Prior to working with Creative Concepts, I had trouble getting quotes from companies--I let P. Muha at Creative Concepts know about the difficulties I had been having. He listened to my frustration, and understood that it was very important to me to get my back porch steps repaired before winter weather arrived. I walk with a cane and my husband is 83 years old. Our old steps and railings were very wobbly. Creative Concepts came out to measure within a couple days of our contact, he came back in person to discuss his work proposal options and quotes. He quickly scheduled our work and both the new steps and the garage fascia were completed in less than one work day. The area was completely cleaned up, and their work was awesome. The steps look so great I posted a picture of them on Facebook to show off to my family and friends. Now I can confidently go up and down the stairs feeling safe and a huge worry is off my shoulders. The price and terms were very reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend Creative Concepts to anyone. They are the Best in my book.

I can't give this company 5 stars because I requested my house to be power washed. Brandon did a great job but he did not power wash the soffits or eavestroughs. When I mentioned these areas he said when we did the walk through he thought I only wanted the siding power washed. I told him I didn't know this was `a la cart. I pointed out green areas on some areas of the siding that was my concern but I wanted the whole house power washed. I was told they could come back for an additional charge to do Soffits and eaves but I felt it should have been done from the beginning. I had already paid them $400. The front of my house was never done. I told Brandon if he couldn't do the front porch I understood because we had Christmas decorations but he could have done the siding around the garage. Lesson learned. Brandon should have asked me if I wanted the soffits and eavestroughs cleaned when we did the walk through.

Quick to respond and came to the house on time. The door he hung looks great. He Walked through the house with muddy boots. And did not clean up after he was done- left the old hinges, screws and wood dust, etc on the floor.

We have hired many people on Thumbtack and David has by far been the best to work with. Repaired wood front porch, deck, and siding. He was to able solve a lot of complicated challenges with very smart and practical solutions. Our home is more than 100 years old and Dave intimately understood the quirks of older homes and how to approach repairs while being true to the original. The harder the task the more excited he seemed to take it on and the more proud upon completion. Would hire him again and highly recommend.

After having Brad gives me quotes for replacing my rotting front porch, I made the decision to go with composite decking and I cannot say how happy I am with that decision. The porch looks wonderful and Brad was extremely responsive to my questions, came when he said he was coming and did a wonderful job. Alot of attention to detail and I now have a porch that I feel was custom built. He also replaced cellar doors I badly needed replaced and did a wonderful job of shoring up the sides as well. I have had a lot of compliments on the work and would certainly recommend Brad to anyone looking for a porch or deck build. Wonderful job!!

Bailey Construction designed and built a deck on our new construction home, and we couldn't be happier with the result. Bailey Construction was wonderful to work with throughout the entire process, from input on the best size and positioning of our deck to fit our needs, to the actual construction, which was high quality and completed efficiently. I would highly recommend Bailey Construction.

We have a 120 year old Historic Blue Island, Illinois home with big "L" shaped porch that unfortunately was rotting away. We called all kinds on contractors to look at the porch and offer an estimate--they came and we never heard back. I guess the job was too complicated. It was complicated. We wanted to keep the original historic look and yet do the job with a lasting quality craftsmanship. We turned to Thumbtack and found Gene Steele, from G.A. STEELE CONSTRUCTION. Gene Steele seemed to recognize immediately the needs and values we wanted to work with. We were pressing against the winter weather, starting the job the last week of October--that ended up being our biggest obstacle, but many other changes had to be made as we encountered the work. Concrete, cement footing for the porches piers, rebuilding the piers, and the entire rebuilding of the under the porch supports. Gene worked with it all. When the Polar Vortex hit in December it was obvious the work would have to hold off, yet he secured a site to pre-stain the decking so when a day opened up it was ready. I found Gene incredibly knowledgeable and flexible. He has promised to come back out in the Spring to check on a few items and stain the deck one last finish coat. The entire cost was over the original bid, but there was good reason and was not a surprise to us since he kept us in the loop about the problems. We feel so much more secure now that our porch is restored, crafted, and simply looking good.

JOHN has completed many projects in our household, including most of our hardwood floor installation, resurfacing our large deck, custom building sidelight panels to fit art glass that I ordered for our front door and refinishing h the door so it all looks brand new, and installing “floating” laminate in our large master closet. All of his work is superb, John is so quiet that you never remember he’s there, and he’s incredibly clean! Also, dogs love him! I’ve asked John to handle some “honey dos” that my husband had been avoiding while onsite as well, and like everything else he’s done he took them on fearlessly without any complaints!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
