My experience with Elmo Laing was a powerful trigger of personal memory---from light, to set-up, to processing. By all accounts, he is a meticulous craftsman. Through his eyes and indelible images of my party guests, I am still reliving this momentous occasion ---my 60th birthday celebration. In photograph after photograph, Elmo captured every mood and motion of the affair. He documented the dancing, the band, the striking group portraits, the cake, the room decorum, and of course--ME. His photography has played an important role of constructing memory because the stories leap from their stills. His images are stimulants for remembering---happy lives, families and friends, and what & how we celebrate. I hover over these images! That’s what fantastic photographers do….they show the environment, they show what they saw and they work to compose the best for YOU. That is exactly what Elmo Laing produced for me. Oh, wait a minute, did I mentioned that he is patient, polite, and precise with posing & positioning—a good photographer. Thank you, Elmo for your artistry, storytelling and technical ability. He came to my house to do some portrait-type photography. I appreciated that Joe was relaxed and friendly and didn't seem rushed. I got the photos back from him very quickly. He was helpful in suggesting good backgrounds as well. I was very pleased with the end result. I think he'd make a great family photographer also.

Joshua is one of the best photographers I've ever met. From the beginning of my search for a photographer, Joshua's work and professionalism stood out among the others. While I needed headshots, I also wanted something different, something other than the generic canned ones we've all grown accustomed to seeing. I wanted something casual and spontaneous but certainly not a selfie. As soon as I saw Joshua's portfolio, I knew he was the right one for me. This conviction was confirmed even before I met him in person. Joshua was forthright and proactive in laying out the logistics of what to expect in advance of our appointment. The day of the shoot, he arrived ahead of schedule and allowed enough time to talk with me about his style, his work, and listen to what I wanted and expected. Once the camera started rolling, he made me feel comfortable and at ease and gave me step by step directions of where he wanted me, and what he wanted me to do. I didn't feel like I was posing but stood and acted like I normally do. This gives a much more natural, effective, and stand-out photograph, and I am very pleased with the results. Joshua is friendly, personable, highly skilled at his trade, and very conscientious. He's a consummate professional and has very reasonable rates. I highly recommend Joshua and encourage you to take the time to familiarize yourself with his work. Next time you need a photographer, you now know who to call.

Our wedding was on March 15, 2014. We chose Fox & Owl Photography based on the recommendation of a friend and we couldn't be happier with our decision. A few weeks prior to our ceremony we had a meeting over coffee with both Carrie and Allison, where we discussed the type and style of photography we desired. My wife and I had poured over at least two dozen other portfolios, so we already had zeroed in on a style that both of us really liked. We wanted photography that showed off our love and affection for one another without being too saccharine. We also wanted some shots that highlighted our venue which was right on the Chesapeake watershed. We also listed out the individual moments over the course of the ceremony that we wanted captured on film. During this meeting they took extensive notes, and together we created a layout of the ceremony site and came up with a strategy for how to give the photographers the best sight-lines and ease of movement during the event. We also came up with contingencies for weather. We took a huge risk having an outdoor ceremony in the middle of March. Carrie and Allison exuded confidence and assured us rain or shine (or snow!) that they'd be able to work with whatever conditions were on the ground and still capture our wedding. On the day of the ceremony this planning proved very helpful. Thankfully it was a sunny day in the 60's! Another choice we made was to have the ceremony device-free. This allowed the photographers to do their jobs without distraction or interference. It also provided a serene atmosphere for our guests during the ceremony. We wanted very bold photography, outdoors in sunlight on the waterfront--shots that utilized light and shadow. During our initial meeting I used words like "brooding" and "melodramatic" to describe what I wanted. Fox & Owl came through in a big way. They produced photography that gave that sense exactly, while still keeping it romantic. There were plenty of photos that captured our joy and laughter as well--my wife's bridal portraits were stunning and her "getting ready" photos seem to be by consensus among our friends, the best sets. Carrie and Allison were cordial and professional throughout the day. Their style appeared to be to discreetly capture moments as they happened rather than to be vocal about staging people, Still, some of the best shots they took were when they directed us and asked us to pose in a particular way. Their instincts were dead on especially as the sun was going down. The sunset shots were spectacular and their use of that lighting was ideal. They adapted well to changes. There was plenty that went wrong during the day. Key friends and my own parents were so late they missed their photography times. Knowing that having these pictures were very important, we were able to make time after the ceremony and we got some family photos. In total, Fox & Owl delivered 377 high quality digital photographs on DVD soon after the ceremony. We couldn't wait to have our pictures and they replied to our update request promptly and kept their promised delivery date, which was faster than we were expecting. We narrowed down the best ones for printing and we decided we liked 99 of them. Of those 99, to break it down, I'd say 10 were exceptional, about 50 were excellent and the remaining 40 were very good. We honestly did not expect to have that many great photographs from the day. We spent over a week arguing over what photos should go in which frames and albums. It was a very good problem to have. We would happily recommend Fox & Owl to any couple that desires artistic, high quality wedding photography.

