Al was phenomenal! Just to give some context, I needed a photographer four days before my graduation ceremony. Al was extremely responsive, and we were able to nail down the details by the day graduation rolled around. My ceremony started at 4:30 p.m., and Al arrived at 3:00 p.m., giving us plenty of time to coordinate the photography. He took great photos before, during, and after the graduation ceremony. He did a great job of figuring out the best ways to take photographs of me and my family, and the photos came out great. He is a very social person, and made me and my family feel at ease during the entire process. Moreover, his prices were very reasonable. He was taking photographs for four hours or so, and I know that other photographers I was looking at charged significantly more than Al. I cannot recommend Al highly enough, and if there was an event in the future that I needed photographs for, Al would definitely be the person I would consider hiring.

Cory did a fantastic job with my family! We included our puppy in our family photos and Cory went above and beyond to make sure we got some great shots! She was patient and flexible. She met us at our desired location, made sure we had plenty of pictures taken, and was flexible about payment options. She was phenomenal. We can't wait to use Cory as our family photographer as we continue to grow our little family!

Tiffany has done our family photographs for years. Her work never disappoints! The pictures are crisp, vibrant, and truly capture the beauty of the moment. I love how the pictures are not posed, but more realistic and lively! I would recommend her for any photography endeavor!

We had Ken take family photos of us at a local park in early fall. Our two kids, who don't typically enjoy having to stay still for any amount of time, were very cooperative. I believe this was due to the laid back nature and flexibility shown by Ken, along with his fun and youthful personality. In fact, some of the shots that we enjoy the most we those that were simply capturing moments between set poses. We were very happy with the entire session because of Ken's ability to easily adapt to changes in mood, setting, and get our family in some very nice photo poses. We will definitely be using him again the next time we get our pictures taken for family, individual, maternity, or newborn...and any other occasion that we want high quality professional photos!

One of the best photographers I know! Never disappointed with his work. Brian has taken pictures of many of my friend's special moments (weddings, senior pictures, etc) and every shot really does capture the moment with all it's glory. His pictures are like a portal back to that day, so you can remember it for the rest of your life. If you are looking for a professional, personable, reliable and decent priced photographer, look no further. I would highly recommend Brian Bonner to anyone looking for a photographer.

Jamie has taken our family photos several times, and has done an outstanding job! I am especially grateful for her display of patience during our recent newborn shoot. She spent hours in our home messing with our uncooperative, fussy little boy. Thank you Jamie!

Wade is the best! We recently had our family photos taken, and was able to capture the most beautiful pictures of our very non-cooperative 3 year old. He made the kids laugh and us parents feel as ease. The pictures were incredible and are displayed all over our home!

Sally Wolf is not only an amazing person, but a professional that takes pride in her work. She took great photos of my family and my wife in her maternity dress. She even took suggestions on poses to use from our seven year old, which turned out to be phenomenal ideals. She was very punctual, responsive, and is worth every penny. We will definitely use her again for our infant pictures and hope to retain her as our family photographer for years to come. Thanks Sally and we cannot wait to see the pictures!

Joni did my daughters JROTC pictures. She was able to work with my BUSY schedule and show up on time with very little notice. She was courteous, professional, and her prices CANNOT be beat. I would gladly recommend her to a friend, and will certainly choose her the next time I need a photographer!

We had Tzirel Rutstein photograph our first grandson's 1st birthday and we're so happy she did - she has a great artistic eye for composition and lighting and shot both indoor and outdoor shots. Her picture delivery of cropped and photo- edited pictures were quick and just what we were looking for. For his second birthday, we tried to do it ourselves and have no great pictures; we're sorry Tzirel wasn't in town for the party.

Dana did an amazing job on our first family photos! There's so many good ones, I don't know which ones to choose to hang. He also got the pictures back to us on the day he said he would. He gave us a few sneak peaks to excite us during the wait! I would recommend his artistic work to anyone!! Love our photos ♥️

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

    • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
    • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
    • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
    • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
    • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
    • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
    • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
    • Opt for tonally similar colors.
    • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

    • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
    • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
    • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
    • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
