My home needed the entire first floor ceiling replaced, every room and hall painted, railing and banisters painted, numerous drywall repairs, and recessed lighting installed. Nilto and his crew did exceptional work on every issue and he made sure the finished job met my expectations. He even offered to come by and put the two remaining light fixtures in place for me once I purchased them as a gesture of his appreciation for allowing him to work on such a big project in my home. I would rehire Nilto with no hesitation. No issues whatsoever. Showed up early every morning, even on weekends, and left late. Trustworthy as well.

Needed a handyman to repair several items before I sold my condo, including multiple cracks in drywall and a broken faucet handle. Walter and his team not only repaired everything perfectly, but the price was more than reasonable when compared to other offers I received. Not only that, but I live out of state, and Walter was in constant communication and provided detailed before and after pictures. Very happy with the level of work and service provided.

Finally, the people on site were great. Luis made sure everything was done as specified. I was presented early with an estimate and total time was under two weeks until the work was completed. The work looks great and everybody was customer friendly. Afterwards, we could tell that they want to make sure the clients are happy; schedule was on time and prices competitive for drywall repair.

Sam and his team were a lifesaver by responding quickly to our need to restore a condo in need of repair from water damage. The water damage had displaced a renter and every day passed meant another day with no home for the renter and lost rental income for the owner. Sam and team juggled schedules and worked extended hours to complete the list of projects required to get the condo ship shape. This included drywall repair, woodwork/trim replacement, and extensive painting, as well as light fixture and window blind installations. Sam was accessible the entire time, their workmanship was high quality and their work ethic was strong. I highly recommend this company and plan to use them again in the future!

I hired Kelvin to get a condo ready for tenant move-in. I was on a tight timeline and needed the work done the next day. Kelvin arrived the next afternoon & worked until 10:30 pm. Drywall repair, painting, caulking, garbage disposal replacement. He took ownership of the project, made excellent suggestions, worked straight through & completed the work in a timely & professional manner. He’s my go-to guy now. Thank you Kelvin!

Problem: plaster ceiling collapsed in the living room, damaging staircase. Needed: 1) partial plaster demo and drywall installation of living room ceiling; 2) Replacement of one stair. Estimated project duration: 3 days. Cesar was easy to communicate with through Thumbtack and via phone. We arranged for a visit and quickly agreed on the scope of work, timing and cost. Day 1: Cesar, the owner, showed up with Keo (lead) and Kevin, making introductions and sharing all that needed to take place. After making sure that everything was set and ready to go, Cesar left me in their capable hands. They secured a double plastic barrier for my dining room and stairway leading upstairs, covered my wood floors, closed my vents, opened windows and began working. They worked efficiently and only broke for lunch. At the end of the day the demo and drywall installation were complete. They cleaned up, then Keo and I agreed on a time for the following day. Day 2: Keo showed up as agreed, again prepping with plastic barriers before the work commenced. He applied the final coats for smoothing, completed cornering and primed the ceiling. Once done, Keo began working on my staircase. Keo amazed me here... My house is 75 years old with the original word work, so I didn’t expect an exact match. To my surprise, the wood type and stain was a near perfect match. Keo cut and fit the wood on site, shored up the frame of the stair, then replaced the tread and nosing. He also tightened up the rail and spindles. There was about a half inch difference between the plaster and drywall, which left a small gap, between the ceiling and top of the balustrade. Keo topped off the balustrade with wood and framed it so that the banister is again flush with the ceiling and firmer than before. Finally, Keo cleaned everything including my wood floor. The bonus is that everything was completed in 2 days. I am grateful for their attention to detail, willingness to accommodate my needs and answer all of my questions. You cannot go wrong with Cesar and his team.

Gaston responded and came promptly to scope my modest drywall repair job. He was able to provide a quote tailored to just what I needed, which was not feasible online. No overselling. Mario arrived when agreed to and performed the work efficiently and neatly. His quality put the builder to shame. Gaston came as Mario finished to ensure that all went well.

Put in a request for drywall repair for my closet and Ahmed immediately responded to request and said that he could get the job completed same day. The drywall repair was done very well and they completed job by patching with mud, reattaching drywall with screws, and painting the closet. It took them about 3 hrs and the job was done very well. Definitely happy with the quality of the work by Ahmed and his partner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