As his makeup artist, I can honestly say that Paul Lara is one of the best photographers I have EVER worked with. He is a fantastic creative talent, with never ending ideas and has so much knowledge and experience that all of the technical aspects that are needed to "get the shot" are like second nature. He also has an amazing ability to put his clients and those working with him at ease. I would recommend Paul's services any day of the week and twice on Sundays!!!! Hes awesome!

I found Doug on Thumbtack and was pleased to have him photograph my wedding this past October. First, I was so pleased to meet him before hand and see more of his work so I knew what to expect. But more than that, I realized that Doug is an exciting, interesting, and cheerful person which made the experience even better. He has an artistic eye and really made some beautiful memories that made me excited to have him shoot my big day! During the day, Doug captured fantastic moments and was flexible when we wanted him to get a specific person or time. He was over all energetic and cheerful! I had a few friends that are amateur photographers also take pictures for us and Doug took the time to answer some of their photography questions and giving them tips - going above and beyond his call... Finally, my pictures came out beautiful and in a timely manner. I can't thank him enough for capturing our day and producing this precious keepsake!

I researched photographers in the Atlanta area and decided to use Jenny Wright Photography for a birthday photo shoot, in which my husband and I enjoyed working with Jenny. She was very professional and receptive to any ideas I had in terms of location and potential shots. I even suggested an imaging technique that many photographers use to isolate a pop of color and she researched how to do the technique and sent me a separate cd within days of me emailing her. Now that is customer service at its best! I wish Jenny best of luck in her future endeavors, especially as she is getting ready to embark on getting more into wedding photography. I would recommend brides in the area to try jenny if you are looking for reasonable prices and someone who is easy to work with.

I hired Leslie to do a photo shoot of a company meeting I was hosting in Washington DC. Leslie was great. She was very easy to communicate with in advance - I was coming to an event from out of town and she made it really easy to work with her. She captured great moments and photos turn out really well. She also does a same day delivery of key shots and then had 100s of the event photos edited and ready for me within a week! I recommend Leslie for event photography and will use her if my company is in DC area again.

Zach Miller was hired as an event photographer for a recent performance where I performed with my jazz band at the Kennedy Center as part of the DC Jazz Festival. The job was one hour. Had spoke to Zach several days before the event due to the restrictions on Photography at the Kennedy Center. Zach was on time and very professional. When I received the finish photos the quality of his work was good. Though Zach was limited on where he could shoot from, the only thing I would have improved would have been the number of close up shots. He shot a range of great long (wide) shots of the band but I would have preferred an equal number of shots at a closer range with a zoom lens where he could have captured more of the emotion of the faces of me and the band members during the performance.

Justin and I started a conversation a little over a week ago. I was looking for a photographer who would be able to take us some couples photos for the holiday season. From the very start, Justin was punctual and he continued to be punctual through to the delivery of the photos. Often times when people hire photographers, people complain that photographers lose momentum once they’ve been offered the gig or once they’ve received payment. This is absolutely not the case with Justin. Justin’s punctuality definitely has been a plus point all the way. I also appreciated that Justin works with clients across varying price points. In addition, I must say Justin’s offer was definitely reasonable given that we’re situated in the DMV. Interacting with Justin, one of the first things I let him know was that I just wanted a quick photo shoot that would be a leg up from our usual selfies. Justin understood exactly what I was expecting out of our photo shoot. Justin and I worked out the details over text, and the photo shoot was quick and effortless. Though I didn’t end up calling him myself, I did pass on Justin’s phone number to a few colleagues of mine - he had such a great offer that I had to share with others! On that note, if you need to hop on the phone to talk details, just ask for his phone number. I am absolutely all about Pinterest and all things Pinterest related. I had ideas of poses but when we met up, my mind sort of went blank (I blame the cold!) and Justin had great ideas which resulted in some beautiful photos of the two of us. I also have to praise Justin’s understanding of space, lighting, and photography concept. Justin took a handful of posed and candid photos, which we both appreciated. Not only is Justin talented, but he is easygoing too. And that’s definitely a plus point when hiring a photographer. If you can’t be yourself around your photographer or if the photographer can’t get you to feel relaxed and at east, then you might as well throw in the towel because you won’t get quality photos. Thank you, Justin, we love love love our photos!! PS: Hire Justin. If my photos are any testament, I’m sure you too will be more than satisfied with yours!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
