I was selling my house which needed some minor repairs. I contacted Thumbtack. I was matched with several Contractors in my area. I chose Lakefront General Contractors & Cleaning Services, and l'm so happy I did. They came out and accessed what needed to be done. I was impressed by the professionalism and the caring nature of the gentleman that came. He was very concern and attentive to what I was explaining needed to be done. He did an excellent and outstanding job...he went above and beyond the call of duty! Very conscientious, and had a very good sense of humor to boot! He completed the job to perfection! I am so happy and pleased with the work that was done! I highly recommend them!!!!

Ron has completed several projects for me both personally and as a General Contractor over the past 15 years. In a world where integrity is a man's biggest asset, Ron should be considered a leader. When I hire somebody to execute a project no matter large or small, I want people who have high integrity, who are dependable, who pay close attention to detail and return to rectify any mistakes. I would recommend Ron to friends, family and anyone in need of getting a project done right!

James Prather called to confirm, showed up on time, completed the job to perfection, and was very professional. We were on a tight time frame in selling our home and needed the work completed in order to close. He fit us in the next day and stayed until dark to make sure it was done correctly. We would recommend him because he was an honest, hard-working, and fair contractor.

I needed my new cabnets installed without having to remove the granite counter top. I was told by several other contractors that it could not be done without removing or cracking the top but Scott Kellett got it done and did a great job. Thanks Kellett Construction.

So glad I finally have a roofer I can trust! I had a great experience with Juan from morales roofing, i was impressed with his honesty and integrity! I had him out for a free estimate on a roof leak of a house i am remodeling, and my interior crew couldn't figure out where it was from. It turned out to be something so small and easy, that he suggested for me to have my crew fix it which saved me money beacaus roofers have a minimum charge for repairs, and i was also very impressed with how polite he was. I would recommend him to anyone needing a roof repair or needing a full roof replacement!

I am so happy that I tried Thumbtack . I had several contractors reach out immediately. But Shield Coatings was different. They took the time to examine my photos and then showed up ON TIME to meet me at the project. Once we decided to go forward , Keenan did a FANTASTIC job . I hope we can do many more transactions together... He painted the home within 2 days of our meeting. And I am happy to report we sold the home at the first showing after! Great Guy. Cant say enough. Gentleman , trustworthy and very very good.

Zach is great. He knows his stuff. He is friendly, soft spoken, helpful, knowledgable, and quick. Zach had several options for us to save us money, which usually included him knowing how to make something out of nothing using his craft and expertise. He did drywall repair, drywall ceiling repair, fixed locks, replaced tub drain, cleaned up bad woodwork, replaced a ceiling fan, caulked a tub, and fixed a wobbly toilet seat. All jobs needed to be done, but we had been putting them off for years, so we finally bit the bullet and hired someone. We will continually hire him to help us do those pesky things that we can't seem to get done or know how to do.

James is awesome. Not only did he complete my job perfectly, he was committed fully to it until it was satisfactorily done even though it was a relatively small drywall project for him. And, on top of that, he was in close contact the full time and happy to work around my schedule. I would absolutely recommend James, not just as a great drywall guy, but as a dependable person overall.

The Maddox Men from Indy Painting have been my "go to" contractors for all indoor and outdoor painting needs for well over 10 years! They are also the men I call if I have a small project around the house that needs special attention. They have painted my entire home and have tackled EVERYTHING including painting intricate moulding and 15ft walls and ceilings that have required scaffolding - - painting cabinetry - staining custom built ins - small tiling projects - outdoor deck repairs and sealing - hanging outdoor garden lights - even installing new extraction fans in the bathrooms along with new faucets! Allow them the time and they will give you an excellent finished project.

I had Thad install an exterior door for me... he got it done quickly in the time frame I had hoped for. He made it very easy to work with him... I simply bought a door at Menards, he picked it up and installed it for me a couple days later. Trustworthiness is the most important to me in finding a contractor... I found Thad to be honest and very trustworthy. I would definitely recommend.

I hired Wharton Construction to install a coffered ceiling in my living room and kitchen. Josh provided me with a competitive bid, a few reputable references, and a sample piece to show me what the end result would look like. The entire ceiling was a custom design, and Josh went to great lengths to make sure some of the more complex details came out looking great! And it did, we could not be more happy with our custom ceiling! He even took care of some items that were not on the original quote. I would definitely hire him again, and in fact I have. Since the completion of the ceiling, Josh has done some custom cabinetry work in our kitchen, including a built-in buffet and a chimney style range hood that matches our existing cabinetry. He did an excellent job with these pieces as well! I would highly recommend Wharton Construction for any custom carpentry work.

I've had a working relationship with the guys at Brothers Home Solutions for at least the last 3 or 4 years. I utilized them for numerous projects when I worked in the multi-family housing industry over the years. These projects included interior and exterior painting, power washing, roofing repairs, drywall replacement, complete unit remodels (demo, wall prep and drywall repairs, interior trim, cabinet/countertop install, door install, appliance replacement, etc.), stick-built construction of trash compactor surround/enclosure, and full unit make ready assistance when we were short of maintenance staff. I'm now working for a landscape contractor and we're continuing to use them as a subcontractor for various projects. The quality of their craftsmanship is great, all the guys are very kind and respectful, they're always quick to respond when I need them, and their bids have always been very competitive as well. I've also recommended them to friends, family and other businesses many times over the years. Monica Park Account Manager Komplete Landscape Contractors Indianapolis, IN

Wes installed a Pella sliding door for me well under the lowest bid I had from other contractors. While taking out the old door he uncovered some water damaged framing which he also repaired. The door and trim look great. It was one the most positive experiences I've had dealing with a contractor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
