly and will hopefully last us a lifetime. We are very pleased with this company and will use them again for sure, as well as recommend them to others.

I have called upon RMC on several occasions for a variation of jobs. From installing a sliding glass door in my family room, remodeling my formal living room (with gas log fireplace), laying tile flooring in three bathrooms, stripping linoleum flooring and replacing it with laminated wood giving it a genuine hardwood floor appearance to fixing the gate on my backyard fence. They are professional, meticulous de fast and efficient. I would readily endorse RMC for any work within your home.

Hughes Electrical Connection did an OUTSTANDING job on the installation of recess lighting in my kitchen. (1) They showed up right now time and (2) they were very professional. They took there time with the measurements and wanted to make sure everything was going to be done right. They explained the process and allowed me to see exactly what they needed to do. It took them just 3 hours from pulling in my driveway to full completion. I am very happy with their service. Because the project was a bit more difficult than anticipated the price did increase by $50, but it was definitely worth it. I highly recommend Hughes Electrical (Mike Hughes) for your electrical needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
