After buying our house and living in it for a few months we wanted to change the floors. The flooring consultant told us that there were some issues with the floor that needed to be fixed before he could do anything. That began an 18 month quest for someone who could do the entire home instead of just one section. Thumbtack was actually a last ditch effort to find someone but I am so glad that I posted. Mr. Fouts and his team responded promptly, came out quickly, were reasonably priced and able to start right away. The entire support of the house was done in under two weeks. The floors are even, nothing jiggles as you walk through it and my kitchen looks brand new now that there's no massive dip in the center of it. I cannot say enough good things about the work they did. My house feels so much better. Great work and great people. Highly recommended. Thanks for your patience and explanations of the work.

I had hired Gomez to move my studio apartment to another apartment on the 3rd floor. The workers were efficient and careful in moving my furniture to the new apartment. They were also quick to work with the problems of my new apartment's management company as we were locked out (unintentionally due to January 1st being a holiday for my move in day) by moving more furniture from outside in the -12F weather inside to the first floor until we could get access to the 3rd floor. I would highly recommend them for moving again.

We hired Custom Craftmanship to restore the hardwood floors (oak, pine, and maple) in our 1920s craftsman home. Part of the job required removing several layers of linoleum in the foyer and an old Berber carpet in the living room. Despite the complexities of a restoration in an old house like ours, Eric's team finished the job on time, within our budget, and most importantly, the floors are beautiful. Eric was consistently punctual from quote to completion. I would definitely recommend their work and plan on using Custom Craftmanship in the future.

I could not be happier with the service and work they have done. Martin and Son renovated a house for me from redoing the inside to re doing the pluming and floor and so much more! He was straight up with me and was not misleading or charge me outrageously. I will defiantly be calling Martin and Son for future services!

James and his crew did a fantastic job on my floors. I am absolutely blown away with how good they look. They did a great job explaining the process, how long it would take to do, and how to take care of them after they were done.

Serrano Tile put tile floors in 4 bathrooms and a laundry room. In addition, he put tile in a walk-in shower int he master bath. To say that we were pleased with his work would not do him justice. It was flat OUTSTANDING!! We gave him multiple designs, complex cuts, some large areas and he handled it all wonderfully. All lines are perfectly straight. The tile is all perfectly level. It looks better than we had imagined in every room! The other thing we noticed is that the work ethic was second to none! We couldn't have been happier and definitely would highly recommend Serrano tile for any tile needs!

Juan was the consummate professional. He handled a variety of jobs that we threw at him with ease, from flooring the entire house (including wood laminate on the stairs) to countertop to even some other installations that came up along the way. His top priority was to make sure that he took care of our home the way that he would take care of his own. There were no shortcuts and everything was done with attention to detail. The end result was even better than we could have hoped. His communication was consistently top-notch and Juan really made us a priority. This is an easy recommendation for any carpentry or handyman work; he will be my first call the next time I need something. Thank you!

    About

I specialize in the installation of all types of ceramic tile, marble and stone, hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, vinyl, LVT, VCT, and carpet. I have been installing floors for over 28 years, and my partner has been installing floor for 35 years. There is no job too big or small we won't do. We also do repairs on all types of floors and restretches on carpets, provided the carpet has not delaminated from the backing. Unlike most flooring stores where the sales people will make the installer cut corners and go over a floor that is not suitable for a guaranteed installation, thus ending up with a failed flooring installation, I will make sure you are not steered in a bad direction and give you an installation that meets industry standards. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
