Terrance is a ROCK STAR! He contacted me immediately, offered to arrange his schedule to accommodate a tight timeline and gave it 110%. Very happy that I was able to find him via thumbtack, and will definitely be using him in the future (for painting but also electrical and a few other home projects he seems very knowledgable of)! First class guy!

A+ rating. Mr. Arnold repaired broken panes of glass on a set of old interior french doors. He was quick to respond and communicated throughout the entire process. I'm a landlord and had to juggle tenants schedules. Mr. Arnold was flexible and understanding. He's at the top of my list for my next property repair job! Excellent work!

Sergio far exceeded my expectations! I am in midst of painting our whole main level, and I contracted him to paint my two-story foyer that I couldn't manage. He and his partner arrived promptly, were extremely courteous and professional and painted a larger area than I expected, helping me immensely. He's been painting for over 12 years and is starting on his own - you won't be sorry you hired him. The work is top-notch - I highly recommend Sergio for your next painting project.

I was looking for a interior painting contractor to paint our master bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. I was given names of painters from various friends and co-workers. I was amazed that no one either called me back or the ones that did, never showed up to give an estimate. I then went on thumbtack and found Pedro. Him and his wife Hilda arrived promptly at my house at the time scheduled. I received a written estimate the next day. I felt the estimate was fair, even though I did not get any other bids. Pedro started the job on the day we agreed upon. I asked him if it would be a problem to add painting a powder room and to do some tile work in the bath. He was able to add on the additional work. Pedro and Hilda have a high level of attention to detail. The tile work Pedro did in the master bath exceeded my expectations. They were very easy to work with, and were always concerned with my complete satisfaction. I would strongly recommend them.

Jeff painted the interior of my garage and rehung some wire shelving. He showed up when he said he would, finished the job in a timely manner and his quote was better than the bigger handyman companies in the area. Would definitely hire again!

Julio is the most responsive contractor I've ever worked with! He is quick to reply, shows up when he says he will, gave us a fair price, and did FANTASTIC work!! I hired him to replace two walls in my kitchen with Hardie Backer Board prior to cabinet and tile installation and to repair/patch holes in the drywall from renovations and moving electrical plugs and lighting. We painted last night and cannot begin to tell where the patching was done. The work is flawless. Julio is a super nice guy and made a stressful time during an extensive renovation much more pleasant! Looking forward to having him back in 6 weeks or so to install the wall tile as we wrap up the project.

Sam Ross has done multiple projects for me. A few years ago I purchased my first home, a foreclosure, and it needed a lot of work. I hired Sam to scrape and paint the exterior trim. He was great at helping advise me which paint to use and why. He did a really nice job at a good price. Since then I have hired him for many different projects: painting my bathroom and dining room, installing wainscoting in my dining room, and painting and installing crown molding in my office, plus doing some drywall repair work. On the outside of my house he has repaired brickwork and he even put on my new roof. It looks amazing and best of all it doesn't leak anymore. Sam is always professional. He has a great eye and is very knowledgeable about how to best go about doing a job and what products to use. I would highly recommend him and look forward to hiring him again soon.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

          • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
          • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
          • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
          • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
          • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
          • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225

          How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.
