Carlos scheduled my appointment quickly, stuck to the quote he gave me, and *most importantly* got my highly kid-and-pet-dirtied carpets clean in just a few hours. We would definitely hire him again.

Wow, where do I start- 1st job -I found RJ on thumbtack and his bid was the best for TV mounting a flat screen- scale of 1-5; he got a 5. 2nd job- ceiling fan and chandelier installed, 5. 3rd job- picture hung 20 ft from floor to wall-perfectly hung,he got a 5. 4th job-pending to replace my entire kitchen floor with ceramic tile. Before I have any work done, I call RJ first to see if he can do the job, so far, my hubby and I are very pleased with his work and those of his associates-who by the way was recommended by RJ to replaced all the carpet upstairs- that was a great job. Again, outstanding service, friendly, professional and fairly priced on all fronts. BJ & Randy Terry

Edwin and his helper did and excellent job re-stretching my carpet. The carpet is several years old and had started getting ripples at the entrance to the room. They removed all furniture and stretched the entire carpet not just the area where it was happening. They vacuumed room and cleaned up before replacing furniture. I would highly recommend Edwin at Fenix Floor Coverings. He shows up on time and charged a reasonable rate for his services. B.Hoffman Towson, MD

I hired FloorTechs to install carpet in my townhome. They removed existing carpet/padding and installed new carpet/padding. The crew did a great job on the install, worked quickly and the pricing was very reasonable. I would definitely hire again. My only criticism is that I was told the crew would arrive between 8-9 and they arrived closer to 10. Not a huge problem for me but would have liked a heads up on the change in time. Still, I would highly recommend them.

Jose was easy to contact and knows the business. He showed up early for the jobs, had all the necessary tools/equipment, and was eager to do the job. I could immediately tell he was very adept at his job, and no doubt after he told me he had over 20 years of experience in carpet installation. My job required re-stretching the carpet for the entire upper level of the house(4 bedrooms), and installing the living room with new carpet. The re-stretching task required moving furniture to get the job done. Jose utilized a power stretcher and then had to re-kick/cut the excess. This took less than 3 hours, I was totally amazed. He was very polite, in my eyes his work was much better, and his price was way better than a friend of mine who had the same thing done. I had been putting this off for 5 years, with ugly bunched up carpets in all the bedrooms. I am so glad I had it done, more than reasonable price, and the house looks great again!! Instead of getting new carpet upstairs, all I need to do is rent a carpet cleaner from the local grocery store. Over my lifetime time I have had several carpet installations done. This required me going to a major retail store or so called specialty-flooring store, going over samples, having them write up work orders and then charge me some canned/bottled price according to some chart, then having to decide if I can afford it. Then the dilemma of taking off work for the entire day because they carpet installation company gives you a time window, and even then they did not show up on time. And the price Jose gave was way cheaper than all my previous experiences. I usually do not take the time to write up much about a review for work done, because like everyone else in the world, I am very busy. But obviously I did here. Yes, I would hire Jose again, and again, and again. I would also highly recommend him to anyone. He gets the job done.!!! And on time.

I give Jose Gonzalez and his team top marks. The paint job they did on the interior of my home (three stories, 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths) and exterior front entrance was outstanding and exceeded my expectations. Replacement of the front storm door and locks on two exterior doors was also excellent, as was staining of my deck, repair to a piece of siding, complete interior house cleaning, and shampooing of all carpets. Their attention to detail was phenomenal. Not only was the paint job fantastic, but they took great care in ensuring there was no errant paint on floors/carpet, etc. Jose took great pains to ensure all work was perfect. When he was not satisfied about an aspect of the job, he had it redone until it met his demanding standards and I was completely satisfied. In order to compete the job within the allotted time, Jose and his crew worked long hours. Thanks to Jose and his team, my house never looked so good and I am confident that it will be sold quickly at a premium price. Jose and Brandon have my highest recommendation for any home repair/painting project; if Jose says they can do it, be assured that it will be done to the highest standards and completed on time.

Matt pulled out the carpet in our basement and installed a wood grain tile. He did a great job with the installation and also communicating about the time frame for completing the job. He made see that the grout lines were as narrow as possible to achieve the full wood like unlike some contractors who take the lazy approach. We plan on hiring him again when we upgrade the tile in our bathroom.

The installers were excellent. We were pushed for time because we were moving in and having new appliances delivered. They came out on a Sunday morning to remove the carpet saving time on Monday for installation. What I didn’t like was the sales person requesting a check in lieu of allowing us to use a credit card. Both times he ran straight to the bank and cashed the checks for both the deposit and balance.

The carpets looked brand new. They called to discuss the additional price for spot removal (in addition to steam clean) -- glad I agreed. Well worth it.

Jose and his team did an amazing job replacing all of my carpets today. It came out much better than expected. They used high quality padding and the carpet was just what I wanted. They worked hard and efficiently the entire time. They cleaned up and hauled the gross, old carpet away, swept and vacuumed everything clean. They were professional and very polite. I will definitely be using them again for my basement floors. All of this and a very reasonable price. I’m so glad I called them after an in-Home estimate with a high pressure salesman from Empire.

Hugo and his team refinished 765 square feet of white oak floors that had carpet epoxy and termite damage. When they were done (two day job) you could not tell which boards had been damaged and replaced. In addition, the stain was beautiful. They did great work and I would highly recommend him and his team. On a side note, the polyurethane was unbearable and even seeped into our fridge, our cabinets, and on clean dishes, so be mindful of your food and make sleeping arrangements for a few days and air out your house.

Russ was great and very accommodating. His guys showed up and worked hard. Our floor and stairs turned out so beautiful. I mean, really beautiful! The only thing I can complain about is that there were several spots on the baseboards and the carpet leading to the basement were stain was left by an accidental hit with the brush, drips, or finger prints. We purchased ultra white paint from Home Depot and my husband went around and touched up all the areas, and about 20 minutes later everything looked crisp, clean and brand new. We still have to address the carpet, but I think it will be an easy fix.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.
